Hello ,
I have adopted 2 green cheek conure siblings from the same clutch. A male and a female.
They came from a loving family who raised them with their parents until they realized they would never be able to handle the siblings in that situation. I lost my 13 year old green cheek a couple of weeks ago and have the cage space for the siblings. In their old home they were in the same cage with mom and dad.(a very large cage.) Their wings had never been clipped and they were permitted to fly freely in their room. They were trained to return to the cage when the previous master tapped the cage.
In their new home , they had their first wing clipping, and were introduced to separate cages. (Both large, and attached with an ajoining wall.)
The birds are eating and drinking, and will take treats from us by hand.
They are calling out to mom and dad and obviously would love to be together. Some believe that weaning from parents and each other is too much at one time. I have seen in the past that this breed of bird handles change very well. I feel that rather than multiple painful steps , all steps together at one time will be stressful but over with quicker and ultimately less stress full.
I trimmed their wings because this house is too dangerous for them to fly around in. We also have 11 foot ceilings and would not be able to catch them.
I'm keeping them in their cages until they make the space theirs. Then I plan to have one out at a time. So my fiancé and I can start bonding to them . I expect this process to take months given the birds age.
Does anyone have any comments on what we are doing or advice for bonding with these two? Does anyone disagree with separating the siblings?
