What bird would you LOVE to see in person?

also think it would be cool to see some of the little birds of paradise. The ones with all the funky feathers:)

Ooh! Yes! Forgot about those. I think ALL the types of BOP have some sort of funky feathers :D Have you seen the Nature special with David Attenborough? AMAZING.

The ones I really would love to see in person is Spix and Lear's Macaw as they're both on the endangered species list.....

I'd love to see the Spix's and Lear's! So rare you don't even see them at a zoo. Actually, why do zoos always just have common parrots? Lol come on, it's a ZOO.

I was fortunate to spend time with more large breeds than I could even name when I was a kid, at times the collection of this owner (who had pets and fostered/rehomed birds) would be 30+. Built into the walls of his home and an entire humid garden in the basement, no lie. So I can't think of a breed I would like to see but I can think of one bird in specific I would love to have met and that's Alex.

I would LOVE to meet a black palm 'too and a hyacinth macaw.

I was lucky enough to handle a hyacinth as a kid, her name was GiGi. She went on loan to the Calgary Zoo at one point, I didn't know at the time how amazing it was that I was able to meet her. I wish camera phones had existed when I was 10. I did tell all my friends I knew her though, and waved hi to her when I saw her there.

personally i think a kakapo would be pretty cool to meet, either that or any of the birds of paradise

Bald Eagle hands down. After seeing videos of eagles getting close to people I was even more intrigued. We have ravens here, but I have to say the most annoying bird I encountered ever so far is that dang black and white magpie and it's friends in Red Deer, Alberta, CA. In Texas, the sun comes up after 5am in the summer, in Red Deer, it was up before 5am and they would sit outside my bedroom window as they say "singing the song of my people" right over my head. They are loud and proud, lol.

Oh goodness! Just reminded me of a WONDERFUL game the ravens play....

They jump on our roof, and try to take the caps off of our ventilation-things. Metal, tapping with a beak while they caaw. At 5am. Oh yay!

I always loved magpies, but I bet they can be annoying.

Eagles are in the plentiful up here in Alaska :) down in Valdez during pink salmon season (July ish) you can easily see 10 a day. It's wonderfully amazing.

Julie, what a great thread!
I would LOVE to see a black palm cockatoo and a Kookaburra in person.

I would love to see a wild Spix's macaw, maybe one day.

Seeing flocks of macaws and other South American parrots at a clay lick would be wonderful also :)

Also, not to make anyone jealous or anything, but:

I'm pretty sure there aren't any wild ones left. What's left is in bedding facilities trying to save them.

They are believed to be extinct in the wild, but no one knows for sure. It's highly likely. However, once captive populations are high enough, a slow reintroduction will commence with Al Wabra and the ACTP, in collaboration with the Brazilian government.

This thread has reminded me that my daughter fell in love with the poem by Edgar Allen Poe and learned it by heart when she was about eleven. She has always maintained she wants to own a pet raven and name it 'Quoth'. Of course, she would teach it to say 'Nevermore' and to make knocking sounds. :D

I like that idea.

Western Slender billed Cockatoo :)

Just a little mindless something for a Saturday :)...

I would absolutely LOVE to see a Raven in person! (besides my BW Pionus ;)).
All we see here are crows. Anyone have Ravens where you live?

How about you? Doesn't matter what type of bird. Or if you're longing to see your dream parrot species and have never seen one in person... What is it?

Then why not get a BUST OF ARIS AND PUT IT JUST ABOVE THY CHAMBER DOOR? :D Okay, do not tell me you don't get that one!

NEVERMORE!

Well, I think you posted that pic just to make everyone jealous you get to play with these beauties at your job:) :blue::blue::blue: (you are a zookeeper right? are those birds at the zoo or are those someones pets?)

I actually got to hold a hy once (more the bird insisted, and you don't tell that giant beak "no" lol). Beautiful bird, seemed sweet but VERY happy it got to go back to it's owner. I could only imagine the mess a bird of that size makes, not to mention what may happen if it got angry:eek: Takes a very special person to have those giant parrots. The man I met had his bird for like 25 years or something and obviously took very good care of it. Stunning animals, but surely not for everyone.

I'm lucky. I've either seen or played with all or most of these birds...

When I was with the Lindsay, we had all sorts of owls, including several snowy owls. (I had a baby snowy owl that thought I was mother once, but my roommates would not have appreciated a freezer full of dead rats to feed it... )

My mom worked with a one-winged eagle. She was about the only person who could get near it. Talk about an intense bird handling situation. He had perched on a power poll and become electrocuted. Had to have one wing amputated. Woke up in a holding pen... YEAH! YOU WANT A TAMING DOWN A BIRD PROJECT?! TRY THAT ON FOR SIZE...

A pair of eagles nest on their property in Washington State...

Hys I got to play with all the time. Rachel had a BP2... her mother has it now. Sarah is supposed to inherit it when Rachel's mom dies.

Obviously, spix and lears are no gos... you can count the people who have played with those guys probably on your hands and toes...

I met Dr. Pepperburg. Didn't get to meet Alex though... I guess that would be at the very top of my list as well. He was amazing...

But so is Tusk sometimes!

I'm going with Alex...

I don't think I have a favorite or a bird in specific I'd like to meet. Pretty much every bird I come in contact with I'm overly exciting about.

Even when I go play Frisbee golf this time of year, I see the fledgling mockingbirds hopping around and I act like it's the first time I've ever seen one. Boyfriend thinks I'm nuts but I'm sure he appreciates how overly-simple it is to keep me happy.

When I used to go visit my grandparents in Florida they had a nesting pair of bald eagles in a tree behind their house, so I saw them every year.

But I don't have a particular species I'd like to see.. I'd really like to interact with a mature Vasa or maybe a couple other parrot species, but that's mostly because I'm also interested in adding one to my flock in a few years. :p

Just show me a bird and I'll be happy haha. That's pretty much how it goes every time I go outside. :)

@Mekaisto- I'd LOVE to see a Pesquet's! You worked with them at the zoo? Not many in captivity anywhere in the world I'd imagine?

There are Hyacinths at our bird stores here several times a year, and though they're gorgeous and amazing looking in person, I have no desire to hold and cuddle one. Even though they're friendly in the store, they're just so giant, heavy, and cumbersome to hold lol.

TIL YOU PLAY WITH THEM THE FIRST TIME, AND CAN'T SEEM TO SET THEM DOWN...

Seriously, the first time I played with a Hy-Hy, it lasted two hours. And the bird adopted me! He refused to get off my arm. Both feet and his beak. We finally managed to bribe him off, but not without a struggle...

Yeah, that not taking NO for an answer... pretty much says it!

Yeah, my hub likes to go to the bird store and play with and hold the big macaws. He's not even a seasoned "bird person" but birds (animals) seem to really take to him.

It seems like ALL types of animals I tend to like the "smaller" ones. Miniature this and that lol. Even dogs... I admire large dogs, but if it came down to reality I'd feel like a smaller one was a nice size. Poi's and Pi's, nice size too :). I have absolutely no idea how I became a 'small animal' lover haha.
