Teach Your Bird To Talk

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

LOL sorry. Thought he was a she ;). I can only imagine how fun it is to have him around. I crack up everytime I see one of his videos. He not only smart, he is charming ad well ;).

I've heard how they talk, and it sounds so much like their owner. It's simply amazing. My breeder has her AG around little kids everyday, so her AG have learned a lot of bad words etc. One day her neighbour came over, when she knocked at the door, the parrot told her to f*** off LOL. She thought it was my breeder, she was so choked that she went home. Later she called her and my breeder told her it was her parrot :D. Eventhogh the parrot learned the word from a kid, she said it in my breeders voice LOL :D.

LoL that was funny..... birds need to hear a word just once, and they remember it. I have said words to Mishka previously, he sometimes says then weeks later, they have fantastic memories, and NEVER forget.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

My cockatiel (7 months old), Chicken Little is learning to talk. I'm so excited! We are doing well...but I got thinking and I have a question.

How soon after Chicken Little starts saying his new word or phrase should I start focusing on a new one?

Right now he says:

Pretty bird
Him a good boy
Chicken Little
What'cha Doin'
Hello (he's just started)

In fact, when I realized he didn't know how to say "Hello" I started saying to him "Hello, whatcha doin?" and 2 days later he's saying it :D

When I say focusing...I talk to my birds all the time, but when I wanted to teach him.."What'cha Doin?" I'd say it several times over, several times a day incorporating it in my talking. Within 4 days he was saying it, now it's consistent with all his other words.

Also Chicken Little is unique in the fact that when he's interested in learning a word or phrase...as soon as I say it, he shakes his head really fast, almost like if he got a tickle or a bug in his ear...it's soo funny! But I've discovered that within a week he's saying the word/phrase he was shaking his head at.

So I tend to put a heavier focus on words/phases he shakes his head at.

I've been trying to teach him "I love you **Kiss**" and he's not interested, rarely shakes his head and he hasn't even tried to say it. My Conure (3 1/2 months old) on the other hand, when I say 'I love you" he finishes with the **kiss**

Chicken Little is definitely a sponge right now and I want to keep him inspired to keep talking without discouraging him by trying to teach him too much too fast. So far, after he's started saying a new word or phrase, I make sure he's saying it with consistency for a full day or two then I start adding another.

Is that too soon, or if that's working just keep doing it?

Thanks,

Toni

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Oh wow, what a cool technique, I was thinking of trying something similiar with my Amazon. I wonder if there is a way to develop it so it'll play while I'm at work but not the entire time.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Teaching your bird to talk requires talking to the bird daily, it increasing the birds vocabulary.

Repetition is very important, over and over again and again. Make sure the bird understands what the word means, using the same word in different sentences.

Keep it simple and fun, rather like entertaining the bird.

Mishka loves learning, to him it's a game, a game he thoroughly enjoys participating in 24/7

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Mishka is adorable. I love the little accent. I'm going to send kevin to you for a bit so he doesn't pick up the local hillbilly dialect. :18_crazy:

I'm really going to have to try these with kevin. a week with us and he's already proving how smart he is. only 15 weeks old and after a week he;s already making the beginning noises of "hi kevin" and "pretty bird" and picked up some noises from my bf's sun conure. I knew greys were smart but I had no idea...

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Not all greys can talk as good as Mishka. I do all the things you suggest. Rosie is in her own little world when it comes to talking. You can carry on a conversation with your boy. To me it is amazing.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Some birds talk then stop, some birds do not talk at all.
Rosie, spiritbird bird, began to talk and now hardly talks.

How much time are you interacting with the birds, one on one time.
Perhaps make a CD, for them, recording your voice, saying some simple words, you would like them to learn. Playing the CD for them, saying the words. Switching off the CD, keep repeating the words to the birds, making them into sentences. Remember to keep it fun and entertaining.

Mishka and I talk a lot during the day 24/7 at the moment (I am seeking employment again).
At night he sits on my lap, for an hour, beak to nose, I then proceed to teach him new words, saying them to him softly, making short sentences, using the new word.

It was not always this easy, Mishka went through a period, where he totally ignored me for weeks on end, not saying a word. I persevered, and just kept on talking and talking.

Talking and talking and talking, is the best medicine.

Antoinette
I have been blessed with being able to obtain two talkers at once, one is a 20 month old blue quaker and the other is an 8 month old Pineapple greencheek. They are both males, hand fed, hand tame, and very loveable, other than being nippy at times.
The little quaker I have named Bogey, because he talks low and scratchy like Humphrey Bogart. The GC we have name Eli, they both talk but it is very low, you have to have them right up to your ear to hear them.

Bogey suprised me only moments after he arrived informing me "you're troublesome", to which I replied, "Oh, did she tell you that?" and he replied "the worst I've ever seen".

But the problem is they talk very low. How can I get them to talk louder, so other people in the room can hear them. They are not shy about talking around anyone, it's just too low.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Anyone who is a guardian to a bird has been blessed, it a privilege.

I know exactly what you mean when saying they talk in a low low voice.
Mishka often whispers new words, not sure why, but I reckon because he is not sure of the words yet.

Please view the video below;

When Mishka said he misses me, I began replying to him of course I missed you.
He tried saying it, but practically whispering the words OF COURSE.

I then began to emphasize the words OF COURSE, within about 3 days he stopped whispering it and said loud and clean OF COURSE.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Mishka is such a smart little guy and you give him so much love. I am convinced some Greys are better at talking than others no matter how much love and attention they get. Rosie is a prime example. She has a vocabulary of less than words and has said nothing new for a long time now. I repeat things over and over again coupled with the action. I am truly not worried at all about her talking. I will keep on enjoying Mishka.

I am truly fortunate that Mishka enjoys talking all day 24/7.
Some birds will and some birds won't.

Steven actually pointed out to me today, no matter what I am doing, withing the apartment, I am always talking to Mishka......AND BELIEVE ME I CAN TALK AND TALK

Glad you enjoy Mishka, because I am sure he loves entertaining LoL

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Thanks I'll try that. They both are so gorgeous and loving, the talking, I feel is just an added bonus. But if they want to talk, I want to help them learn more.
Thanks again, just trying to get all the information I can.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

Great video! What a awesome thing to see.
When I played it, my birds were right next to me. My cockatiel didn't respond at all ... just continued with preening himself. Keen, my GCC, started making little noises and trying to get a look at the computer. She could totally tell it was a bird talking, not a person. She even let out a couple screams.

You are most welcome.......
When I figure out Mishka loves talking, I just took it one step further.

Re: Training Your Bird To Talk

It is possible that you can teach your parrot to talk. In most cases you have seen that a parrot can spoke some word like natural language. This can be done that you have to teach your parrot of repeating word against him. You can also teach him to more than one language.

I have a orange wing Amazon that I am going to attempt to teach to speak she is supposed to be around 4 years old and had to be rehomed to me she's a sweetheart tho still finicky about being touched but I have hopes to begin to teach her a few words ill try your strategy and keep you posted

Spiritbird you are so correct, some birds will talk and others prefer not to.
All birds have different personalities and characters, each one is so precious, in their own unique way.

When becoming a guardian one should accept the bird the way he is.
Love the bird unconditionally, and you have a friend for life.

If a bird talks, it is a bonus.
Mishka is happy to entertain you

Mishka loves watching video's of other birds talking, but one problem....
The moment they start talking, Mishka takes over completely, talking away as if talking to the other bird AND not giving the bird a chance to say ANYTHING
