i hate to be the bearer of bad news....but i saw a post recently with a parrot shredding real receipt paper rolls in someone's thread but i couldn't find it.

The paper may be toxic and contains bpa. there are non toxic ones available, too. i hope the ones for birds, sold with toys are fine. i guess you have to check the description. most stores use the bad paper when we purchase something. You can read about it here:

BPA: Paper Receipts Found To Contain Disputed Chemical

also, there are more articles available all over. just search "receipt paper toxic"

Thanks for posting this. I had never heard about it. It's good to know this.

It might have been me - but my recommendation was the one from MyParrotShop, which was designed for parrots. Senior Accountant - Hanging Toys - My Parrot Shop - Parrot Toys and Parrot Supplies in Australia

Was this the one you're referring to, or was there another post about using the "real" receipt rolls?

Thanks for the heads up. I've emailed MyParrotShop to find out what their till rolls are made of as a safety precaution, as I've recommended the product to a few people, and use it myself.

I trust MyParrotShop, and from my knowledge, it was plain paper, I just want to hear confirmation from their rep to be sure. :)

Washington Post said:
The Environmental Working Group found BPA on 40 percent of the receipts it collected from supermarkets, automated teller machines, gas stations and chain stores. In some cases, the total amount of BPA on the receipt was 1,000 times the amount found in the epoxy lining of a can of food, another controversial use of the chemical.

Absolutely crazy... And to think, how many people do you see who walk around and hold a receipt in their mouth whilst trying to find their keys in a pocket or bag?

I'm assuming that that is what allows receipts to 'fade' and still have that kind of 'glossy' feel to them. Worrying when you think about it.

Just got a reply back. They're quick!

Hi,

Never fear. The rolls we sell are plain paper rather than the paper used in Direct Thermal Receipt printers.

Kind regards,

So the till rolls from MyParrotShop are safe. :) Though, I would recommend checking other stores and contacting them directly if you are wary.

I'm pretty sure that the receipt tape they are referring to is the quick printing sort that is, I think, heat reactive. You likely could just pick up some adding machine rolls that are--unless i'm sorely mistaken--are made from normal paper.

We did checking on this prior to getting calculator paper for MAC.

It is imperative that it IS NOT thermal paper.

It must be plain white calculator paper.

Yeah, I believe that the thermal paper, that has the water resistant surface.glossy finish is what contains BPA

BPA in receipts could be a major source of chemical exposure, a new study suggests. Pressure your favorite retailers to go with paperless receipts. Although BPA-free receipt paper is available, it costs more. If retailers want to save money, they can forgo paper receipts altogether by choosing an electronic receipts system. Implementing paperless receipts gives companies a legit reason to say they're going green. Plus, it helps customers declutter, too. Clutter has been linked to stress and anxiety.http://www.rodale.com/home-organization-tips

I don't think this is proper place for this posting as it doesn't really have anything to do with or even mention parrots it might do better in the off topic section
