The diary of Mambo

The Rb's weight varies from 245 down to 230, according to time of day and other stuff, and has for 30 years... his average is 233-237. The vet says it's okay. Gee, I'd like to run that by an avian vet near you. Can you Google up an avian vet in your locale?

Feather troubles... I'm not sure that cage issues would be my first thought. Diet? General health? Another reason for a vet... I know... I tend to harp on that!

As for behavior... if I were you, I'd re-visit the Amazon stickies. They're so full of wisdom. Every time I look, I see something new.

My vet told me he’s overweight:/
And his diet is good, he doesn’t have any feather problem. He just stick his back to the wall of the cage and try to somehow escape ..so he breaks his feathers. But he doesn’t have any health issue

Hmmmpft, if this is the same vet that we already decided is behaving like quite the idiot ... I would just ignore him/her.
Weight is not just a number - is the ratio fat-muscle, how sharp/padded is the keel etc.

You can always get a second opion of course. You have a few CAV's around you.

There are plenty of "this is about the weight off...." lists floating around on the internet. Maybe compare a few of those?

I do not know what is going on with the feathers - Mambo is trying to wriggle out of a cage?
How is he doing that?

Yeah I’ll search.. I don’t see him thin and I don’t see him fat so I guess he’s good :/

He hangs upside down, next to a wall, and tries to get out by “shaking” so of course some feathers get out and then they don’t get back to their original position, it’s quite funny hahah

Hi Jose. Great idea to start a trhread just for Mambo, you can see I've done the same for my Amazon, Salty, link is below, and its some 93 pages long now.

So you need to do a few things with Mambe. Go to the Amazon sub forum and read the thread at the top of the page titled " Amazon Body Language" read it several times, out loud, while sitting next to Mambo's cage. Read it ina pleasing tone of voice. This may sound silly, but its very important .

Second, on biting, you are almost doing it correctly, but use a chair back to put him on , nothis cage. His cage is his refuge, and should not be used as a punishment place. WHen he bites, say No Biting in a starn voice, and puthim immediately on a chair back, and turn your back to him for 5minutes.No eye contact, at all. I would not leave the room. Mambe seem smart enough toget it pretty quickly.

Goodluck with Mambo. You might want to start trying to teach him some tricks- Amazons love learning and praise ,so learning a trick for them is fun.To get an idea of what they can learn, check out Salty's videos, link below.

Jose' how old is Mambo now? My Amy is almost 30 years old and she came to live with me when she was about 4 months old. So,according to her CAV,who has been her doctor since day-one,Amy is now considered to be "middle aged" and even middle aged humans get..errrr….ummmmm.."heavier" lol..

Amys "usual" weight was between 485g's to around 505. Her last wellness check showed her to be a massive 548g's!! a TRUE porker!

When Amy came home with me I was still very uninformed and nieve about parrots in general and I don't think this awesome forum was even in existence then :19: Amy never learned to fly (fledge) I always thought that was a no-brainer..all birds know how to fly!
To this day, even with me training her,she will NOT fly. So she has lost muscle mass at her chest, from not flapflapflapping. NOW at her last wellness check she was discovered to have a partially blocked ARTERY!! The artery is way too small to insert at stent, like the docs would do with a human,so now she has to take meds everyday, that enlargen/open up the artery to help blood flow..luckily it is working, she is much more energetic and alert and happy.

Amy now eats ZERO seeds..nada! I make her and BB the Cockatiel birdie muffins with 100% real goodies. On occasion sure she gets a "treat" a piece of pizza crust,or some veggies from a bowl of Chinese food..chicken leg bone (which is actually good for her from the marrow, and an occasion scranbled egg with a piece of cheese melted in..but NO French fries.

Unfortunately, like her DAD,she has now heart problems with medication she must get every day for the rest of her life :(

Yess i think it’s a really good idea!
I knew about biting and all that cause it think that you? told me on another post??

What I’m worried about is his weight.. I don’t know if it is because he’s 5 months old or because he’s a little BFA, or if it’s not normal at all.. but he eats good and everything

Hello!

I wanted to do a little update while mambo is eating so he doesn’t eat my phone or my computer (any tips for stopping that???)

I made him a “toy” I took a shoe lace and I’ve put 2 balls, each in an end of it (sorry for my English I don’t know how to formulate this sentence lol). I then put it in a way that if you pull a ball the other balls go up to the roof..
I’m going to add a picture because you will not get it I think, one second lol.

Well so Mambo, he is eating a plant btw

fe0cbf22bd57edb9350f57838e154b74.jpg

(I’m gonna explain the feather later) well, back to the threat, he loves his toy! He gets angry with the balls of course, but well is always angry... and what he does is that he literally jumps on a ball so he falls almost until the bottom of his cage.. then he goes back up and he repeats the same with the other ball. And he’s doing that the whole day!

That is why he has that weird feather, cause as he’s not careful he almost removed it..

In a way I’m happy because it means that he learnt that one ball will go up and the other down..
so that’s his new toy!

*—————————*

Back to another day.. he starts to be really kind and not biting, so it’s 2 or 3 days that I let him come on my shoulder.
HOWEVER, the other day he was sleeping and all of a sudden he woke up and became crazy (he always does that) and was like scared, and he bit my ear.
I didn’t scream at all!
But he did me a piercing, so I started bleeding and it stills hurting right now.
So yeah, I’m back at not letting him on my shoulder cause he really hurt me the most this time, and I don’t even think he really wanted to bite.. but well, it’s still dangerous..

