After losing Maude, our older blue budgie last night :( we were both kind of bummed, I was also a bit antsy since today marked day 19 since Daphne's clutch was laid and still no signs of pipping. Well, I checked the box for the first time today about 30 minutes ago, no signs of pipping, still no babies, not what I was hoping to see. Then, my other half gets home from work, I guess he didn't realize I had just checked on the eggs and he snuck a peek while over in our breeding room. Next thing I hear is, "We've got a baby!" I was sure he was just messing with me but I could tell the excitement in his voice was real. I just sat there and said, "are you sure, can't be! I just checked 20 minutes ago and I didn't even see the slightest crack in any of the eggs." Sure enough, I walk over to see this

I'm so excited! Not only because we have new babies but because we lost maude yesterday and then today her grand birdie decides to pop his little head out. (the father of these babies is Maude's son)

Oh, I'm so excited for you! And I'm sorry for your loss of Maude, but I bet it helps to see her grandbabies hatching.

Oh wow , congratulations IcyWolf !
How exciting for you :) Are you going to hand feed any of them ?
Love those tiny little peep sounds :)
I didnt pull my hens quick enough and i have two clutches hatching !
Both hens laid ten eggs each and i have had great luck with most if not all hatching , so I am definitely in for the long haul.
I have a friend who has a aviery and she is willing to take most of them , so I am grateful beyond belief for that , lolol.
I do have a few friends lined up for homes too :)

Enjoy your new hatchlings :)

Yay! I'm happy for you and so sorry about Maude.

I'm so sorry about Maude . It's so hard to loose them , but you do have his grand babies to welcome into the world :)
They may not fill the hole in your heart , but they will make new memories for you to cherish.
Fly free Maude

Thank you to everyone for the kind words and shared excitement. Maude and her mate Harold(still with us) were the oldest birds we had. I have no way of knowing how old they actually are because they went from a retirement home, to a nurse that worked there when their owners passed, then to a friend of mine, and then eventually to me. Harold seems to be in much better health than Maude was, but I suppose that is to be expected since prior to me bringing her home, she was allowed constant access to a nest box for at least two years and ate nothing but wild bird seed, so I'm sure her little body was quite drained. I actually just got her to start eating veggies in the past two months so I was pretty excited about that. I'm guessing that she had to have been at least 8 and with a lifetime of bad food and near constant egg production I suppose she lived a pretty long life for a budgie. I was worried that her mate might get lonely so he has a new room mate now, our other loner budgie, Barnaby, is now living with him. They lived together before so I figured it would give them both some company and they have been getting along great, they are sharing a perch as we speak). It's kind of ironic that it all happened this way if anyone has ever seen the movie "Harold and Maude".

@luvmytoo- ten eggs?! That's incredible! I thought this was a nice sized clutch with six(all fertile from what I could tell). I will be pulling them at around 14 days to hand feed and I have a guaranteed home for at least one, and I have many others that have contacted me about them, I'm just waiting to see how many actually hatch and survive(fingers crossed) before I actually commit anymore to anyone. It's pretty cool, the man that has one reserved is actually a magician and wants a hand fed baby so he can train it to use in his magic show! After I posted the picture his response was "I am a dad!" so I'm sure he/she will have a great home. And I'm excited at the possibility of being able to see one of our babies perform!

Ugh, I just want to look at him again, but I'm holding down my excitement and letting momma do her thing. When I saw him and took that pic, he literally just came out of that egg, I don't think he even stretched his neck out yet, in the picture he looks like, "Okay, I take it back, I wanna go back in the egg now!" as he's all curled up and sitting with the other eggs :09: This was today 19 for egg number one, so hopefully we will have more babies popping out in the next few days :)

luvmytoo, 10 eggs each?? Oh, my goodness! You will have your hands full!

I do have the daughter of my first horse, which I think helped me when mom passed. She doesn't look like her mother, but is very similar in personality. She looks like her daddy, who has also passed. So she is like having the best of both of them.

WOW a famous budgie !!! Now that's cool :)
Are you keeping any ? You never know , the sibling might want to get into show business too , and it can be a brother and sister magic duo :)

I plan on keeping one, our other budgies are terrified of people, they're getting better as far as fear goes but I don't think they would ever enjoy handling. I had to take barnaby out and do his nails a couple days ago and he sat on my hand for a little bit(he for some reason could never fly), but then he jumped off to the floor and made a run for it. So I think it would be nice to have one we can actual hold and love on :)

I have no idea if they are all fertile though.....I know I will be hand feeding some if more then 6 hatch , it's so much for the hen to feed ,usually some dont make it. I only breed when I want to have more budgies of my own or a few friends want chicks . But this time I got more then I bargained for :eek:

Ha ha ha ...I can just picture the little guy making a run for it :p
I think they have so much personality for such little ones :)
I love to hear their chirping , to me it sounds so pleasant.
What is a household without chirping or squawking etc.... :p

Exactly! I love budgie chatter, and it's funny because if the house is really quiet you can hear them from out in our living room and it sounds like we have a rainforest or something in the back of the house ;)

How old are your eggs? If they aren't too close to hatching you could always candle them.

I also had a budgie named Barnaby. He died while I was in college. You should definitely keep at least one because a tame budgie is a wonderful little pet.

When I was at the vet today they told me some lady was complaining about the chirps from the budgies. Here she had just gotten a 'Too. They said they laughed and said wait until your cockatoo screams!

Just wanted to add my congrats on the babies :) and of course sorry for your loss.

Oh yes , I know I can candle them , but I hate to upset my hen.
I probably should check , but I usually leave them alone now.
I dont like to take the chicks out until they have down covering them to hand feed. IMO , it doesnt make a big difference when you start , as long as its before they feather of course.
Have you ever noticed that the chicks take on many characteristics of the parents ? I really didnt think this was apparent in birds.
But one pair I have , the male is extremely flighty and so are his chicks . But the other one , both parents are very docile and the chicks are practically hand tame even when parent raised.
I thought that was quite interesting . I will see if it carries through to these clutches this year.

Get her phone number and info roxynoodle ! It wont be long before she wants to re home her Too because of his"parrot talk".
Really , all kidding aside , I would keep track of that person because if I could prevent the mistreatment this bird will soon experience just from being a parrot. Yes , they are noisy , they are birds , not stuffed animals I would like to tell this person ...
I dont mean to put you on the spot roxynoodle ,its just that I forsee problems with this person now if she complained about budgie chatter !!!
And i would hate for the Too to start plucking or screeching endlessly because of being ignored or covered or shut in a room alone. Or maybe it will at least be with the budgies
Oh someone just stop me now  but this person should not have birds

Oh a horse person , yay :) I wish I had a foal from my girl :(
Although she was very green broke and was like flying a kite then walking a horse , lolol. And riding was another challenge , but I wouldnt change a thing about her :) She died at 24 years old.

Roxy, my "foal" is almost 16 now, lol! She was going to be my future eventing horse, but she lost an eye when she was 4. It's quite a shame as she can jump like a dolphin. So she is a big, pooping pet, but I wouldn't give her up for the world. I feel like I'm the one who gave birth to her, lol!

I'm sure the vet will keep track of the 'Too, and I'm sure she did what she could to educate this woman. I really can't take a 'Too as I think I'd die from asthma. Merlin coming here has made me start saving for a quality air cleaner.
