Teach Your Bird To Talk

Re: Training your bird to talk

Ruby said, "Whatcha doin'?" yesterday!

I've decided that I want to teach her Jaberwocky. She and I have a good 40 years to work on it. We're starting at the top...

'Twas brillig and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe.....

I think that is so
Jaberwocky if from Start Wars if I am correct?

Re: Training your bird to talk

Nope, it's from Through the Looking Glass. Lewis Carrol wrote it with about 50% nonsense words. I used to know the whole thing, but now I have to look it up.

Beware the Jaberwock, my son
The jaws that bite, the teeth that catch
Beware the jub-jub bird and shun
The Evil Bandersnatch!

I also used to know the Walrus and the Carpetner from start to finish.

That all sounds too complicated for me, you know I have a Bird Brain

MWAH Di

Yipe he was sitting outside today, even thought it was a bit overcast, extremely hot here at the moment.

I love the way his voice changes tone, when he says let's go to the bathroom

Re: Training your bird to talk

I have used these same techniques to teach my AG new words with the same success. My only problem is she only says her words when in the cage or sitting on top wanting attention. I want her to sit on my arm or lap and talk on command but she wont say a word..... maybe in time

Re: Training your bird to talk

Mishka was exactly the same, only talking when no one else was present.

Keep talking, one on one time with your bird. Your bond will become stronger, and in time he will trust you more and open up.

One day at a time, when the bird is ready and willing he will begin to talk in front of people. Make sure you talk constantly, each and every day.

Re: Training your bird to talk

Talking would be a plus, but my main objective is to get my Senegal Tiki to enjoy spending time with me as much as I love spending time with him. It's been 3 weeks to date since I got him and he is now a year old. I spend hours each day with him from morning till night and he seems to really like spending time with me. But only after the first week, which was a little strange for him being in a new house with strange people.

He is starting to talk more and whistle more when we are in the room with him, mainly when we are talking between ourselves and ignoring him. I guess it's his way of getting in on the conversation. Tiki will also start talking if I'm on the phone as well.

You are making great progress with Tiki, only had him three weeks and he is already starting to talk, when being in the same room wow.
Continue talking you are on the right path

Re: Training your bird to talk

I am trying something new with Mishka this week. Lately he is beginning to say words almost immediately after hearing them.
Instead of making a cd, for him, I sat with him at night,
going over this sentence for a few minutes each night.
Did you drink your coffee, is it hot enough?

I videoed him earlier today, I guess he is busy practicing

Fluffing his feather's he probably thought here she goes again uggggg

That will go down well when a gentleman comes to visit you, and Rosie greets him, Hi honey. Add the word kiss kiss on now. In that way she will start learning to mix her words, and later on put words together to make sentences.

Re: Teaching your bird to talk

I love Mishka's videos.

Ruby's really starting to talk now. She still has the kind of scratchy parroty voice and I'm not sure how much that will change.

So far she says:
Hi, Rube-Rube
Hello, Ruby Girl
Whatcha doin'

And the funniest one has a story with it...Every day when she comes out of her cage for the first time, I carry her directly to her perch and ask her to poop (she saves it all up until she's out of her cage I think, because the first one is a doozy - we call it a mega-poop). When she does, I say "good girl!" The other day, we were watching TV together and both of us kind of dozing. She started doing her "poopy dance" and I was too lazy to take her to her perch so the plan was to let her just poop on me (bad, idea, I know). Anyway, as soon as she was done, she said "Good girl!"

At least I know she listens to me.
