Two days ago I posted mentioning that I'd trimmed Salsa's upper beak for the second time since he's been with me. Yesterday I decided to smooth the edges of the trim with my Dremel tool. Well, Sals did NOT approve! As it turns out, he's afraid of the Dremel near his beak, and he let me know about that in no uncertain terms :11:;).

Directly below is a photo showing the minor thumb trauma that Sals imposed upon me. As you can see, it bruised the nail bed a bit - it's not bad at all but the bruise is actually darker and looks a bit worse than it does in that snap. Then below that photo are a couple of snaps of Salsa sporting his new beak trim (with rough edges which he'll smooth out himself soon enough :D).

ok....now its MY turn to LOL!!!!!:D

Obviously I can relate though unfortunately....

Ouch :( I cannot even imagine what the pain is like being bitten by a Macaw:11: It hurts enough, when an Amazon bites and their beaks are pretty small in comparison

Actually, in my experience bites from smaller parrots hurt worse than those from larger ones. But I'd compare the way my thumb felt right after Sals made his point, to either getting it slammed in a car door or accidentally pounding it with a hammer . I can still even feel a bit of dull pain today in fact.

Agreed, Kalani's beak is so damn sharp it will penetrate the skin instantly, whereas the GW's are like a pair of pliers (really strong ones) clamping down.

  OUCH!!! My thumb starts hurting by just looking at that picture. Is it throbbing???

Aaaw, poor Salsa didn't like the dremel. :(

No, it's not thobbing. It's really not bad at all considering that if Sals genuinely wanted to he could have severed my thumb tip clean off !

yeah, I think I've acertained that fairly well at this juncture ;)

Oh boy...my conure did something like that to me...bit right into the cuticle, kinda like yours.

Hope that heals soon... Poor you and Salsa. Scary Dremels... Haha.

I absolutely love Macaws, but I also have a great fear of them:(

Their large beaks worry me tremendously! The pain you are describing sounds quite bad :(

Codie bit me a few Weeks ago now and I was left with a large black bruise on my Arm, but I have a feeling it was not quite as bad as your bite from Salsa :)

Wendy, then I won't tell you that ReaRea's favorite thing to do after I let her on my shoulder for the 1st time each day is reach down and repeatedly "munch" on my collarbone. :54:

She's never broke skin or left a mark doing it, but it WILL get your attention!!! ;) Its her way of saying "You took too long".:54:

All I have to do is grab her beak and tell her to stop and she does. :30:

OMG WR, I am sitting here shuddering at the thought of ReaRea on your shoulder :11:

I am thinking, maybe I need to spend some time with a Macaw to overcome my fear of them:)

ReaRea is the nicest, gentlest, cuddliest bird in the flock.....Like I said, its her way of telling me I took too long to get her. :)

Nope, Miri has clamped down on me though, but didn't break skin, but I don't exactly sit there either. She knows what "No" means and I can grab a beak pretty dang fast if I have to!! LOL

Like Plax said, you know it could of been much worse, those beaks are STRONG!!! I've seen them bite thru steel wire in the blink of an eye.

I know you were talking to the blonde Wendy (ROFLMAO)...oh wait, I'm blonde, too....

Hey Wharf...I would never have that problem with the collar bone. I've got "too much meat" on me. :30:

FWIW, Wendy, Zaffer has never bitten me (or even pinched me) during the nearly 8 years he's lived with me. And he spends a great deal of time each day on my shoulder, or snuggling against me while on my arm, or stretched out on my chest when I'm laying back relaxing. I trust Zaf completely!

I get bit more by those ^&*( Zons than I do the GWs

This is the wire I'm using right now for "cage repairs".
(In other words, when Rea and Miri break something)

It takes one quick bite from one of the GW's to snap it in no time at all. I put the phone and finger in there for a size reference.

Thats why I asked you the other day if Hys have a better temperament than other Macaws! I absolutely adore Hys and love watching your Vids of Zaff :)

If I ever win the lottery then I am pretty sure I would be investing in one:)
