Stupid things People have said?

Excuse me, but there is nothing stupid about "parakeets" aka Budgies, or saying that someone used to have one! Please apologize to my beloved Rocky BalBirden! His feelings are hurt!
What's unfortunate is that here in the US Budgies are called "parakeets". If I tell the average person here that I have a Budgie they have no idea what I'm talking about. We have to be understanding about this word usage problem here before we get frustrated with people who don't understand what "parakeet" refers to in the UK and much of the of the world.

When I first got my Amazon, Primor one of my colleagues said, " aren't birds just rats with wings"

I was thinking, WOW! you teach in a supposed institution of higher learning...?

We have a ton of seagulls on campus cause we are right on the water.
He must have heard someone say that about the seagulls, which I think is still ignorant.

Yeah, that's not the first time I've seen someone calling an African grey a pigeon.

I had to do it to my mom despite she seems to know some basics (but also she has a habit of creating joke-names when she doesn't know)

CAG - African grey parrot but don't ask which one
Scarlet macaw- macaw... blu.... not it isn't blue and gold. But macaw for sure.
GWM - you know, I don't know. Macaw... let's call it blue-winged
Hyacinth macaw - hyacinth macaw
sun conure - umm..... sun conure
peach fronted conure - uhh... olive something...
rainbow lorikeet - coconut lorikeet (note: in Polish T. moluccanus after the separation got a new name, so that's why she made this mistake... if to consider the old classification, she didn't)
Dusky lory - I don't know for sure. African conure
Red lory - how pretty, beautiful
peach-faced lovebird - It's cool. Some sort of mniszka (in general "mniszka" means "munia" but I guess she though about Quaker parrots)
masked lovebird - uhh...cataract... err..... I forgot it

Was
A
Kookaburra.

When I saw this thread being updated, it reminded me one funny question I had few weeks ago...

Imagine that someone wrote a DM to me....

"I wonder how you look like in your scarlet macaw form"

Considering how I know that person, I understood what they meant... but out of context it looked funny

"I didn't know birds could get sick"
-some random person I talked to about my sick birds 🙃

"I don't get why you spend so much money on something that's gonna die in a year anyway"
-too many people (usually older family member)

"Well at least he's happy, it's not good for birds to live in cages anyway"
-Someone after I told them my bird flew away

These are a few I can think of at the top of my head 🫠 people can be so stupid sometimes

When we went over to my relative's house, and my younger sister saw their bird cage, she asked, why does your bird cage not have as many toys as my bird cage? They told her I was exaggerating about the amount of toys and perches a parrot needs and that they don't need all the toys that I put in my parrot cage!!!
I've heard this many times, unfortunately :(

That last one sucks. I'm sorry that happened to you.

You won't believe the amount of people who don't know the difference between a cockatiel and a cockatoo. 'Yeah, I had a cockatiel. He was a big white one with a crest. **Person makes motions to show the size of a bird the size of a n umbrella 'too** Screamed real loud, too' ... this Said while looking at my cockatiels. **headdesks**

Yeah I've had people look at Pippen and ask, "Is that a cockatiel or a cockatoo??" Then I have to explain the difference and then they forget by the time I see them again 😭

Recently my grandmas when they visited me on Easter:

"Only males sing, females are silent"
It looks like she didn't hear Angela...

"He's sharping his teeth or something" - my second grandma about Zenek... Birds don't have teeth...

Oh my gosh WHAT. IVE GOTTEN THAT TOO.

And then someone proceeded to ask me how I keep their teeth clean !!

I thought this would make a nice thread. Share anything stupid a non bird owner has said to you.
I’ve gotten…well, where do I even start? Here are some of them:
-“Nice parakeet” and “cool toucan” (about my zon)
-“Stop keeping them in cages” (while the birds literally fly around my entire house)
-“Why do you feed veggies, I thought those could kill them?”
-“What’s the difference between a macaw and parakeet?”
-“I think your bird is injured. What are those sticking out of its head?” (pin feathers)
-“Can you put a blanket on the cage or something? He’s SO LOUD”
Have fun, I’d love to hear what you have to say.
someone said to my friend, "Nice! Is that a chicken in there?" (my friend has a Quaker parrot!)

A random person on Discord:
- Should I get a Spix's macaw
Someone: Good luck in getting one (it was sarcasm)
- Then I will get a chick

(they said something more, I just didn't wont to copy and paste everything)
I think it was a kid...
