How much did you pay for your Macaw..

Hi All,

Just purchased an unrelated pair of B&G, young birds, for $12000. Won't receive them till July after they are weaned.

Could have picked up B&G for 4500ea if I wanted to, become more common in Australia, which I guess is a good thing.

Paid a premium from a reputable breeder because he had spent the time, over the phone discussing anything regarding macaws and he could prove the history of each of his breeding stock.

Have placed a deposit for a pair of greenwings and Scarlett's for next year also. Pairs setting me back 20000 ea pair.

Always wanted macaws, now I can afford them. Interesting to see the wife's reaction when she finds out how much I've spent.

Have been promised a hyacinth bird from a family friend who is attempting o breed his pair, as there a very, very few of these birds in Australia, I'm led to believe less then 10 birds. He indicated it is sometime away though as those with these birds are trading amongst themselves only to try and build up numbers before selling as pets or for collections.

Wish I lived in the US, was always envious of the prices and availability of all macaws.

Welll, I've never really paid for my macaws they were all relquished to me. People pretty much dropped them at my door saying here I hate this animal for all different types of reasons. I also have a hy and an emerald macaw In someone's will for me so I guess I can't really say I have ever had to pay for my macaws other then we rescue two blue and golds for $1200 way long ago. Other then that everything has been thrown at me or the were going to let it go or kill it or some ridcolous story. Now of course we have had to pay for cages and toys and realize the initial cost of these birds and in no way take for granted what we have or don't understand what they really cost and so on.

One day I hope o buy a baby macaw to raise I'm leaning towards a red fronted or possible blue throated.

@sono I know what you mean I mean there are just macaws being dropped everywhere here we need some Australians to come get some;) it would defiantly help.

Ill come get some! Lol
Always wanted a macaw, always will, prices in Australia are massive :( wish I was in the US!

If you could I'd get you setup with a macaw but I can't:(. It really is ridcolous I mean macaws, cockatoos, anything are just being given up all over the united states, and there so many that need homes so that's why I have all rescue macaws:)

I paid $950 for my 4 month old B&G in south TX. Lots of breeders down here, probably because we are close to the border.

I know Hyacinths are exceptionally expensive. they had one at this place called the bird Jungle in NY, he himself wasn't for sale but they offered to breed him for 13,000. A B&G (what I'm looking into getting in the future) was only about 1500

Here in a America we're jealous of your cockatoo prices lol although here it's probably a good thing, there are already a ton of cockatoos who are neglected. Galahs cost between 1,500-2,500

in Greece:

B&G, scarlets, greenwings 1200-1800euros
african greys 600-1200euros
cockatoos 1200-2000euros
hyacinths 2000-3000euros...

plenty of amateur/hobbyist breeders...climate helps as well...

but i cannot find red front (sorry) macaws, i ve tried a lot, i do want one....

A parrot isn't a dog, so you can't just stick two parrots together, allow them to mate and separate them... it doesn't work that way...

Unless he's a kakapo....

I'm unfamiliar with "red winged macaws" - unless you mean a red shouldered macaw? aka a Hahns?

Idk how they do it, I assume they've already got a mate but they keep the mate wherever the owner lives. I think he's the owner's personal bird, I just know that particular macaw wasn't for sale, and they could get a baby somehow.

That's just odd... I'm not sure I'd trust those people... unless they meant they have a breeding pair (male is not part of the pair) or they can get chicks...

Males and females help to raise the chicks. You can't stick two birds together, allow them to mate, then separate them and expect the hen to do all the work. It is up to the male to bring food to the hen, in certain species the males will help to incubate the eggs, and will also help feed the chicks.

Once out of the nest, the parents will wean the chicks and it's usually the father (if not both) who wean the chicks completely.

If this hyacinth is sitting in a store by himself (i.e. no other hyacinths), it would be extremely cruel to pair him up to a mate, have them breed, then separate them again.

They aren't dogs and cats. You can't use parrots as "studs" (hence you never really see "stud services" for parrots).

If this person who owns the hyacinth is serious about breeding this particular bird, then the bird wouldn't be in the store.

Constantine - I got my RFM from a very good breeder down in Texas. Now if you are willing to go to Texas and arrange to fly back to Greece with your new RFM baby it would totally be worth it. She does not have any babies right now but I bet they are going to nest soon.

Valentino is going to be 8 months old on Friday and I am very pleased with him. There are day he pushes my buttons and drives me up a wall but I think we both have cabin fever from being stuck in the house. Spring has yet to arrive and normally by now I would of had him outside beginning his harness training.

You would end up doing this with your RFM baby

Once you get a RFM there is no turning back. Your life will be enriched with such a naughty loving parrot.

I didn't know that macaws were this cheap in Hungary compared to some places.

If you buy these birds from a breeder, the price is about:
B&G Macaw: ~800$
Greenwing Macaw: ~1000$
Scarlet Macaw: ~2000$

Unfortunately a couple of species aren't available at all, for example the Hyacinth.

A breeder not far from me has hyacinth's for sale. Her price is 12k with a cage. And another breeder/friend has blue throats, and I think they are selling for 2k.

IMO what I paid for my bird is not something someone should ask me to post on a forum... I don't see the point to see how much everyone spent on their birds. Lots of people rescue and spend a few hundred others spend thousands. It makes no difference.

Re: how much did your macaw cost?

I don't have a macaw as they are pretty rare here. But a pure blue and gold macaw can sell for around $7500 here.
