RIP Kiwi~ Pacific Parrotlet
Just heartbroken here. I have a 12 year old Pacific Parrotlet named Kiwi. Last spring, after a severe seisure, I took her to an emergency vet and then an avian vet. They thought she has some sort of infection, had her spend two nights there and sent her home with antibiotic injections. Bill was over $700. Ouch. Though she perked up, she continued to have seisures. I took her back to the vet once more, but after spending that much money, I could not afford the blood work to diagnose. The vet was also wary of taking blood from such a tiny bird...was afraid the stress would harm her.

Anyway...6 months later, and Kiwi still has seisures. She has also since gone blind. Since yesterday morning, she has basically had one continuous seisure. She cannot walk, as her feet are tightly clenched. I made an appointment with my dog's vet (not an avian vet) to euthanize her in an hour, as I just don't want her to suffer and I think that her quality of life is not good with these seisures and now blindness.

Of course now when I pick her up to cuddle before taking her to be euthanized , she perked up, ate seed that I offered, twisted her head around so I could scratch that special spot. I feel terrible now, and I don't know if I am making the right decision. She is still not walking, as her feet are clenched tight, blind as a bat, has terrible seisures.

I guess I just need reassurance that it is ok to let her go :(

I know it's a terribly hard decision to have to make. From what you describe, I believe you are doing what's best for your friend. It's a very loving thing to be able to ease our cherished pets suffering. My thoughts are with you, hugs!

Oh no that is never an easy decision.
Yes being that her quality of life is so seriously impacted. The blindness and constant seizures; I too would make the same conclusion to do whats in the pets best interests rather than prolonging the inevitable. I'm so sorry, I know you are sick with dread.
My thoughts are with you.

When one of my bird had the same issue years ago. I placed her in a heated tank. When she couldn't eat, I handfed her and she did accept. I kept her warm and kept feeding her and she eventually recovered but still have a little issue. Her head twitches a bit and then I placed her in a cage once again since she started eating on her own again. She was able to get around just fine. She was happy being around other birds again at that time.

So it is something for you to decide on what is the best solution for you to do!

As hard as it is, just remember that she will be a happy seeing flying bird up in heaven.

I wish we could make this kind of humane decision for people we love and just don't have a quality of life any longer...but we can't. I am grateful that we are able to we the pets that we love and don't want to see suffering.

You are doing the right thing.....

Thank you for your kind and reassuring words. My Kiwi bird is gone now :(

I'm so sorry you lost your Kiwi, but you made the right decision - albeit a very difficult one. Its not common for birds to have seizures for no reason. It sounds as though it was more than likely a brain tumor (which unfortunately is not fixable no matter how much money you have). My heart goes out to you, its not an easy thing to do.

i am so sorry you had to make that choice! but with all honesty if my nut was having seizures like the way poor kiwi was, i'd have made same choice

I'm so sorry that your Kiwi is gone. I would have done the same thing as you.

Sorry to hear, I lost my ten-year old parrotlet last year suddenly and they are such cute, spunky birds. Being so immobile (and blind) is not a quality of life for them. Very difficult decision to make, but you did the right thing. Doesn't make it any less tough but she is no longer suffering. My heart goes out to you :(

Thank you all :)

I had to share one VERY strange thing...

I have two large unruly retrievers that I walk every morning. This morning as we were strolling along, my boy lunged at what I thought was a fluttering piece of trash. I watched it finally settle into the street and then realized it was a parakeet! There was a man working on the street, and he caught it and gave it to me. I carried it about a mile home with it biting me the entire way. lol
I have called the local animal shelter, and I will put an ad in the paper and on craigslist.
To be honest, I hope it's not claimed. So strange that I lost one bird, and the next day another flies into my life.

Here's a pic of the unnamed budgie. It's very cute, yet very dirty and is missing most of its tail feathers, and whoever clipped its wings just butchered them :(

Awwww! Thank you for taking the poor little bird in. I'm with you, kinda hoping he/she won't be claimed. A new bird did literally fly into your life!

When you write the ad, don't put a description of the bird. That way, if the real owner is out there, they can identify the bird.

Agreed with Rio's Mom. What a cute little fella. He looks like he could use a loving home. Sorry for your loss of Kiwi, I imagine that's so hard to deal with, but I'm sure you made the right decision by your baby.

Look at those horrid wings! He reminds me of my Brucey boy, Wouldn't have bothered with advertisements, that boy hasn't had a good home by the looks of things!

Aww I am so sorry. You have me crying right now. It is never easy to make a decision like that even when you know deep in your heart that it is the right thing to do. It hurts us even more to watch our beloved babies experience something so tragic. You keep that little parakeet. You need each other. I had a similar situation happen to me some years back. I had to make the decision to but my childhood dog down. I was 22 and she had been my best friend since I was 7 years old. I was heartbroken. Two days later in the middle of the freezing winter and starving kitty showed up on my doorstep. He needed me as much as I needed him. I call him my fur angel and 7 years later he is the most wonderful guy:) These things happen for a reason :)

Yep I think you should keep too if you can cause he needs you and you need him and he was heaven sent .LOL !!!!
