I gave this to my parrot yesterday. He spent 3 hours last night trying to get to these nuts, and then another 2 hours this morning. He was successful at getting to the nuts eventually. He wasn’t exactly happy at times and started shaking the entire cage the nuts are in. However he was fully entertained 🥰

Okay, that's awesome. Money well spent. Nuff said. :)

Was this your ekkie? I haven't tried to give Piccolo whole nuts before.... I will rush to get one of these toys if it kept yours busy....

No, this was my Macaw. My Ekkie unfortunately wouldn’t be able to break open those nuts. My Ekkie can get sun flower seeds open.

This is what I make for my Ekkie. It’s a soft toy that he can destroy.

I am up, and at it again being the evil parront… I bought this puzzle toy online. I put one of his favorite treats (peacans) in the middle of the toy with the shell & all. He spends hours figuring out these puzzles. I have a very quiet house for a little bit. Then he figures out the puzzle, and that’s when it takes him 2 minutes to figure out how to get the treats out instead of hours. My house is loud again. What can one do?

has anyone else came across toys that are puzzles that can help my macaw keep busy? Once he figures it out I have to remove them, swap them out, and reintroduce to keep things challenging. I need a few new puzzle toys to put in rotation.

Wow! I would be a very BAD BIRD if I were your parrot! I would get so frustrated and angry with that toy that I would bite anyone who got near me! Trust me, I'm not an impatient person at all, but if someone made me do something like that to get my favorite food if I was hungry I would never speak to them again!
I have a new found respect for parrots. 😅😂🤣

I wouldn’t like me if I were a parrot either. What’s worse is whoever designed these contraptions called toys. Someone is more evil than me. It makes me feel a little better.

My macaw would rather starve than struggle to get a nut out of one of those contraptions. BTDT. He knows that eventually I will relent and hand him a nut just because he is sweet. 🥴 The most foraging my bird does is digging in my salad for a sauced up piece of cucumber or bell pepper.

Sounds like my Ekkie! I can’t get him to consistently play with any toy. He’d rather not exercise, and say he did. When I introduced him to “healthy” pellets, and chop he expressed his opinion on the situation. I can affirm he wasn’t a fan of these changes. He liked his almond slivers that weren’t shelled. Because I am an evil parront I started serving them up shelled just cracking them a hair to force him to forge. He’s not very happy with me.

My macaw enjoys puzzles (treat incentives) but doesn’t destroy toys like I thought he would. He doesn’t chew through wood unless it’s a perch, or stand. He chews right through those while he’s standing on them. Then screams when they break as he gets startled.

My conures are chainsaws on legs. They are the destroyers of wood. They’d like to challenge beavers to a contest.

My macaw has never been a fan of toys. He has a specific type of wooden block chew toy on a chain that he will eventually destroy (takes a couple of years). I buy multiples when they go on sale. He is stocked up for a good long while. He is a fan of leather strips. He loves to untie knots. I put them all through the chains of his toys and every day they are untied. He is a man of simple taste. 😂 Makes it very economical!

Whoever said a macaw can crunch right through a Brazil nut is nuts! 😂 I have a fancy super heavy duty nutcracker and it takes all my strength (and a bit of cursing) to crack those darn things! It is only when they have been pre-cracked by me that he will show any interest in them. I guess I have a very delicate bird. 🥴

BTW we still have the original manzanita perches that came with his SS cage. They are 35 years old and still hanging in there. Unlike your macaw, he respects his perches!

Yes, my macaw can crunch through any nut. Brazil nuts he enjoys just not as much as pecans or almonds. Which is great for me because if I had to crack them open with my hands it would hurt me more than the nut. No my macaw doesn’t respect perches. Here’s his celebratory dance after he ripped off a huge piece of wood from his stand. We’ve had to build one that we can replace the parts of easily. It’s so odd how birds of the same species can vary so much

Does your macaw not do stuff like this? I call this contraption the spinning wheel of death. He gets all of the treats out in minutes. He always goes for the almonds first. I’m out of ideas on how to challenge him.

I have a few English budgies that are such perch potatoes that they rarely come out of their cage even though I have a open door policy. They aren't scared, just lazy. I have three other English that love to come out and fly around. English budgies are known to be much more laid back than regular budgies but these three don't want to do anything but eat, sleep, preen, chirp and make a mess!

throw in mating with what your parrots like to do, and Nico my Ekkie is just like your budgies

My boy cheddar LOVES those cork like toys I made him one but it lasted less than 5 minutes

He just walked away once he fully destroyed the cork