He starts to preen me, and the other day he nearly regurgitate on my ear.. so I guess it’s a good sign he starts to love me.

He met some more people, and he has been quite good, everyone could handle him (not petting, he doesn’t like) BUT there one thing that he hates.
Fake nails, all the girls who have those long fake nails, he’s scared of them and he will break them if he has the chance.

So yes! I don’t really have anything else to say... I didn’t really do a good job with the structure of this post but actually I’m SO lazy to reread it.. I suppose you will understand it anyway haha.

See you soon!

Jose :)

That is an interesting toy you made - I would not have thought of that.

I like your stories about Mambo :)

(I am scared of long, fake nails as well! So I do not blame Mambo for biting! My parrots wil bite my fingernails when they grow too long, so this may be a parrot-thing?))

I actually bought him the halls but he didn’t like them, so I thought in another way of showing them to him and it worked out [emoji53]

Hi guys!
Today happened something really sad.. In my house they are doing works so I’m in a little studio until they are finished, and from the windows of this studio I can see the roof of a house next to me, I could even walk.

Well so Mambo he always goes next to the windows to look outside because there are always a loooot if pigeons.

Today he was looking and suddenly started shouting, i thought it was because it started to rain, but he wouldn’t stop.
I went to the window and saw that there was a pigeon that somehow got hurt and he was agonising...
I closed mambo in his cage opened the window and jumped to the roof to take him.. he was paralysed so my guess is that he hit a window and fractured or broke his back...
I was running to the car to take him to a vet and while I was driving he passed away.. it made me so sad, and anyway I took him to the vet so they could burn him.
The vet said that he was old, so he could have perfectly got lost when it started raining and hit something.

It was a very sad moment...

After that I said well, if he passed away it’s because it had to be (I always think like this) and I looked at the positive side. Mambo tried to help him, or maybe he just wanted to kill him. But at least he saw that there was a pigeon and he could tell me.

I know this is a bit sad, but I felt the need to tell you all! And ironically today is all saints day lol, I just realised while I was writing this!
Have a nice day.

Jose :)

Helloooo everybody!

Well so today...... I come back with another ANNOYING and funny story.

Has anyone seen this video?
https://youtu.be/fA36KsvYdG8

THAT WAS MY NIGHTMARE! I didn’t want Mambo to do any of this sounds cause it would just make my head explode!

Well so TODAY, he learnt a new sound -__-.

Next to my house there a church... you’re already getting it.... and every 15 min I think, the bells make some noise.

Well so at 15h (3pm) the church makes 5 times “3 times “ding””.
So Mambo I don’t know how, learnt to do this, and he’s been doing it the whole day! Even at bed time, when I covered him, he would be like: “ding ding ding” “ ding ding ding”. For some reason he only does it twice (6 dings) so it’s not as bad as 15 times LOL.

I tried to record him but he hates the phones, computer etc... and he just attacks them.. as soon as I’ll record him I’ll upload a video.

He doesn’t do it at a loud level by the way! So that’s cool! I hope he will never be loud lol

Jose :)

LOL my name/ contactcall in parrot-speak is the space-invader-sound!
Not sure if Japie or Apie started it, but it stuck.

Mambo is really great with sounds- he is only a baby and learning *fast* :D

Hello back!
It’s long time I’m not by here.. there was not much to talk about and I didn’t have much time either :/

Mambo is doing well as always.
He’s biting A LOT less, even when he growls at me and “bites” he does it gentle so it doesn’t hurt.

I’m working with the harness, I don’t really know how, but I’m trying... he hates it and doesn’t even want to see it [emoji30] I hope he will let me put it soon... I’d love to take him outside and show him the trees and all that stuff...

He says hi! Well, he waves and 1 minute later he says “saluuuuuuut” (it’s hi in French)..

What else...??
Each time I brush my teeth (with the electric toothbrush) he SHOUTS, but not just a little, he shouts LOOUD! I don’t know why:/ I guess it’s the noise it makes ?? I saw that he doesn’t like noises and always try to be louder than them [emoji58].

He’s almost potty trained by the way!! Now I’m trying to change his way of telling me, cause for the moment is biting my arm nonstop.

And that’s pretty much everything that has been going on :) he met a parrot, a Senegal parrot.. he was quite aggressive [emoji53]
Any tips on socialising him towards other parrots??? I’m not counting in having others for the moment, but when I will go to visit my parents he will see so many big birds, and I don’t want him to be agressive.

I leave you with some pics so you remember him!

He likes to hang on the towels after the shower [emoji58]

Don't try to rush putting on the harness.
When you have him with you wherever you are sitting keep the harness close so he can see it's not a threat.
Let him bite it (gently, not in two). Touch him with it, maybe drape it across his back.

I have had the aviator harness on my Bingo only 2 times. Putting it on was no trouble, it was taking it off that was difficult. Bingo would get impatient during the removal process and start twisting around biting the harness and my fingers. The longer it took the harder the biting became. I was afraid he would get really tangled up in the thing.

With Pacho I knew right away it would never work. I think it may have reminded her of a snake (something birds are naturally afraid of).
