Rescueing Penny

LOL< I feel you.
I walked out all day with the new oatmeal-mix (porridge) smeared all over my lap area, also made a pretty sight I am sure.

Penny, you just keep making those joyful Quaker noises unto the world. Good girl, good boy, whatever... you're finally safe and sound, and it's your time to shine!

:DLol Tiredoldman thanks for the support!!! Your point that our home also is the home of our intelligent feathered beings hit home! But my shirt was so gross, I should have taken a picture, you know lentil soup can kinda look like upchucks ....I can laugh today ;) but I am still embarrassed. Thanks Galleriagila ,(I think) she really is a funny old bird and she is coming out of her shell. ChristaNL I am glad I am not alone in this world, somewhere out there is another parront cluelessly wearing food

Penny...she is coming out of her shell so fast this last week. I guess she is finally used to her new cage and new perches. When she is scared she flaps her wings and brays like a donkey. Yesterday and today I cought her on the floor exploring and looking like a little chicken. This was a huge suprise to me the first time!!! She can't fly yet, and has always stayed were I put her, the first time I thought maybe something scared her but I didn't hear the braying. Today I know I have a problem, and I won't leave the room with her out anymore!! See I have dogs and they have never seen a parrot on the floor before!!! I would never trust the dogs with Penny on the floor!!! Both times I found her she was just trucking around having fun I guess , and the dogs hadn't noticed thank goodness!!! When she came to me she could bark, and she has no fear of the dogs, so I guess she had been around some before. A whole new wrinkle for me though with her wanting to be a floor bird.. she has flight feathers now but can't fly. She has probably nevy been allowed to before. She came to me with wing constriction, this seems slightly better. If you have read this far do you have any thoughts on how to get her flying??? She is not going to let me stretch her wings as therapy at this point in our relationship...:( I am pleased she wants to explore but I can't have a floor bird!!!!

These are my pups, too much cuteness for one house! Oliver the one sitting up front was what caused the bite! Pixie is the white and blond one Oliver is next to her and is ger son, the black and white one is Sophia, abd tucked in the back is Alfie the father of Oliver! Some how Oliver grew twice as big as
his parrents!!! g

Penny updates she flew level at chest hight for seven feet! Yippie first flight! Her wings can stretch now, she does shrugs and wing flaps! But plucking is worse, she plucks her feathers and puts them in the food bowl, then later goes back and chews on them possible eats sine of them.....she also goes to her food bowl and poops in it, if I don't get it right away she eats that too... :( :( It's my belief that she suffered neglect and was forgotten and not fed at times....She will freak the f out if her food bowl is not kept full to the brim. If it's not completely full she gaurds it and won't leave the bowl. So my thinking is she saves her poop to eat in case she is starved, I have seen this in horses that were starved and dogs that have been starved. Of course other ideas are welcome. She has several mineral blocks , cuttle bone, chewable perches. On the plus side after three months of having her she us finally chewing on her toys. On another negative my GCC tried to make friends a few times and was rebuffed by Penny. Now Ta-dah flys to attack Penny... Penny doesn't fight back she runs away or flops to the floor...I hope ince Penny can really fly that will help some. Neptune and Penny are cautiously becoming friends.

Just a crazy idea (poor Penny, foodhoarding like mad) - why not get her one of those see-through birdfeeders : the ones with a clear acrylic cilinder and a smal opening where food comes out in the dish. Then she can ways see that there is a wagonload of food there, but she cannot foul it with anything (or at least: not much).

You can even make your own:

or just buy them

Putting feathers in the foodbowl and eat them?
Maybe she really needs some extra nourishment that she sees feathers as a resource?

(I have/had? the same issue with Sunny- and it is crazy how much more flexible her feathers are now she gets fed up on good stuf instead of sugary-pellets. She gets fortified oats now as well- they are supposed to replace the lost keratine-like substance that builds the feathers / sorry for not being precise, it is early here and my brain is trying... will send you a link after work)

CristaNL Thanks! Penny could need nutrition she doesn't eat pellets unless I hide them in eggs oatmeal and so on. She does eat her veggies tho and healthy human food. The feeder is an interesting idea, could be fun and will save me from wasting food. Don't forget to share that link after work.! Penny just had me laughing so hard. I put her on a hoop swing above my breakfast bar, when I turned back to her she was hanging by her beak with her feet in the air spinning so fast. At first I thought she tried to get down and was scared but no she was playing!!! She was so happy and so funny!

Soooo, My Penny is just a hoarder!!! I got her several preen toys, and a tip EllenD posted about shredding papper backs. So I have a special treat dish in the back of the cage abd she is keeping the shredded paper and bits if toys in this!!! What's also interesting is she is a night plucker, well now she is a night toy shredder lol. Maybe that will save her feathers, she has about an inch bare ring around the neck. I just don't want the plucking to get worse and I really want it to stop...

3 day no poop or feathers in food bowl! No picked feathers anywhere! Fluffy paper preen toys Almost demolished! New ones will be bought shortly! Will try some flight
Training and landings tomorrow, she has flight feathers but has only sailed at chest level once. I'm getting happy and hopeful....I know it's too soon, but the fact she is playing with her first toy, abd chewing on it instead of herself has me just so happy. And will order DNA test next week !! I want to know if she is a girl or not.

Oh wow...I love those good news-updates.
So...as long as (s)he can shred paper no feathers are flying?

Sounds like a sweet deal to me!
