Bumble-ing Along

Bumble's First Outing!

It's a gorgeous day in the Seattle area, so I'd decided to try getting the harness on and then going to the Farmer's Market. The harness went on, but I decided the Farmer's Market was too far away for a first outing. I live about a mile from the local mall so I decided we'd go in that direction.

We went to two pet stores where lots of people admired her and offered treats (she wasn't interested), the craft store, the big box electronics store, and the bedding/kitchen store.

She was very irritated at me at first and she didn't stop chewing on the harness for more than a few minutes at a time. I distracted her with a nutriberry which sort of worked, and she LOVED looking at the fish in the pet store. Especially those weird genetically altered glowing ones - I assume her superior color vision makes them even more interesting.

She seemed to sort of settle in by the end of our journey. While we were in the car I put her into her little travel cage and on the way out she just chewed the harness but on our way home, she climbed the sides of the cage.

Down side - these little harnesses have tiny elastic shoulder straps. She chewed on it a lot and I can see where it's weakened a little, so I don't trust it to keep her safe. I've emailed Avian Fashions to see what they suggest. Although it's very very small, it seemed like it might be a touch to big as well. I may be opting for an Aviator in the tiniest size instead.

Here are our pics! [emoji211][emoji846]

This is the sweet clerk at Best Buy offering her a treat. She was very interested in Bumble and asked a lot of questions.

Bumble was interested in the budgies, but not as much as the fish!

So much has happened with Bumble. I was just reading back through this thread and I'd already forgotten how I had to lure her to step up with treats. Now she steps up without even using her beak to check stability.

She plays peekaboo consistently. She says "peek" every time and twice "peeka" - no other words yet. But she makes kissy noises all the time and in context. My friend was over yesterday and Bumble leaned toward her mouth and we heard three kisses and then we died of cuteness.

Tonight she made up a new game where she flew away from me to her cage and then when I held my arm up (our recall signal) she would fly back. I tried to get video but she consistently flew out of the frame, little stinker! But she did it several times and seemed to be having fun.

I think she's at the very beginning of her first molt. I've seen a few feathers coming off and at first I freaked out (I briefly had an IRN who plucked and I don't want that for Bumble). Then I googled and discovered that first molt for Parrotlets happens between 4-6 months. She's about 3.5 months old so that's probably it.

She got good and soaked in her bath tonight. Here are a couple of pics [emoji846]

I made another batch of chop today, so I decided to let Bumble have a plate with all the ingredients separately served. I also gave her a quarter of a strawberry and half a cherry (pit removed by hand so no bad stuff could get out). As usual, she dig into the sprouts first - but the second thing was the little pile of crushed red pepper flakes. She are the right up! Ha!

She has also apparently decided the dogs are part of the flock. Today when they were looking out the window and barking, she joined in with some loud chirps. Haha GREAT.

So when I read that people potty trained their birds I thought it was actually impossible and they were crazy. But why not try it? So I'm thrilled to share that Bumble's potty training is going really well. If I put her on her play-gym perch every 11 minutes and say "go poop" she usually does. I can't believe it. We've only been working on it for a few days and she's mostly got it. When she doesn't want to poop she flies up to my head which is less desirable haha!

We're also practicing her flying from my arm back to her perch.

I wonder if I'll always be in awe of her intelligence? It really does amaze me.

That is great! Potty Training is even more important when dealing with Bigger Parrot Boon! The time between is also greater and so is the Boons (Poops).

Much easier that most people realize! You target the most important thing: Timing!

I think I'll take the short time and tiny poops LOL

They are so smart! Nigel is potty trained but has some issues flying (he wasn't fledged and then he was horribly clipped, wondering if flight feathers will come in). I've seen videos of a parrotlet being told to go poop, he flies to his perch, poos, and then returns. The little ones are just as smart as any of the big guys IMHO.

Last night she hopped over to her perch on her own and sat there for a minute. When she came back to me, I realized she'd pooped over there. A bit later, I pointed at her perch and said "perch" and she went, and then I said "go poop" and she did. Later still, I noticed her eyeballing the perch and I could see her thinking about flying to it, but I got up with her and walked to the kitchen instead and got pooped on, so I think she's actually making the connection that she needs to go there when it's poop time.

As for flying-the breeder believes in letting them have their first flight and then giving them a light clip. In retrospect, I'd have asked her not to clip Bumble but it honestly doesn't slow her down. If I try to leave the room, she flies to me. She flies back and forth from me to her cage, and the other day she started to fly to her cage but did this amazing in air 180 and flew back. So I think she'll be fine when her flight feathers all grow back.

Well Jim let me accommodate you [emoji16]

This is very short and pretty sloppy, but I only had a moment to grab my phone. I have to hide it during playtime or she gets mad [emoji35]

She is cute, isn't she? And she truly owns my heart. I can hardly wait to get home at night and hang out with her. Haha such a dork - I had no idea this would happen.
