Zazu and Zoey - Cockatiels
Hi there!
I currently have two cockatiels and I'm playing with the thought of getting bigger parrots some time in the future.

Now my biggest concern is their noise level, my cockatiels are kind of screamers, even tho they have an entire room, each otehr, loads of toys etc. they just like to scream a lot.

So compared to cockatiels I was wondering, how loud would a conure or pionus be?
Is it possible to keep them in apartments?

And one of the reasons I'd love to have a bigger bird would be to take them outside, carrier and harness - and at some point, maybe after a training course or something - even free flight train them. That would be the dream, but I dont expect it to actually happen.
Id love to take it out in a harness or carrier in the same way, so maybe a bird species thats not easily extremely spooked would be great. If the bird allows it, I would love to even travel with it.

Or are there other species Im forgetting that might fit? It would be perfect, but not mandatory, if they got along with cockatiels

Thank you in advance :)

I've had a male cockatiel and I didn't think he was very loud, at least not compared to my Goffin's cockatoo, but conures can be pretty loud, especially sun conures, jendays and nandays. Green cheeks aren't quiet either. It's very hard to live in an apartment and have birds larger than a budgie unless your neighbors and landlord are very tolerant or hard of hearing.

I can't really compare to cockatiels because I've never had them... but I have a GCC in an apartment, so with quieter conure species it is possible (just like DonnaBudgie said Aratinga conures are much louder and it would be risky to keep them because of the neighbors). My conure has some moments of being loud but it's usually single "scream attacks" - one type is because either he gets scared of something or just... wants to scream for no reason (it happens once per few days and lasts from 1 up to few minutes) and another type of very loud scream is when he's having fun with certain types of "toys" by dropping it and screaming (if you want, I have a video on how this type of scream sounds). Our neighbors never complained, so I guess in most cases such single screams should be acceptable (of course no guarantee because people are different...). I mean the loudest types of noise, it's not like he's quiet for the rest of the day

I've never owned a pionus but from what I heard I think they are a better choice because they are kind of quiet

Short answer, LOUD.

Cockatiels are such quiet birds imo because even their loudest screams aren’t nearly as ear piercing as your average conure’s. They can be noisy and scream a lot, sure—but so can conures.

That’s not to say they’re not able to be kept in apartments, however, it’s really up to the individual bird. I would say an average conure would be a great apartment bird. A noisy conure, however, not so much.

This is a great opportunity for you to rescue a bird from a shelter whose noise habits are already fairly known. I promise you, you don’t want to get yourself into a situation where you have to rehome a bird because it’s too noisy. I had to leave Zephyr at my parents house while I’m away at college because I can’t keep him in my dorm and it’s the absolute WORST. It’s definitely something to think about, and I’d much rather be safe than sorry in your case.

Tl;dr: a conure could be an option but they’re MUCH louder than cockatiels, and since no bird is really a “quiet” bird, you’ve got to be careful with your choice :)

It also depends on your neighbors. Some neighbors are ultra sensitive and picky and others are pretty chill but you can't pick your neighbors. Plus, you may have good neighbors now but picky ones next year. Having been evicted because of bird noise can follow you around when you need a reference for an apartment lease.

I have 6 cockatiels and 2 green cheeks. The conures are by far louder than the cockatiels. After roughly two years living in the same room, the cockatiels will still jump when the conures let out one of their shrieking screams.
When the cockatiels all get to singing and chirping, it seems like the conures get annoyed with it and start squawking like crazy bound and determined shout them up. An apt is no place for a conure in my opinion.

Well said

Im happy it works for you :) Maybe not all hope is lost for me in this regard

Wow, I should really visist a place with conures, I've never heard them in real life - I thought mine were loud already

Yes definetly, Im sorry you had to leave your little friend for now

Do you have green cheeks? I think I've actually underestimated that difference, thank you for your expirience

Thank you all for helping me get a better understanding!! :)) I really appreciate it

I congratulate you on doing research first. Keep it up. The more you learn the better your choice.

My pionus is much, MUCH quieter than even my cockatiel, unless she alarm calls. But it's not LOUD, like even conure loud. She has a voice, but its mostly mumbling. Some conures are LOUD, like obnoxiously so. I class Green Cheeks as borderline. They have a loud voice, but don't over use it. Usually, anyways. I only ever had one complaint about my birds in 25 yrs, and that was from a neighbor who held parties every weekend in his apartment till 2 am. I don't know how much his opinion counts, LOL!!
