Rosetta is beside herself! What a brainiac Our Sunny is! We are in LOVE!

Hannah, why don't you consider target training him? It's so useful, especially if you need to get him to or away from something quickly in case of emergency. Also, you could start teaching him recall (if he doesn't do it already). Considering his outdoor lifestyle, it could be useful to have him come immediately to his name if, say, a Wedge-tailed Eagle were flying over.

Teaching birds to do things is so much fun and so rewarding because they truly enjoy it. Just like teaching a horse to jump, really. Sunny is clearly hanging on your every word, so I think we all know he's going to be a quick study no matter what you choose to teach him.

PS. If you look on ebay, you can get various toys from Chinese sellers, eg. jigsaw shapes to put into holes (square, circle, triangle, etc), a stacking pole with rings, a basketball hoop and ball etc). Just sayin'... ;)

Thank you Bertrisher! So proud of him :D

He does recall quite good already, He knows his name and usually answers back if heā€™s near by then a few seconds later flys to me.
Heā€™s ā€˜step upā€™ is perfect too, only because he loves being with me lol.

Oh yes great idea!!! Iā€™m soo going to buy some training toys! That will be great fun, I could also make some:)

Shhhhh we pretend weā€™re outside.. canā€™t you see the grass and trees?!

.. Okay okay.. itā€™s so hard to stop him coming in! He actually runs to get through the front door before I slide it closed! Iā€™m going to accidentally squash him one day

And he flies at the windows going up and down, peering in! Some would say thatā€™s creepy!!
(Heā€™s softly bumped into the windows in the early days, so donā€™t worry he doesnā€™t try and fly into them. I know itā€™s risky..but what can I do?! Heā€™s a weirdo )

I know this all screams LET HIM BE DOMESTIC. And he does love being inside (with me) but he also LOVES flying free and spending most of his day eating the fresh buds on the pine trees. Digging up fresh shoots in the paddocks, Some nights if Iā€™m not home he flies off to sleep with the wilds. Heā€™s had so much freedom heā€™d be bored stiff if he was in a cage while I was at work a few days a week.

Well itā€™s still up to him anyway! He has until we move out to decide (probably not for at lest. A year)

And I know Iā€™m not helping.. I shouldnā€™t encourage him inside and be teaching him tricks LOL. Oh gosh, I love him. Heā€™s so special. A part of me of course wants him to be with me forever, domestic.. But I do worry mostly about long trips back to the U.K. etc. ( and the fact I still havenā€™t got permanent residency in Australia which is super stressful as only have 2 months left on my 2nd year working visa.. we are waiting on our sponsors to get things in motion )
Letā€™s not worry for now though, let just enjoy the now :14: or Iā€™ll start crying HAHA.

Also a quick question, maybe Bertrisher or Scott can help? Sunny weighs about 530g. My estimate is he is now a year old. Does his weight sound about right for a long-billed Young Corella?

:white1:

Rosetta weights 501gms, so I reckon Sunny is right on track.

Hannah, if it ever came to it, you could always bring or send Sunny over to the east coast and I'd care for him until you got back. :)

Love those pics, his flock mates must wonder why he's so obsessed with those human nests!!

Just to confirm Sunny is a long-billed corella? Weight at around 1 year sounds good.

Wikipedia suggests average 567g: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-billed_corella
World Parrot Trust, 485~650g: https://www.parrots.org/encyclopedia/slender-billed-corella (they suggest long or slender bill)
Beauty of Birds, 640g: https://www.beautyofbirds.com/longbilledcorella.html

Oops Iā€™ve been silly, I wrote that when I wasnā€™t home and thought that his weight was 520g when I weighed him yesterday, not sure where I got those numbers from? His actual weight is 453g. So quite a bit lower but with his young age it seems about right according to Scottā€™s links (Thank you!). And Rosettaā€™s weight being just a little more.

Thank you Bertrisher, great to know if he did have to become domestic he could holiday with you when Iā€™m away :)

Love the hand contact prior to his taking the treat!

What a great companionship you two have.
Once they understand what 'glass is' they rarely hit it with any force.

Perhaps his 453g weight reflects relatively young age? Not sure when they fully mature.

In any case, is his breastbone reasonably cushioned by skin/muscle/fat or rather sharp to the touch?

I tease you about letting him come in, and I think we ALL want you to make him officially yours, but I also respect and admire you letting him choose-even on a daily basis-what kind of bird he wants to be. This is truly a beautiful and amazing relationship.

Hello!

Spring is on its way and the Corellas are back in massive flocks, swarming over the property everyday. They are all finding their mates, pairing up and having lots of fun.
I shed a tear in my eye this morning, laying in Bed I hear all the Corellas fly over. A few moments later I hear Sunnys little voice, I go out to feed and say good morning to him. Left him happily munching away at his seed. After 10 minutes I hear him take off, squawking away as he goes. I rushed to the kitchen window and watched him fly off, over to where a large flock was digging on the hill side. He landed and happily joined in with them.
He did the same yesterday morning too, and he hasnā€™t slept in the barn the past few days. My boy is ā€˜flying the nestā€™ Heā€™s growing up, having sleepovers, meeting friends and going on dates. I couldnā€™t help but get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eyes this morning as I watched him soaring happily in the blue sky. :white1:

Gorgeous pics, bittersweet turn of events. I so admire your dedication to preserving his right to choose. Time will tell, this could go either way!

The pride and pain of being a wonderful Parent! They all grow-up!

That said, do not be surprised if Sunny shows up with the family. :D
Assure you keep up the morning offering, that reward is very likely!

Just wanted to add a link to Sunnyā€™s first ever thread:

http://www.parrotforums.com/new-mem...alia-sunny-my-rescue-long-billed-corella.html

So I can have it all in one place and also for others who are new to our story.
I couldnā€™t see an option to edit it into my first post on this thread which would have been better.. Any admins that could help do that please?

And it wouldnā€™t be fair for me to make a new post without any new photos!
