What I really need to do is re-shoot him doing a training session. On a good nite, I cant keep the rewards coming fast enough. Heck, he even put his harness on last night, no backing away, just stuck his head through the head loop, like we might have practiced it hundreds of times before ( we have, for those who have been following this thread know), he scoots back and forth through the tunnel like its a race, helps clean up the props after each trick and now he runs from the bottom of the slide to the ladder and up almost as fast as I can pick a treat up and put it at the bottom of the slide. Salty makes me and Geri so proud, cuz he is such a good parrot and is so smart; we really got lucky. So yeah, Gail, new videos will be forthcoming, he deserves it

I'm definitely looking forward to that video, Al! Salty really is an amazingly gifted bird.

Absolutely gifted. Even with all the amazing training, etc. The basics have to be in the bird. Salty would be in the top-story college-prep advanced curriculum track. Unlike certain other birds who would be in the basement remedial disciplinary program.
I'm a fan, Salty boy.

Rival ! Where you been ? The RB got you slaving away , with no time to post to your friends and co-conspiritors? You got to get that bird serviced, all that talk about the Henz is stirring up the pot for the nice , well behaved parrots on here.

Wrench, Salty is AMAZING and I love hearing the way you talk to him in your videos. Is there a specific training model you follow? And will you share it so I can train Future Bird to be as grand as Salty?

We started with turning in circles. Holding the treat close to his beak he followed it around , while I gave him the "Circles" command. 2 or 3 circles and I gave him the treat. After a few nights of doing that he got the idea. Next was rolling over, that took awhile. I manually had to turn hime over , while giving him the Rollover command. That one took a week or two until he got the idea. You have to understand, we train every night, every night. And consistency in giving the commands, or hand signals, that so important. Save your parrots favorite treat for training, thats key too. Salty would shingle my roof for his favorite treat. If you like watching him, check out the next post, it;s a re-shoot of a lot of his newest tricks.

As requested, this is a video of Salty doing most of his newest tricks and some older favorites. It's a long-ish video, 9 min , but worth it , I think. Enjoy guy.

Wow simply amazing Al! Like Mr Rival said...it has to be in the birdie too..obviously Salty has it in him lol.
I love the coin in the choo choo thing lol...and the cups, then beaking them back to you.

When Amy was young, she picked up the "roll over" thing pretty easily..I just had to point and twirl my finger and she would do the 360..

Great job you guys are doing with him and it shows he really enjoys his "training time" with you..now I bet he just thinks of it as playtime with daddy lol :D

Wow! Salty is so smart and cute.

Much like BIRDIGIRL keeps a running thread on Mr. Biggles,

who I am his biggest fan, I am going to so the same for Salty,

so I don't clog up the board with endless posts.

Right now he is in the bedroom with Geri and I chewing up today's bills. GOOD BOY! Before, he enjoyed his Friday night pizza crust and his favorite .. a chicken bone. He loves marrow.

I'm sure you've heard of the cussing cockatoo, have you?? If not you seem like the type who'd get a kick out of it, it's on YouTube

How do I teach HIM to do what? A specific trick , or all of them collectively?
Honestly, once Salt learned 5 or 6 tricks, it became easier and easier to get him to do new ones. He understood that we would be starting a new trick, I would show him what I wanted, he would try doing it, I would correct if ( if needed) and soon he had it right. As the tricks became more difficult or required a bit more thinking, Salty rose to the challenge. He is at the point now where new tricks take him one or two tries and he usually gets them.

It is the working with him every night without fail that I think helps the most. We both look forward to our after dinner training sessions, always at the same time +/- 15 min.

Here is a pic of Salty getting ready to fix my Harley Davidson motorcycle. You know , it ran better after he fixed it then after the dealer worked on it.

I just meant training in general, I've tried to teach Lily simple things like "fetch" and she just stares at me like I'm an idiot lol then crawls on my lap to cuddle

If you could post a video of you training him that would be awesome because I have no idea how to train my 'too. She's in her 40s but apparently no one taught her any tricks and I want her to be more active instead of just wanting to cuddle

Al, that was incredible! You're right, very much worth it! Watching you and Salty together just proves an old truth of working with parrots... you get out of it what you put in. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you guys, but Salty does all the work. I will make sure to give him a big kiss from all of you. As I;ve said before , the only reason I video these sessions is to show people how close you can become with your parrot and what is possible. I know I love working with Salty, it's the high point of my day, and I know he looks so forward to the sessions too, and not just for the treats. He reminds me if it's past training time!

Emyoung, I am going to PM you, with some suggestions.
