So itā€™s been a little over two weeks since Kiwiā€™s toe was bitten and sheā€™s continued to improve. There is still some swelling (no redness) and she still favors that foot, but I donā€™t think she is any active pain, just discomfort. She took a shower with me tonight and that softened up the scabbing so I was able to get a better idea of whatā€™s going on. And I was right, about half of her nail is detached and I imagine any pain/discomfort is from the nail getting tugged/moved. She let me move it around with little to no fuss and Iā€™ve seen no signs of infection.
Hereā€™s a picture I took while looking:

I put some more Super Clot on it (like Iā€™ve been doing every day since she got bit) to disinfect (made sure to move the nail so some could get under), and now I just want to know what to do. Moneyā€™s still tight until after we move, but at the moment thatā€™s not going to happen until at least February. Should I leave it and let her decide whether or not to remove the nail? Should I try to remove the nail myself? Should I clip a majority of whatā€™s left of the nail (and make sure to use Super Clot for the bleeding) to help with the discomfort so itā€™s less likely to get tugged on? Any advice is helpful.

The nail will likely fall off itself as it heals. One of my budgies. Tiki, injured one of his back facing toes several months ago. I suspect it was bitten by another one of my budgies b

Oops. Back to Tiki's injured toe. Probably bitten. Tiki avoided putting pressure on the injured foot while continuing to fly around and play. It was swollen and red and I tried to get him in to see our avian vet but there were no appointments available and no other avian vets. Over the next few days his toe turned black and fell off! I know it sounds awful but as soon as the dead toe fell off Tiki was fine. He now has three toes on one foot and is a happy healthy very active little budgie.

Thank you so much! šŸ„°

Here some info on repeated use of super clot. You may be making things worse. Super clot is not intended for repeated use.
Try diluted betadine instead.

Repeated use of "Super Clot," a veterinary topical hemostatic agent designed to rapidly stop bleeding, should generally be avoided unless directed by a veterinarian as excessive application can potentially irritate the skin, cause localized tissue damage, and may not be necessary for minor wounds that naturally clot on their own.

Key points about repeated Super Clot use:
  • Consult your vet:
Always consult your veterinarian before using Super Clot repeatedly, especially on large wounds or sensitive areas, to ensure it's the appropriate treatment and to discuss proper application techniques.
    • Skin irritation: Frequent application can irritate the surrounding skin due to the active ingredients like aluminum sulfate and ferric sulfate.

    • Tissue damage: Overuse can potentially damage the underlying tissues, hindering the natural healing process.

    • Delayed healing: In some cases, excessive clotting agents can interfere with proper wound healing.

Should I clip a majority of whatā€™s left of the nail
I would trim the sharp point off the nail like you normally would with a nail trimming to cut down on the chances of it snagging on something.
I wouldnt try to cut off the entire nail. It may bleed badly. Your super clot is not a miracle cure.
