Right now Salty is.....

Oh, his joy is unmistakable! Loved watching that!

Cute video. I have one of those mats and Nike won't even go near her pearch if that's in sight.

I love that video! It is so wonderful to see Salty completely lost in play, and on his back to boot! Definitely a winning combination!

Spring must be close, because Salty has been putting his harness on in one try during our training sessions. Usually I have to cajole him afew times, but for the last week, he pops his head right thru the head stall as soon as I present the trick. Spring cant be far now!

Salty had Geri and I in stitches this afternoon. He had been very quiet all morning, just hanging out on his boing, when he climbed up and over and down to go into his cage. He then proceeded to methodically throw every last foot toy out of his cage onto the floor. Starting with the largest of his nesting cups and then working his way down to smaller and smaller toys - all of them, one by one, with a quick head cocked look after each to see that it did in fact fall . Well the 2 of us start cracking up because he's never done anthing like this before. I know some folks have parrots who do this all the time, and I can imagine it gets old pretty quick, having to retreive toys constantly, but this was the first time he'd done anything like this. If we had a camera or phone handy I would have recorded him, but I didn't want to break his consentration. Salty never fails to make us laugh and we are so grateful for having him our lives.

well...just look at who he lives with ..no wonder he's an exceptional parrot :D

Well I been remiss in keeping up Salty's journal, partly beacuse its spring rehearsal time ( getting ready for pirating season) and going to Hong Kong & China for work. I just got back today. So wierd - geting on the plane at 9:30 AM and arrving back in NYC at 1:30 in the afternoon of the same day. Amazingly, Salty has been doing almost all his trick training with Geri, including the more difficult ones. She even got him to do a new trick, where she plays the xylophone, and Salty sings with it. I ran thru his entire repetoir tonight, and I;ll be darned if he didn't do it for me, too. It's very cute, I need to video that. Salty was a bit stand-offish at first , even though I gave him my usual pre-trip talk. But making up by giivng him little pieces of walnut goes a long way in mending fences. He kept hiding his head and saying "Peek a Boo' all through dinner, which was pretty funny. Its supposed to be warmer for the next couple days, so I will harness him up and do some toy and parrot food shopping. Oh BTW, the guys on the Bird Street in H.K. remembered the videos I showed them last year of Salty, and wanted to see the latest ones. And I even found a DYH that actually did not chew my hand up- such a nice parrot. Usually DYH make mince meat of my hands.
Hope every ones Spring is starting nicely, with not too much hormones popping up.

You must be dealing with some serious jet lag, I bet!

Looking forward to the video of Salty's latest trick! And it's great Salty has gotten to the point of working so well with Geri on his repertoire of tricks. She must be over the moon!

I wondered if you were off to China again. I envy you your frequent trips! I did a 3 week tour there 10 years ago and fell in love with the country. Glad you’re back and way to go Geri, teaching a new trick!!

As predicted, todays weather was not bad 55+, so Salty put his harness on, like a champ, and we hit 3 stores: a pet chain, and 2 supermarkets. He was so well behaved, and in fact on the way home, Salty was grinding his beak ( a sign of a contented parrot) and even relased the wonderfull smelling X-Mas cookie smell. He's been asking for scratchies all day, and has benn having a ball with one of his new toys. It cracks the staff at the pet chain, to watch how Salty picks out a new toy. I hold it up to him and if he likes it, he starts to nibble on it; if not he ignores it. The supermarkets did'nt even raise a fuss about him being on my shoulder ( I would have told them he is my seeing eye parrot ). A fun day out side for sure.

LOL a pirate with an eye patch is a misnomer, as is the hook and peg leg. All 3 would disqualify anyone from being an able seaman, which is the very first requirement for being taken for pirate. What captain in his right mind would want a crew member who cant climb rigging, do rope work or has no depth perceptionn( used when firing cannon, spotting sails etc). No, a crew member who was disfigured would be put ashore, with rightful share of existing booty. Often Articles are signed before going aboard, agreeing to so much for a hand, so much for a leg, etc. In those cases it was a lot less then an equal share.

I see I have been remiss in posting to Salty;s thread, so here goes. Last nite he was in a mood. Didn't eat much, was not interested in playing and he gave me a nip ( timed out on a chair back). Even his Trick Training time was lack luster, and he refused quite a few tricks. Yes, even for pine nuts. When we train he always has the option of refusing a trick, I never force him to do any of them. Oh yeah, and Geri said she had never heard him as loud as yesterday, she unplugged her hearing aides! And if he was acting the same tonight, I woulda called Dr Hoefer. But tonight he was singing, talking up a storm, and got a 20 min scratchy session. We played and roughhoused, with him on his back for at least that long if not longer too. My guess is that he was just in a mood, He was making me laugh so much, as he has this hop, skip and jump when he runs along the back of our big couch and he is in a good mood. So mood swings is what I attribute it to. Are they a sign of impending hormones? Salty will be 3 in June, and he has not really given any of the hot 3 kind of sexual moves. Just a mood swings, which has happened before. Does he need Pamperin??

And just because I think it's funny, I am reposting his video entry for April POTM - a classic Salty laugh and him singing along with the xylophone ( part of a new trick he invented himself !! )..

Mythbusters did a show on that....the theory being that the eye patch protected dark vision for fighting. They pretended to board a victim, going into the dark hold to fight, with and without the eye patch. With no eye patch, going from sunlight into dark created near blindness for a while. Wearing an eye patch and flipping it up upon going into a darker space left the “pirate” with much better vision for fighting and plundering.

Well, maybe, but no depth perception in one eye. No, for plundering give me the 2 eyed, 2 armed, 2 legged pirates.

Man I love a good training session with Salty. He literally runs and hops from trick to trick. He even runs to the edge of the table and looks down to see what tricks are left. Put his harness on first try! Did every one with such joy? Gusto? Eagerness? Dunno but it was fun for both of us! G'nite all.
