New White Fronted Amazon Owner

Wow Biggs is picking new tricks as fast as Salty, maybe faster. We might have a new head of class on the Parrot Board University. You're so encouraging to him.

Thanks wrench13 Mr Biggles has a while to go yet before he catches up to Salty but one things for sure Amazons Rule when it comes to intelligence...They are really smart :)

I rally get a charge listening and watching the videos. The Irish accent when you are coaxing Biggs is so cool. I'm a bit of a Scotophile, so Irish is not far off. Salty hasn't gotten the hang of basketball yet. He tends to just throw the ball where ever , flinging like his food.

Hee hee thanks wrench13 :) Salty probably likes to see you having to chase after the ball after he flings it LoL:) Mr Biggles sometimes does that to me too :)

Mr Biggles is going to snack on a slice of apple after working hard at his basket ball training session this morning and here he is waving bye bye just before he goes to dine :)

Ahem, what was I saying? Oh yes - treats - what are you using for reward for Mr. Biggles, besides that sweet Irish voice?

Hes a player alright as long as Im not trying to give him scratches he loves pleasing me or perhaps I should say he loves pleasing the hand that brings him the treat but he enjoys the games too and Ive seen him take a ball on his own and put it in the net while perched on his perch when he thought I wasnt watching him from the other room. Hes a real character :)

Hee hee maybe its my irish accent alone that charmd him LoL ...I often use a peanut sliced up into little pieces that do a whole session but now and again I give him a sunflower seed and that is what he got here at the end of the session. Mr Biggles unlike your Salty is not in to pine nuts I wish he was...Ive tried him on pine nuts almonds and pistachio too aswell as pecan and pumkin but he just spits them out ...in fact he spits out human grade peanuts too and he would die for a peanut and the other nuts I can only get in the heslth food store...what I get isnt salted or roasted I dont know why he wont eat them but they must be treated in some manner that he doesnt like...what I buy are supposed to be untreated human grade nuts yet neither of my parrots will eat them....cant wait to see Salty waving back at us :)

That is so sweet.

Thanks Christine that was actually the first time he did it so slowly and actually waved the toes once ...I was so glad I had captured that on video...before that his wave was a quick up and down if you blinked youd miss it :)

Well today we tried what I thought would be a simple trick to learn and it proved the most difficult as I had to find a spot high enough to hold the treat so he would follow it and at the same time not so high that he viewed my hand as a preditor so after a while he kind of got the idea...I imagine teaching this would be easier on the floor or on a table top but Mr Biggles is not yet comfortable on a table top and he feels very vulnerable on the floor so I train him on his favourite perch...he has more confidence there and if I make a mistake it doesnt affect him as much there cos he bounces back faster... anyway after a lesson that didnt seem to be teaching him or have him teach me how to hold the treat correctly we finally got a beautiful 360 ° spin :)

Google touch training it's easier for things like spinning as you use a stick instead of luring with a treat [emoji3]

Thanks for the tip Nicky 76 ...I will indeed google it :)

Okay I googled the touch training for spinning...we have done a little touch training with a popsicle stick but Mr Biggles and I got bored of it once we started to play basketball. However now I remeber why I stopped it...Mr Biggles doesnt like a stick near his head or anywhere in his sight at that level...you can see him get uncomfortable with it...sort of grow to tolerate it but is never happy with it...Mr Biggles was beaten out of his cage with two sticks in front of me by the guy who sold him to me...I tried to stop it being done but I was told that was what he was used of...I doubt in Mr Biggles case if touch training will work for the spin trick where he needs to see the target stick up at head and eye level...its like he views it as a preditor...it took ages to get him to hop up on a branch coming upward towards his chest without him recoiling in fear or standing backwards in a fearful pose...now he hops on a perch so maybe with time he will also accept a target stick without being afraid of it...he does accept it at the present moment as long as it doesnt come up above a certain level in height. Anyone have any ideas on how to get him over his fear of sticks...he has done well I suppose accepting the branch to step up onto without fear so maybe Im moving too fast with the height the stick rises to or should I scrap trying to get him to accept a stick at the height it scares him at? Anyway eventually I found this guy who uses the target stick from below the perch so will try this today but I would still like any ideas on how to help Mr Biggles get over his fear of sticks...the only thing he will accept for target training is a green popsicle stick...change it to a wooden stick and Mr Biggles recoils in fear
This is the target touch video I found with the spin or turn around trick on it

I'd just use a Popsicle stick if that's what he's comfortable with. Or you can use the wooden stick but take it slowly treat him just for letting it near him and then take it away. Keep going like that and you'll be able to get it closer and closer until he accepts it's not a threat.
It's worth a try [emoji4]

You're doing fine with mr. Biggs. Only suggestion is to always use a hand signal along with the same verbal command. So you say spin, i say Circle but the same result happens. I make a little circle with my hand and say Circle. after a while you will only need to give the hand signal.
try to come up with a unique hand signal for each trick.

Thanks wrench 13 I did the hand signal with the wave and he got that really fast...obviously that was easy (for me I mean) as I didnt have to think about it as you naturally wave when you want him to wave back so it came naturally and instead of learning from that experience and giving him a signal for the circle too I failed miserably and expected him to know what I was talking about...I think I need the training more than Mr Biggles as to his credit he eventually figured out what I was asking him to do...but you are right wrench 13 as the hand signal is so important and makes complete sense to me (now I have thought about it) because he is watching my every move to see what Im saying and the signal means way more to him than a word ...birds are first and foremost observers arent they? ....Thanks

Sadly I didnt have the camera to hand for this and anyway the angle I was viewing it at wasnt the best for a video but I was in the next room ( there is a glass panel in the door) and I decided to check on Mr Biggles because I could hear him talking Zon to himself and I couldnt believe my eyes when I sneaked a peak for here he was obviously giving himself commands or encouragement in Zon but doing perfect spin turns and then a wave followed by a trip to his bowl for a treat LoL looks like Mr Biggles has graduated and is now training himself and Im not needed anymore...I went back to washing my dishes with a Great Big smile on my face :)
