For those of us on this forum who live in parts of the USA where we have an autumn time change, how do your birds handle it? There’s always a little adjusting for all my animals but usually it’s not too bad. This year, though, my Quaker, JJ is NOT liking “ falling behind!” He has been crabby with a capital “C” for the past few days! Mr. Grumpy from sun up to sun down since Sunday 😅. I’m considering letting the birds go back to sleeping and waking on a natural light schedule even if that means they go to bed around five pm. Is it okay for them to get close to 13/14 hours of sleep time? How do your birds adjust to the change?

It affects me much more than the flock.

My birds are on a natural day/night cycle.
When it starts getting light they wake up and start the day.

Biggest change is in the afternoon.
Shorter day = less sunlight and less time out of cage.
Even with artificial light my birds tend to fly…….
I don’t have a good descriptive word.
Erratic, fly faster with something like desperation if I let them out too late in the evening.
Because of the time change I sometimes forget to let (mostly the twins) out early enough.
They are good at reminding me.

My conure has been grouchy as well. The sun starts to go down around 5:40 where I live. By 6 o clock my sunconure goes into his cage all by himself and wants to go to sleep. Usually 6/7 is his afternoon training time but all he wants to do is go to bed! I have adjusted his schedule based on the sunrise/sunset. Hopefully he adjust well. Sorry I couldn’t give you much advice. I’m on the same boat :(

My guys seem to be confused by the change of light and hours, so I feed them a little bit later until they adjust to the time change. Light-wise - they know when all the lights go out, it's sleep time. I don't even have to cover their cage as long as I'm not watching videos (the computer and bed are currently in the bird room. Long story.). They follow the change of the seasonal sun and are asleep earlier and wake later.

What Tex said.
The Rb gets up with the sun and goes to sleep when it sets.
He has his own room so that's easy.

All of my parrots go to bed at sundown, and rise with the sun. If I keep them up too late they start getting 🤬😡🤬😡. They just get really fussy.

Now they go to bed around 7pm instead of 8. I assume they wake up earlier but I’m not awake when they are.

Pickle has been grouchy too. It seems like he is starting to get used to it though.

Yeah, now that I’m back to letting JJ sleep and rise with the sun he’s much happier! The budgies don’t seem to care either way; they’re pretty easy going, fortunately!
