Rescueing Penny

It is!!! She is also trying new foods! Climbing down my shoulder to my side table and stealing drinks, tossing stuff off the table. It's like she woke up as a new bird three days ago!!! And the life in her eyes is amazing! She is not "shut down" anymore!! I so wish more birds could be rescued... Like you with Sunny :) and the Grey's!

That is one of the best parts: when the bird is finally back!
No more shellshocked/semi-empty husk but a real bird.

And now they will drive you crazy :p best reward ever (?) :D

I was washing dishes with Penny on one shoulder and her stalker Neptune on the other. All that splashing made them want a bath. So I took Penny's bath dish to her cage, and they both jumped on. So I waited to see what would happen. Neptune is so patient with Penny's mock threats.

And wow after five months, they had their first kiss!!!! I'm just so proud of them both! Neptune being so gentle and patient. Penny finally getting brave and learning how to bird. I put in a second bowl and they bathed side by side.

Penny made her first semi controlled flight and landed on my shoulder!!!!!! Yippie!!!!!! I was holding a pasta treat and she wanted it! Didn't want to wait till I walked to her. I'm so proud!!!! First flight with landing where she wanted, instead of the floor!! Yippie!! Penny knew she accomplished something too her face was very pleased.

Oh wow, she really is becoming "all the bird she can be" with leaps and bounds.
Great job!

Thank you CristaNL!
I also just realized it's been a long time since she had stored her poops in her food dish! Infact I can't remember the last time she climbed down from the top of her cage to go poop in her bowl!!! I'm not finding any stored featheres in her food dish either! I dare not hope she has stopped plucking... But not pooping in her food dish is just so fantastic!!
Was it just last month that she really turned the corner! Yeah! No screaming, no biting, no poops in dish, has started trying to fly, has made bird friends, is exploring, is playing with toys!!! Five months what a difference!!

Penny made two controlled short flights one to land on chair and one to land on the couch!!! Both were because Ta-dah was bulling Penny. But the satisfaction of those landings was clear on Penny's face. It was like it finally hit home with her that she could pick landings and flight paths! Of course it's bad that Ta-dah is mean to Penny.its kinda yin and yang. All of Penny's motivation for flight and success is a direct result of Ta-dah picking on her.... Is it silly that these observations make me look at my own life trials differently? Hmmm. ;)

This is wonderful Laurasea, you must be very proud! Now if only Penny could teach Fang to not poop in his food dish that’d be great!!

(Nice to see your name all lit up in POTM Winner’s green too :) )

Penny, though not a strong flier, now always lands on furniture!!!!!! No more floor bonk landings!! She is good at making some flight adjustment and can fly farther!! Just super proud as this is almost a year in the making!!!
A recap if you are just joining Penny's story. I found her by chance at a pet store, and wasn't looking to add to my flock. But this screaming , lunging, unhappy girl was on a shelf in a very dark corner of a store, in a cage the size of a shoebox, the cage and the bird covered in poop...My heart broke and I had to rescue her. I never dreamed she would become a sweet sweet, funny girl so fast. Her first words miniuts after getting her home were, F off! We did have some set backs , screaming and some bites. She only cussed one other time , to tell me f u after I changed her to a new cage, she doesn't handle change...she certainly knows the value of a well placed cuss. She has never since cussed. But faster than I ever imagined she quit biting and screaming and became a wonderful friend. Though it has taken time to build her confidence, get her engaged in life again, to get her moving and making choices for herself....
Maybe you can feel inspired to give a rescue bird a chance to!!

Penny has come such a long way hasn’t she? She has a whole new lease on life because of you, you sure were the right bird mum in the right place at the right time!

After her rescue and obviously never having flown in her adult life, I didn't tji k we would get here!!!! Neptune and I where both saying good girl over and over :) For all you out there with older rescues, it's possible!!!

So cool! Maybe Stanley will fly too someday :).

I just can't help but shout to the world! Yippie Penny is getting this flying thng down!!!! She can now fly to me and land on my shoulder!! She can turn and land gently on perches on the cage tops !!! Her flight has become more graceful and less frantic, lol and she's not screaming the whole time on flight. She can't do loops around the house yet, but I'm sure that day isn't far away!!! Penny you amaze me!! From going clunck straight to the floor, to gliding clunks to the floor, to a few flaps and softer clunks to the floor, too gliding flaps to furniture and fumble landings, to furniture soft landings, to actually flying awarkardly and making direction changes. To flying to cage top and crashing to flying there and landings on perches!!!! Her confidence is through the roof!! She is now flying short flights just because she can , or because Neptune and I brag so much tell how good and wonderful she is!!! I write this because today she took about ten flights already just for the fun of it!!!
Someone, maybe Sailboat once said it's the landings that scare birds that can't fly well, and I find that true. Once Penny could land on furniture instead of crashing to the floor , she started to improve rapidly, and I could see her fear go way down. She quit screaming I'm my God I'm going to die.... lol to look out I'm coming in hot lol, those are my advanced parrot scream interpretations!!
Today all landings have been soft and right were she wanted!!!! A year in the making!!!!! And to think I gave up that she would be able to fly. Credit to the flock, and Ta-dahs bullying
Without conflict and stress how would we triumph?!
Edit: I should also mention she had wing constructions, from never flying, from being in a tiny tiny cage were she couldn't streetch and wing flap. She doesn't have full extension yet, but the improvement is more than get vet and I thought she could make. :)

Penny is doing a great job of flying. She looks terrible at it, but she gets the job done! It hasn't even been a full month of flying. She can fly to me and land on my shoulder even if I'm walking around!!! She can fly and land wherever she wants to even though it's very labored. So proud of her. Since she has made it this far, I know one day soon she will fly pretty and have more strength. I just love documenting her progress!!

That’s so awesome that she gets around so well, when you thought she would never fly :). Bindi looks a bit like a flying tank but she gets the job done and no longer has laboured breathing after. Screamer no longer uses walls, cushions and people to stop travel - she can actually hit her mark and nail the landing. So I’m absolutely certain that Penny will get her pilot’s license and develop the endurance!

Way to go Penny! I think once she gains her confidence in sticking those landings the rest will flow naturally :)

I had my cousin and her husband staying with me for a visit. Penny fell madly in love with my cousin husband!!! Rode everywhere in his shoulders, snuggles into his neck gave him kisses! He shared all his parrot safe food with her. Whenever I came near she hissed at me lol
Pikachu and Ta-dah were willing to step up for them both . Neptune wanted nothing to do with them and hid .
When they left Penny looked for him, and kept saying hello , hello ... I think she wanted to go with!!

Well that’s gratitude for ya!!
