Safira (B&G Macaw)~~ Gracie (CAG) ~ Lucy (CAG)
I want to put a clip on lamp on Gracie's cage with a full spectrem bulb. I may do this with all my birds, but I think the added light will help add a little more heat to my little plucker. While her weight isn't bad, the vet said she'd like to see about 40 more grams on her, she's probably using her energy staying warm. My house is at 70 right now, central heating so its not COLD but for a tropical bird with no feathers.. its not that comfy either.

Anyway, does anyone have a lamp clipped to their cage? What kind do you have? I was looking at the ones made for full spectrum lighting and they're 80 dollars for a lamp and a small cage thing (that looked easy enough to make if I was at all creative.)

:grey:Gracie thanks you

Or I can get something like this [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Normande-Lighting-JS1-111-3-Light-Black/dp/B001ANRC3E/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1333419812&sr=8-13]Amazon.com: Normande Lighting JS1-111 Trac 3-Light Tree Lamp, Black: Home Improvement[/ame]

Put a bulb in each socket and put it between my Grey cages.. That's an idea..

Roxy roxy roxy, I know you're on the forum. I SEE YOU LIKING MY POSTS.. <.<

I have them on all 3 cages. I wasn't willing to spend $80 each on ZooMed floor lamps that everyone said fell apart in weeks, lol! So I bought full spectrum bulbs from FeatherBrite and cheap clip lights from Walmart and I've used them for years. Just make sure the bird can't reach the cord through the cage. I'm guessing your cage has bigger bar spacing than mine do; I've kept small bar spacing to keep my cat out of the cages. The only bird who ever messed with it was Pete. It tipped over onto the top of the cage, scared the crap out of him and he hasn't gone near it since.

You don't have to clip it right on the cage either. Rowdy's is clipped to an antique copper wash tub that I use as a planter. They clip to shelves or pretty much anything.

Ha, thank you Roxy! I'm debating between the clips, or the floor lamps with the moveable arm thingies that I can turn and point on to the cage. Especially if it has two of those, one of each cage. o_O; Maybe I can make it a pretty color too.

yeah, I considered the Ott lamps as at least they look pretty nice, but couldn't find any actual proof that they had UVA and UVB rays rather than just a very bright, white light to the bulbs. A decorative floor lamp that you could use whatever bulb you wanted should be fine. In that case buy the 20W bulbs for the birds.

One of my conures actually got sick because I didn't have the lighting. I thought her being in a sunny window was good, not realizing it was blocking 90% of the UV rays. She started doing this painful sounding scream and biting herself. So I took her to the vet and he first tried to blow me off, saying, "Birds scream you know." I said, no, not like this, and she's biting herself like her skin hurts. Look here and here and you can see she bruised herself. I said I've had this bird a long time and know her very well; something is wrong with her. Finally he examined her and told me she probably needed the lighting since we both agreed with the West Nile it wasn't safe to take them outside anymore. And of course I live in a place where half the year it's just too cold.

Right away she knew it was what she needed. She would sit under it with her wings spread out to soak it up. Within a couple weeks she stopped the screaming and biting herself, and within a few more weeks she just looked and acted healthy again.

Yeah, I want to get it (I already have a bulb just need a lamp) and put it up for the girls, especially Gracie. But I'm sure they will both benefit from it :D

Thanks

I got a clip light and hung it from a plant hanger a few inches above Puck's cage, because the directions said that the bulbs should be however far above the cage. It wasn't far enough to keep him from climbing on it when he was on top of his cage though...

"NO! PUCK GET DOWN FROM THERE!! " ...he gets down... 5 minutes later.... "NO PUCK! OFF!!" ...he gets down again... repeat... He eventually stopped messing with it though. I didn't want to re-mount it because I'd had to use a drill to drill into a brick wall to hang it the first time. THAT sure came out of my deposit....

Ok, Merlin just started playing with the clip for hers. I said, "No, Merlin, don't mess with the light!" And her reply to me was a big fart! Kind of like a little kid sticking her tongue out at you:D

Lol!

Merlin burps, too, but I think farts are her favorite noise of all.

I heard Pete one day make a burp type sound and then he said, "Sorry!" He hasn't done it again though.

I wonder where Lucy heard a burp??? Rio Mom that is the same lamp I use and I like it so much better than the floor lamp. But like said it does cost more.

Yes, I was quite shocked when on day 2 or 3 of Merlin being here, I gave her her breakfast and she just looked at me and belched, lol! I was like, oh my goodness, the things some people teach their birds! Now I just laugh at it. I was embarrassed about the farts, too, but everyone seems to find her very funny instead of appalling:D

Hi,

Im thinking about purchasing full spectrum lighting for my Clancy as the winter is approaching. I thought about the need to get the cage top one as his cage is pretty much a mansion! But im not sure.. I saw in this thread the idea to just order a bulb from featherbrighte and find a clipon light at walmart or a place like..is there a minimum distance for it to benefit him..safely!! are the bulb size universal fitting? I want to make sure i get the right one.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Alright.. Is their a specific type of lamp to look for? im planning on ordering just the bulb online from featherbrite..have you utilized them?
