Hi Lori, and welcome! Does your whole family live with you? You sound like a busy person! You've come to the right place for a chat. I'm pretty new here myself. Psst...these people don't shut up!

I only have 5 human children at home right now, my oldest son is at fort hood with his wife and my oldest daughter and her husband live almost an hour away and the second daughter lives 30 minutes away.

Welcome to the forum, Lori. You are busy! But, it will keep you young, right?:)

Hello to all bird lovers. I'm a newbie here and pretty new to the parrot world but my love for them is not a new thing. Since i can remember, I have wanted an african grey. About 2 months ago i came across 2 beautiful blue fronted amazons that I fell in love with. They are male and female and the female is just as sweet as can be. The male can be sweet but have to be more cautious with him. After having them for 2 months, my urge to have an african grey was even stronger...needless to say, i finally got my wish. I found a little girl that has been picking her feathers for a year now and i want to help her. A few days later I found a male that needed a new home and brought him home too. So now i have my 2 blue fronted amazons and my 2 african greys plus i have a couple of black masked lovebirds and i love them all. I would like some advise on how to keep my female african grey (Anabelle) from picking her feathers. I have baught her toys and a big cage but she is still picking...any advise will be appreciated.

Hi, Diana, and welcome to the forum! You have quite a flock there! First you should take the Grey to the vet to rule out any physical reason for the plucking. If there is one, then hopefully the vet will be able to help you with that.

:blue2: My name is Chantelle and i just purchased a Blue Quaker Parrot. His name is Monty and he is the cutest little guy ever! I am a first time bird owner and I have soooooo many questions! I have wanted a bird for several years but i was very apprehensive to get one because I have four dogs and I was worried they would scare him too much! After going to the pet store to get more fish i played with the birds as i always do, and came home and started to do more research and up popped Monty! it felt meant to be and we went to pick him up the very same night! I got him off kijiji which i know is aweful :11: so i really dont have enough background on him. I was told he is a male and about 7 months old, his cage was very dirty and unkept but he was very alert and curious and came right to me. I knew he was meant to be mine :D We love him so much and any advice would be great!!

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like Monty needed you and thank you for giving him a better life!

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Hello all...I'm new here because last week I had a parrot literally drop onto my porch. I heard a loud crash and went out to see what it was and this parrot has flown into my bedroom window. He was being chased by the big, huge crows that we have in the neighborhood. He was dazed but seemed ok. He was very hungry and thirsty. I searched craigslist and various other places to see if anyone had lost a bird like this....and nothing! No answer to flyers either. I kept him overnight until I could figure out what to do with him. I felt bad for him and wanted to make sure he was ok so, I took him to an avian vet. The vet stated that he was extremely underweight, malnourished and neglected. He also did not have an id band or any microchip. His nails were so overgrown that they curved over on to themselves. He couldn't hold onto a perch hardly at all. I had him all trimmed up and he seems to be doing much better. He has really bonded with me so I guess I need to be looking for items that will help him flourish. I didn't expect to take on the expense of a bird, so I need to try to find items for him he will like that are fairly inexpensive. I already found a nice cage on craigslist for him so now I need some other things to keep him busy! Do you have any advise on "must haves" for this guy?

I have been doing a ton of research about how to care for him. I have been feeding him Harrison's coarse pellets (recommended by his vet) and fresh fruits and veggies. He seems to like just about all of that. The only thing that he continually tosses out of his bowl are any type of peppers.

He has really gotten used to taking a shower and seems to like it! I only shower him during the afternoon when it is warmest. I don't heat my house ($$$) so I am concerned that he may get cold. I cover his cage with a blanket at night so that he isn't too cold. I live in California so it doesn't freeze here or anything but, I think it is cold at times.

I never thought that I would have a bird much less a beautiful parrot like this! I did have a parakeet/budgie when I was about 10 years old but that was more than 30 years ago! It is amazing how quickly I have become attached to him. I am calling him "Crash" because that is how he came into my life...is that mean???

I am really enjoying reading through the forums and getting as much information as I can.

Hi Kimberly! What a beautiful amazon you inherited by surprise. I think it's ok to call him Crash, lol! Thank you for taking him to the vet and feeding him right. He will need perches and some toys of course, but don't be surprised if it takes him awhile to play with the toys. It sounds like he was loose a long time. As long as it's above freezing honestly he will be fine if he's not in drafts. Of course being warmer than that is something we all enjoy. Maybe you get him a bird safe space heater for those cold nights.

It sounds like he is your baby and sees you as his savior.

Hi Kimberley... I think it was meant to be.. Im a great believer in fate :) Crash is beautiful and I am sure he will settle in with you really well

Hello there,
This is our first time joining a forum (yoshi and I)
Really looking forward to developing some connections with people as passionate about birds as me (or crazy so my man tell me).
Yoshi is an almost 2 year old Quaker parrot with a huge personality.
He has been free flight since he has gone through his first moult and grown his first flight feathers.
We are learning about being outside at the moment. It's taking lots of confidence from him and lots of patience and trust from me.
I feel a little like a mum sending her only child away on a school trip...
So far he has discovered a love of grass and doing silly crazy flying acrobatics above my house.
I'll post some photos soon, but I'm off to explore the forums now :)

Welcome to our flock! :)
