Parrots
1 BFA- Kiwi. Hatch circa 98', forever home with us Dec. 08'
So, in the wake of my disastrous wake up the morning, I decided to retreat to the kitchen and make my feathery friend something;) Kiwi certainly LOVES pizza, but can't really have more than a bit of crust, so I came up with a bird-friendly pizza. It was a BIG hit, so I thought I'd share my recipe with you all. I could be wrong, but I think many birds want nothing more than to be let loose on a pizza;)

Dough-

1 1/4 cup organic whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tbsp olive oil
1/3 + 2tbsp water

Sauce and toppings-

1 SMALL sweet potato
1/4cup FINELY chopped broccoli
2 finely crushed eggshells
Sprinkle of cheese (on top, optional)
Chopped veg. your bird likes as topping (optional)

Mix dough ingredients in mixing bowl and knead for about 2 minutes. Split into 3 equal portions and form 3 approximately 4" pizza crusts.
*Pre-bake crust for about 5 minutes before adding sauce and toppings.

Peel, chop and boil sweet potato until soft. Drain Sweet potato and transfer to bowl, mash. Add in finely chopped broccoli and eggshell. Mix evenly. Spread sauce evenly on crusts, then sprinkle a SMALL amount of cheese (if desired), and add any additional toppings, just like with a regular pizza. Bake for 15-20 minutes @ 400 degrees. Let cool, add a touch of fresh cracked pepper and serve to spoiled parrot(s). Pizzas can be frozen. If you have a REALLY spoiled bird, garnish each slice with a singe sunflower seed:D
*Makes (3) 4" deep-dish pizzas

(Forget the pizza, I'm stealing mommy's silver cake server!)

(I'll just ignore the neat little slice and eat the crap out of the whole thing)

That looks absolutly great!
It makes me hungry ,now i have to make them pizza while i order mine.
Sigh so much for easy food(yeah they have seen this tread already, can't fake ignorence now)

that looks like a really yummy quiche!!! Tho I can't have wheat anymore and the cheese can be a problem, but still, remember how yummy quiche was... sigh... okay, back to birdie pizza!! I think you should call it birdie quiche, really looks like a spinach or broccoli quiche... and you know only real men eat quiche!!!

With how you cook for him, how could he possibly favor your husband??? silly boy...

I hope I didn't get you in too much trouble with your flock hacatta:)

Jen- I always though quiche had egg filling (?) though, I have never really made or eaten quiche. I kinda thought you know, of the sweet potato as a tomato substitute and the broccoli as a onion/garlic substitute in pizza sauce, since birds shouldn't really have anything in traditional pizza sauce:) However, not offering a little cheese may well have started WWIII. Kiwi LOVES his cheese and since it's rich in calcium and doesn't seem to bother his tummy, I let him have a little on stuff;) And I don't know what it is about Joe, but Kiwi just adores him. It wouldn't matter if I gave Kiwi a whole human pizza, he would STILL love Joe more:mad:, the little turd.

Quiche is pretty much egg based with cheese... but my favorite always had spinach or broccoli in it.

But, unless your coloring is off in the pics, those little pizzas look like quiche! :) Or I am just really missing some of the foods I'm not allowed anymore...

I snorted!!! LOL!!!!

:32: WOW that looks SO yummy!!!! And your commentary cracked me up. :D Kiwi has a good sense of fine things (silver cake server), LOL.

And Jen, you should have never mentioned the Quiche because now I'm craving it, but am in no mood to bake more today (just finished birdy bread). :31:

make gluten free, lactose free quiche and I'll come over for dinner :) I know, I'm such a pain to feed... first thing I do when we go out to a restaurant is apologize to the server...

Lol I rarely if ever order anything on the menu without changing something

That looks amazing! One more thing to add to my birdie recipe book:)

WOW WOW WOW [Im imspired :)}

That looks so yummy!!! I'm thinking if I skip the egg shells, I could make that for the family too and then Percy can eat with us like he wants to. The poor dear always get banished to his cage at dinner time because he doesn't believe us that (a) certain foods are not good for him and (b) human-hot food will hurt him and (c) it is not okay to stand in the center of your human's plate and rotate around, picking out the bits you want while attacking and fork approaching the food....:54:

Great idea, April!

So, I just have to ask-

After seeing this post, how many people decided to order/make a pizza or quiche (I guess it looked more like one of those) for themselves vs. how many made them for the birds? lol. I know I made another pizza yesterday, of the human variety:D

I totally understand this! That is why Kiwi only joins us on his perch at the table and is NOT allowed to come down off his perch. He just LOVES stomping about in pasta, and about the last time he was allowed to be on the table during dinner without a perch is the night he decided he was going to use the bean dip like a mud bath, while my back was turned for only a minute. Do you know how hard it is to wash large amounts of refried beans off a bird? Not to mention the times he crawled in pasta. He was a real pest when allowed to be loose on the table. Parrots have such poor manners:(

Yay! I liked these photos too, more than most I take. I love product photography, especially photographing food (which is more difficult than one would think). Unfortunately, I'm a mediocre cook, and my dishes don't always come out looking picture perfect, so I don't often have the desire to photograph them. That, or I have a husband and parrot lurking outside the kitchen the minute something is done:20:. But both men had eaten their respective breakfasts at that point (weren't bothering me), and these came out so cute, I just couldn't resist;)

Once upon a time, I was actually set and ready to move to go to photography school in California after I graduated high school to become a professional photographer. I spent pretty much from the age 13/14 training with a family friend who was a photographer and had all the super nice equipment and learning all the right studio and field techniques. But, life took a different route and I met my hubby like a month before I graduated and decided to stay behind and get married instead;) I still do freelance jobs from time to time, and my camera might as well be permanently attached to me. Sorry if I got a little excited here, but I was really excited to mess around with these photos yesterday. I wish I had a whole birdie cookbook to shoot (with my adorable little model, of course!)

I love how Kiwi ignored the little slice in favor of the whole pizza. I'm totally gonna add this to my grocery shopping list. Lizzy goes nuts when we have pizza, but we don't like to give her more than one itty bitty slice of crust. Hopefully this will be an even better subsitute!
Thanks so much for sharing :D

I agree, thank you for sharing this recipe and photos. My birds will not see this until I pick up the ingredients to make them their own parrot pizza. It made me remember I haven't made quiche in way too long.
