New Members

been lerking around for a few days and figured it was time to make my first post

My name is Brian and Im about to adopt a DYH male tonight. A friend had this bird past down from his father and the bird wasnt very friendly to anyone but my friend. I went in to see the bird and he took to me as far as letting me pet handle and it even groomed me. the family was in shock and about a month later we got the phone call asking if we wanted it.

My family has had birds since I was young and always seemed to get along with them. My folks have had an african gray for about 20 years and its always been a fun bird to teach and show love.

My new bird will have 2 cats to deal with but they are declawed so I hope I can have everyone on the same page.

I will post pictures after we get the bird settled in and hope to have a long relationship with our new family member.

:green2::green2: Hi Everyone,
I am about to get my first parrot. I've had lots of dogs and other pets but never a bird. I live in the Hudson Valley, NY. I love birds, and I am an avid birdwatcher, but never had enough time to devote to a parrot until now. Our little guy is a male Solomon Eclectus and he's 5 mos old. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on ( Parrots for Dummies, Barron's Eclectus Guide, and several behavior and teach your bird to talk books). I have also been reading a lot of the Eclectus posts . I already have a large cage , playgyms, and a ton of toys. I work from home so I will be here for company. I feel like I should be prepared but find I'm a little nervous. If all goes well we will be picking him up this weekend. We're still undecided about a name, but will have one before Saturday. I'll post a photo when he arrives. I can't wait.

I have a couple of avian vets in mind but nothing really close by. I live in Dutchess County, NY. Has anyone used a vet they like in this area??? I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Joann:rolleyes:

Hi, Joann, and welcome to the forum! You must be very excited! I have always been interested in Eclectus as well. There are many people here who can help with your questions.

Welcome to the flock Joann! :)

:orange:Hello!!! My name is Daniel Clark and I am the proud pet of Apollo, the Sun Conure. He turned 1 year old last month. I look forward to learning a lot from everyone and being able to share our journey.

Apollo, or Polly as the 18 year old calls him, is my buddy. He knows my schedule and will let me know that I need to see him when I get home. When I eat, he likes to go to his cage and eat as well. He is partial to me, but is generally friendly to everyone. Like most conures he has his moods and I give him his space when he needs it. His my best friend and loves to just hang off of the front of my shirt or my shoulder and hang out.

Hi my name is Katie, and my husband and I are thinking about getting a large parrot. I joined because i would like to make an informed desicion. I've never been one to get a pet on a whim. We just lost our oldest Great Dane to bone cancer. So i would like to learn from every one, and see if a bird could be a good fit for our family. I work part time as a bartender, and my husband is in the army, he will be on orders to stay state side for 3 years. We have a 1 year old daughter and a 3 year old great dane.

My husband had birds when he was growing up, I however just had dogs. As i will be the primary care taker, i am open to all opinons, but please just be nice. :)

thanks alot!!!!

Hi Katie, I think you will find the members here to be nice and helpful. I would be concerned about a large parrot though just due to the age of your daughter. They are capable of biting hard enough to possibly disfigure even an adult. You might want to start with a smaller bird and get a larger one down the road when she is older. I highly recommend a budgie or cockatiel with children and first time bird owners. They have every bit as much personality as larger birds, but less complex moods. They also have a tendency to like everyone that likes them and once tame are not nippy (and couldn't seriously injure anyway). The males of both species can learn to talk and male budgies are actually one of the best talking of all birds. For the first 30 years of my life I only had budgies and they were some of my favorite pets. The only concern of a small bird with such a large dog would be if the dog decided to attack it or jump on the cage. But, even large parrots can easily fall victim to a large dog. So you will need to ask yourself how predatory the dog is. From what I understand, Great Danes are pretty easy going.

thanks Roxie!!!! I will take a look at budgies! Our Dane is easy going with every one, the only time ive seen him around a bird was in our back yard. A babu bird fell out of its nest and i thought for sure Cubbie was going to eat it, instead, he followed it around the yard as it hopped around.... it was incredible.

Then he might be a very good dog to have around a smaller bird. Any of my dogs would have grabbed that baby bird up and killed it.

I think for the majority of families a budgie or cockatiel is the perfect bird. If you get a hand tamed raised one from a breeder you will get one that is already tame and friendly with people. If you buy one from a pet store, it will probably be a parent raised bird that will require taming. They tame with patience, but you can't beat a hand raised baby.

I should scan in some of my baby pictures and post them on the forum. In most of them, our first budgie is sitting on me.

that would be awesome1 My dane who just dies would have snached it up too! That is why i was so scared when i saw it and cubbie saw it, but hes just as aswwet and dumb as big dogs come.

Just to be on the safe side though, you might want to put the dog out or in another room when the bird is out. He may not mean to kill it but want to play with it. My cat doesn't want to kill my birds; she wants to roll around and wrestle with them I think, lol! I have to put her in my bedroom when the birds are out.
