Right now Salty is.....

Right now Salty is enjoying his lunch of kiwi, black berries and apple. He cracked us up last night. His usual set of nesting cups ( the ones in the videos ) is a six piece set, and he's been working with those for months. I found a new set that has 8 nesting cups, and tried them on him last night. No difference until he got to cup #7 , and he stopped dead, holding it in his beak, and looked at us, like "Don't you think I can count? What are you trying to pull over on me??". An additional pine nut piece spurred him on to finish all eight. And then he cheated, grabbing 2 at a time to put them back into my hand. Don't tell me parrots aren't smart !!

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww...
I'd definitely make sure Salty doesn't get a chance to see your password for any foods/toys website...

Right now Salty is sleeping ( it's 9 AM and he does not get up until 10), but yesterday was kinda special. For the first time he said to my wife "I love you" , which was special in of itself, but he also greeted me at the door with "Hiii Daddy", both new vocalizations for him, so a special day indeed. And last nite, during our training session, he hadde another break through. We hace this nechanical bank, where when the coin is dropped into a specific spot, a cute little choochoo train goes around a track, to music and deposits the coin. He has been a little leary of i but last night he did the trick all by himself. Well he got his treat and tons of verbal praise from the whole family. So much so that he wanted to do the trick again. Might even become one of his favorites ( he has those, you know). It being Saturday I get to spend the whole day with him, as i putter around the house and its shower day for him, something he is learning to appreciate. Have a geat day with your fids everyone

Al..that is SOOOO cool!.. gonna have to pay you guys a visit sometime and see your boy in action lol.
Obviously he has re cooperated from his mishap..we were all very nervous and rooting for the guy!

Say "HI" to everyone for us...and a special "HI" to Salty, from his cousin Amy lol.

I will do so right away Jim. He has also been singing a lot more. We has The Blues Brother on the other day, and Salty was doing the audience part when Cab Caloway was singing Minnie the Moocher. You know, the HiDeHiDeHiDeHi part, with Salty answering back Squacky Squacky Squack. Had us all in stitches.

And a hidie-hidie-hidie-ho back at ya from me and Rb.

We WERE worried... glad that's behind us.

Oh yeah Salty is back to his usual self. Singing , talking , chewing , eating nibbling.... the whole nine yards. Funny, today he and I watched about an hour of silly parrot videos on Youtube, and he didn't move an inch ( unusual for him). He just stared at the birdies on the screen. Gotta keep the number of those vids with the yellow napes crying like babies down though - I had a YNA that did that ( my daughter's cry)), drove my ex up the wall because she could never tell the difference, and she'd come running only to find out it was Winston. That was part of the reason I had to re-home him. 31 years later, I wish I'd kept the bird, because the ex is, well, the ex.

Salty was singing on my shoulder to nite during rehearsal, while I was signing and playing concertina. Look at my avatar and picture a singing parrot on my shoulder. Gotta practice for the spring season. He has a lovely voice .

You are already the best pirate band, but dannnng, Salty is gonna put you boys COMPLETELY over the top!

We have identified Salty's favorite chew toy. Its a cheap(er) one from Pet Smart, a wood toy with 2 disks, 4 wood columns connecting it, a central chain and a bell on the bottom. Sunday I got him a new one ( his 3rd). The little buzz saw went through that toy in a matter of hours this time! Reduced it to splinters right before our eyes, it was pretty amazing and a good demonstration of how much parrots enjoy chewing wood. I am thinking of ordering 3 or 4 more from them online, he loves that toy so much. Salty has also developed a love for chewing up used paper towel tubes, which is great as those are FREE! For those who like to watch Salty do his tricks, here is a link to the newest thread on that topic:

Stop thief!! I was just going thru my vast collection of sterling silver pirate related ring, pins and pendants ( and it IS vast - I have a major silver addiction) to make a donation for the up coming Pirates Salty Ball, and Salty has shown his true colors by sneaking off with a pin, or ring or pendant to play with it , only to throw it off the side of the bed. While I am recovering that one, he sneaks off with another. WTF, I thought only crows are attracted to shiney metal objects! Darn there he goes again.. as fast as I get up and find the darn things, he grabs another. Well obviously the master bed was the wrong place to do this. Salty stop! Thief! Burglar! Pickpocket! Arrrgghhh, annoying bird knock it off. He only goes for the expensive ones too! Bracelets too, Salty?

OK, time to do this after he goes to bed. Grrrrrr.

Just saw these updates...please I agree, Salty needs to sing Yo ho ho ho a pirate's life is for me...maybe if you give him back his jewels he will learn...

OH, them amazons loves treasure. I used to have a ring watch. It came from the Liberace museum gift shop, so it had a big half fake pearl surrounded by rhinestones that flipped up to reveal the watch face. I moved in with friend, who thought it would be fun to show Oliver my jewelry case. Don't let him near that, I says. Oh, he's not going to hurt anything, he says. Oliver reaches down for the most fascinating thing in the drawer. Don't let him bite that watch, I says. That's a Liberace watch and I be most fond of it. He can't hurt it, he says. Oliver crunches, bits of shattered crystal spray into the drawer and carpet. Luckily one one stone crunched and he didn't injest any of the bits. Look on Jeff's face is almost worth it. Oliver very excited, wants more. MORE! Tried the rest of his life to get back into the treasure, and I didn't dare wear anything in his reach. Salty be cut 'o the same cloth, I figures. You think he likes silver, but wait till he sees jewels.

Funny, the first part of parronting is finding things they loved, and the next is endlessly keeping them away from those things.

No I think it just a parrot thing. My little BeeBee parrot, Max was the same way, terribly jealous of jewelry. One time I had dumped all my silver stuff out on the bed to go thru it and see what needed cleaning.
Max immediately jumped on top of the pile and would not let me or Geri remove a single item. He would run down the pile, and try to bite your hand if you tried to remove even a single ring. And screaming at you the whole time. It had us laughing so hard.

Salty has new tricks. I built a parrot slide and he is working on that. I made the tunnel longer on he peek a boo tricj, 2 ft long now. ANd he helps clean up from that trick. He is learning how to play 3 card monte.
And he has perfected the choochoo train trick . He is home with Geri this weekend, as I am away in Ct, at the Pirates Salty Ball. She is going to attempt some training with him tonight. I felt bad this AM, I woke him up, fed him and then had to say bye bye. Last nite, the 3 of us laid on our bed and watched parrot videos, Salty loves them. Some times he talks to the birds, and if I make believe I am scratching the bird on the screen he gets jealous, giving me a nip in the neck.
