Hello back guys!
As you might know I’ve been pretty active in the forum since I got Mambo my BFA. I thought that it would be a good idea to make a thread where I can explain how Mambo goes, the new things he does, etc...

First of all a little introduction for the people who don’t know me.
I’m Jose, currently living in Belgium, got some birds and recently got a BFA who’s almost 5 months old. He’s (Mambo) been handfed but not tamed so he stills a bit “wild”, but day after day we can see the huge progress that he’s making!

So for the first day I wanted to explain how intelligent he is.

This morning I was working and Mambo was around me. The door of his cage was closed (I usually leave it open and he goes to drink when he needs) by mistake and he was thirsty. He went flying to the tap and tried to open it, I didn’t understand it so I just took him back near me. 2-3 minutes later he flew again and went near a water bottle and tried to open it.. it’s there that I realised that he was thirsty and he was trying to tell me.
I was shocked to see how intelligent it is to tell me that he’s thirsty!!

Another thing, 2 or 3 days ago. I finished having dinner so I was going to arrange all the dishes and after that prepare Mambo his pellets (mixed with water cause he didn’t like pellets) as usual. If you read my posts I already explained that I think in the store they didn’t really get him weaned, and he stills eating like a baby. So well, I usually give him that “paste” with a spoon because it’s easier for him.
Suddenly Mambo flew to me with a little spoon (that I had used for my dessert) in his foot. I guess he wanted to tell me he was hungry, so I hurried to make him his food and he finished it ALL!
I was so happy, first of all to see that he tried to be good with me, because he bites, and secondly to see how he tried to communicate with me.

Another thing that happened is: every time he bites me I leave him on the table and go to a room next to where he is, he usually flies and screams. Looks like now he know that 5 minutes later I’m going to come back, so he doesn’t even scream or fly. I think that this is bad..
He doesn’t bite as the first days, but he stills biting, and stills hurting.. (not blood though).
But overall I think that as it’s just about 3 weeks I have him he stills not really used to me.. I will give him time!

I am thinking in more things that happened but right now nothing comes to my mind.. I will write again soon and tell you about his “stories”!!

See you soon, in this same post!

By the way! I will post also pictures of him in my other posts!

Mambo sounds like a brilliant little guy?
Can he read? If so, don't let him read the Rickeybird's thread.
That spoon bit is impressive.

I love that you started this thread. It's wonderful to hear happy stories and antics!! Yes they are so very smart, when I try and tell non bird people they look at you like ya right lol. So it's good you can share with us parrot aholics !! He does sound super smart and super motivated to get you trained asap ;)

Today I’m going to ask instead of telling.
I’ve remarked that Mambo bites me (a lot) but he never makes me bleed (anymore).

Today he was biting my finger and putting each time a bit more pressure. There was a moment it hurt me so I left the room.

Do parrots “test” us? I mean, do you think he was trying how strong he can bite me??

Nothing interesting happened apart of that.. I showered him, I’m not really sure if he likes or if his scared..
I never dry him, I just leave him get dry alone. When it’s hot I open the window and he’s in his cage in the sun, but today it is cold so I just didn’t open the window and there’s not much sun.

Should I blow dry him or leave him like that? I don’t want him to get a cold so I don’t know what to do. I read a lot of times that blow drying is bad, but a lot of other times I saw people doing it.. so well what should I do??

I’ll keep you up with more things soon!

I have his new cage by the way! (Well half), they still have to send me another package... but it FINALLY came!! I hope he will like it and won’t be scared or anything !

See you soon!

Jose :)

DO NOT BLOW DRY HIM. They hair dryer could have Teflon and kill him. The people who do blow dry their birds make sure the blow dryer is Teflon free and still I'm scared to do it even then. Just let him air dry...as long as your house isn't cold he'll be fine.

It’s what I thought, thanks !

I used to blowdry my first CAG - cold/luke warm setting of course.
He absolutely loved it.

but- that was in the stone age before they even had teflon ;)

I have been blow drying my BFA for 30 years. He loves it. After his bath, I wrap him in a towel and he stays that way for a while. Looks like a green sausage LOL. Then, he goes onto his playstand and I blow dry him on low for about 10 minutes in short bursts. He loves that too. Tries to bite the air and sings and whistles. Then, he grooms and preens until he is dry. Then, it is nap time. I have been using the same blowdryer the whole time, so I guess it is safe!

Mambo finally has his new house!!
I finally received and assembled the cage.
To be honest is way bigger than I thought lol, but well better for him I guess.

I will have to buy some toys and perches for him to entertain.
He loves it, he went inside perfectly and he was not scared or stressed AT ALL ( he’s actually never scared or stressed ).
It’s 21:30 in Belgium and it’s 1h and a half past bed time, but he wanted to explore and explore. I finally left the room and I still hearing him exploring lol, but well...
He has a new bed by the way, I bought one of those ropes and looks like he likes it a loooot more than his old bed (a wooden perch).
I’m going to add a picture so you can see the cage, it’s actually huge, a macaw would fit in it LOL. I suppose he will be okay and that it won’t be too big, if not I’ll have to get another!

This is it!
Apart of that nothing happened today.. a friend came over, Mambo didn’t like him, he bit him haha.
And regarding his agressivity, he’s really better with me.. I mean.. he stills biting me everyday, but instead of biting me 50 times a day he just does once or twice! It’s already a good step I guess.

Good night ! See you tomorrow

Jose :)

He is a beauty! I used to have a macaw cage for Sam. It wore out, so I got a smaller one. He liked that one too. That one also wore out - so now he has a new SS cage from Preview Hendryx. They make really good cages. I got a great price from Wayfair with free shipping. Love it. Hope it doesn't wear out too!

That is a great cage!

Glad Mambo liked it right away :)
and wonderfull he is biting you less and less - great work you!!

Hi back!
I’m posting everyday LOL

Well today I wanted to talk about the behaviour of Mambo. Yesterday I said that he was so much better, well I spoke to fast.. today he is EXTREMELY aggressive he bit me like 10 times, he’s been growling the whole day, he would just be chilling on my hand and suddenly become crazy and bite me.. he actually becomes crazy a lot of times I don’t really know why, he moves the head everywhere and his eyes pin.

I still doing that technique that someone told me, so when he bites I leave him on his perch or wherever and I walk away.
In the beginning he was flying everywhere searching for me, but now he doesn’t even cry :/ I think he likes it when I leave lol.

Well it’s a short post but I wanted to explain this, and I’m open to suggestions!!

By the way, he LOVES his new cage, he stayed half day on the top of it!

Jose :)

new = scary, even when it is a good new,
I am not surprised he takes his excitement out on you: you are known and safe.

He will calm down again.

Hi guys,
I’m a bit concerned and I don’t really understand it so good.

When mambo came home, the 2 first days he was weighing+/- 330-325gr, I actually don’t know if before or after eating..
but now for 2 weeks he is down to 315gr.
I don’t know if it is because I weight him in the morning or it’s because he lost weight.. he doesn’t eat sunflower seeds anymore, he just has them as treats, but he stills eating veggies and pellets everyday. So I don’t really see a reason for this loss of weight.

And is 315gr good for a BFA?? Maybe it’s just because he’s 5 months old and he has to grow?

I don’t know much about Amazons :/

No one has an answer? :/

By the way I’m going to attach a picture. My parrot tries to escape the cage all the time and he ruins his feathers.. any idea on how to stop this??
