How much did you pay for your Macaw..

Well Alisana, that was quite a list of animals and fish I thumbed through... It's nice to know exactly what is and is not allowed and that spells it out pretty much. Here in America we do not have to have licenses or permits to own or sell macaws and they can freely move within the USA but there is no more importation of birds on the CITES list. There certainly is plenty of breeders of birds that were brought here in the 70's

I've seen $8000 in North Queensland. No breeders up here (or very few/not well known) so no competition. =\

im in south east queensland, and the 2 professional breeders (well the ones who are advertised in birdkeeper mag) are both down here which is good..
but most of the macaw breeders are elsewhere in australia haha
im not sure queensland has any greenwing breeders? i have seen a breeding pair advertised, but not any babies.

you could always just come for a long drive down :p haha

There is a Greenwing breeder in Queensland - I just can't remember his name! lol

Yeah, it can be really troublesome - but it's understandable. We're essentially an 'island' so cut off from other countries, and potential diseases/viruses/feral 'pests' and they want to keep it that way, so restricting imports is the best way to go about it.

The same thing happens with other species as well - I keep fish, and I like catfish; but many of the varieties I want are banned from being imported. :( And given small genetic pools, it drives their price up. (E.g. Zebra Pleco was about $2000 I think?) and an example in the bird world is the hyacinth - $53000

Here in BRAZIL i paid 1200 U.S.

Brazil is the best place for birds in my opinion!
More than 3000 species and subspecies of birds!
Including several in extinction and some extinct like the little blue macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) today only in captivity.

does anyone have a rare macaw on this fourm. a macaw that most people don't have

I would like to see one person with a 'Blue Head Macaw' I have always wondered why they never made it into the pet market

Blue headed macaws are extremely rare... both in captivity as well as in the wild. Think you need a license/permit to own/breed/transport them? Could be wrong.
BLUE HEADED MACAWS

Here's another rare macaw! The red bellied! I know someone who is 'pet-sitting' a pet red bellied, and I'd honestly rather see that bird in a breeding program rather than as a pet! I wasn't even aware that these birds *were* in the USA... and to find that one is, and is being kept as a pet... I just don't like the idea of it!

To be more on topic... if you don't count conures, I've never owned/cared for a macaw! However, many of the birds I've cared for through the years have been second hand, plus, pets... and not because I went looking for them! More like people knew I had birds, that I liked birds, and gave me birds! Both of the conures that I've had/have, 7 cockatiels, a multitude of budgies, a lovebird and some grass parakeets were given to me because people found out that I have birds and they have a bird(s) they no longer want or can no longer care for and give them to me. I've found a homes for a few, as I don't consider myself to be a "forever" home, and I must realize my limitations as well.

I'm in a position at the moment that I *could* adopt a young green cheek conure, and she would be the youngest conure I've ever taken in... but at the same time, I don't feel comfortable taking in another bird when I don't have any extra cash on hand for anything (thank you car that keeps needing repairs after just getting you paid off!). That, and I don't necessarily want a small conure, as cute and adorable as they are! Push comes to shove, I would take her, but her current owner is fine taking care of her until a suitable home can be found!

I payed 250 for my blue and gold macaw, we live in california :D i so love her <3 shes a really good bird im so glad shes part of my flock :)

1,100 $ for my B&G Macaw Eli, she was 3,5 months old when I got her :)

Live in Hawaii, but imported my B&G from Cali. Price was $900+health cert+carrier+import permit fees+plane fare

I'm paying $900 for my Severe Macaw I have on order through Bevs Parrot Place in Nevada.

I have been looking at B&G's for a couple of years. In Western Australia they are slowly coming down. A couple of years ago they were going for $6000 but now they are going for $4500.
I have been talking to the breeder I got my Ecky from, She is currently Hand raising 3 B&G chicks for her Neighbour who breeds them. I am trying to talk my husband into parting with the money but... its a lot of money.. I still have until February before it will be ready so there is hope...... Fingers crossed.

I got Darcy for FREE! He was lost and needed a home. =D

There are Hahns Macaws going for $1000 in QLD if anyone is interested ;) I would have jumped at the chance if I hadnt already put my deposit down on another bird :)

I got both of my Catalina hybrids from the breeder in my state. I brought Roscoe home at 5 months & he was $1,200.00. I brought Angel home the same day. He is Roscoe's older brother & is a special needs bird.

The breeder was looking for a home that would accept him for his disabilities and I asked to be considered. He was not free, but she did sell him to me at a reduced price of $500.00 which I gladly paid.

I am on a waiting list for a baby green wing from a breeder in my state from next years hatchings and it will cost $1,850.00.
