The pictures are all SO beautiful, just like your Ruthie. :) I am going to take a guess here why she may have challenged you, and then turned around:
1. She could be a bit tired from a long night.
2. New home, new sounds, new sights - perhaps a bit unsure of it all still
3. Trying to find out WHAT she can get away with (even though I really doubt that one, since she's so laid back)

I bet you came home with a HUGE smile on your face, too. ;)

I think your assessment is totally correct. The video seems to show she is testing things out a bit. Sorry its so poor quality. I'm not quite sure what happened. BTW she is scratching the hell out of my skin there, almost making it raw. But I want to let her do her thing for a bit so I'm sucking it up.

Steve, you probably knew I was going to ask you sooner or later....can you PLEASE share a pic of your reef tank??? Pretty please...with Ruthie and Teka on top? :D

The ONLY reason we got a generator was because when I had my 180 gallon SPS tank, and we lost power, I was honestly driving my husband (and everyone else around me) INSANE.

Will this do?

Oh yeah...that'll do just FINE!!! AWESOME. Thank you!!! I can almost count the frags you could snip. ;)......but no...I'm ALL done with that. :(

Holy mackerel, Steve!!! Ruby is GINORMOUS!!! She's as big as a GW!

Don't be afraid to tell her "GENTLE". I see she's rubbing your hand pretty hard, but she keeps looking at you, almost as if to see if you approve. ;) If she gets too rough, the word GENTLE will come in REALLY handy. ;) Tony told me about that as soon as I got Ripley home...and it's worked wonders for me. :D (Ripley is still learning, of course, but he DOES know the word GENLTE now)

Oh, and if I'm not mistaken, Ruthie rubbing on you is Ruthie being affectionate. :D :D :D

Jenna just pointed out that is a horrible photo of the tank with the lighting on this camera. With a better camera it does look much better. But yes after several years I may be taking the tank down rather soon. All frags will be available :D.

All frags will be available :D.

I didn't read that. In fact, I utterly ignored that one. :54: I am SO sorry for hijacking your thread about GORGOUS Ruthie.

...now let me run downstairs..turn on my laptop...because I just want to show you one (or 2) pics of my tank (that once was)..... :54: :54:

She is pretty big. But she is also way too small. Her breast bone sticks way out. She is very bony everywhere. We somehow left the medical paperwork at the rescue and this just reminded me of that so we can get her weight. So we do have a bit of work to do there.

I really like the GENTLE suggestions. I will be trying that out.

OK we now have the CORRECT history and records from her old vet and last checkup.
Hatch date JAN 14 97, so she is actually 16 years old.
Lived in dog crate almost all her life.
Ate seeds ONLY until owner died in December.
Weight 1070g, low for such a large green wing hybrid.
Had an abnormal CBC but most recent one is normal.

Does anyone else with Ruby Macaw experience have an opinion on her weight?

I was wondering if you adopted Ruthie from Center for Avian Rehabilitation & Education? Today I sent in my application to look at 4 of their medium size parrots. With Valentino being the only parrot here we are looking to adopt one more parrot.

We have interest in 4 of the medium birds. It is our hope that after interacting with the 4 parrots one will choose us. I talked to Bobbie yesterday for over an hour and I really enjoyed our conversation. I was very happy to learn that they will adopt to Minnesota residences but will not ship. Road trip! That is if they approve of our application.

There is ZERO doubt in my mind that her weight will go up in your care in NO time at all. :)

Poor baby sat in a dog crate, that is SO hard to stomach. :(

I also wanted to tell you that you are WAY ahead with Ruthie. I have a hard time sitting down with Ripley to cuddle. He gets SO uncomfortable the moment I sit down ANYWHERE. Remember, he's been in a pet store all his life, and was hardly ever handled. BUT, I'm working on it with him - a little bit each and every day. Our "sitting" sessions have gone from under 1 minute to over 10 minutes now, without Ripley ending up on top of my head. ;)

Yeah, what she said! On all points.

I don't know who is more excited Jenna or Ruthie.... Jenna is so going to hate me for this :D.
We are approaching the 24 hour mark, just seeing how much we can get done in a day. LOL

Thanks Tony!

We just went to try and get some studying in and Ruthie has gone nuts (in a fun way and very quietly). She had just been sitting on the tree stand all day, moving every so often. Now she is RUNNING all over the darn thing. She will stop grab a hold of a branch real tight and flap the heck out of her wings shaking the whole thing. Then she will shred some wood blocks and start all over again. It's way funny. But she stops and looks at me every time I try to get a video. So I am going to let her do her thing.
She will sleep well tonight.

She's found her utopia and she wants to enjoy every minute of it :)

Congrats! I would love to own a bigger bird one day. But finances right now just won't allow it to happen. There was a macaw and cage for just $300 on Craigslist a while ago and I really wanted to jump for it. Guess I'll stick to my tiels and parakeets for now. Lol.
Enjoy her!

I totally get that. We really had to think about it for a while before we pulled the trigger.

The $300 for the bird and cage is a good price. But I'm sure its for a bird that you would need to do a whole lot of work with if your ready for that. Then take into account that we bought a small bag of the pellets that she was eating for $44, again that's for a small bag. Not to mention the $100 in nuts I have here, then the Nutriberries, Avicakes, fresh fruit and veggies. I haven't even gotten to toys yet. You were completely correct in your decision with finances. If your not sure if your ready then that means your not ready. I can tell, when you do take the step up you will be doing it right.

Yea, my moms friend has a double yellow head amazon. And I absolutely love him. But he is definetily a lot of work and you have to watch what you say around him. Lol
But I am determined to own one eventually. I've got a sulcata tortoise who will start taking a good chunk of my check when he gets some size on him. But I try to not bite off more than I can chew.

I just see these animals on Craigslist and want to take them in because I'm scared of the homes they may get. My sisters dog had puppies (there was a waiting list for about 2 months for the low cost spay/neuter and a stray jumped the fence. She didn't show that she was pregnant until 2 weeks before she delivered) anywho, and we found ones for all but one (which is now my 72 lbs horse lol) and asked all owners to keep in touch with how the puppies were and let us know when they were fixed. 2 of the owners just dropped off the face of the earth. :/

I am So~So happy for you & Jenna and of course for Ruthie!! She looks so gorgeous & happy.:D It sounds like Ruthie is very happy she chose ya'll, ummm I mean you chose her to join the flock.:red1:;)
