Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE

Tsali - African Grey- I am a one parrot parent. It's a full time job keeping Tsali healthy and happy.
So I decided to buy Tsali a new cage. He has a huge beautiful cage - domed top sized for a Macaw. He doesn't utilize much of the cage so a great portion is wasted space. He also has a large wooden play stand that hubby and I made for him. He has never enjoyed playing on the playstand.

I figured if I bought a cage with a play top I could sell the playstand and get rid of one big bulky thing in the living room. Well I found the perfect cage - a Prevue Hendryx Delux - been looking at it for some time. It is beautiful - has a domed top on one side and then the play top on the other side. So I finally bit the bullet and ordered it.

It came in two huge boxes - when I looked at the dimensions, I took a gigantic gasp of horror!! Apparently I ordered the "DOUBLE" which is 35.8" wide 45" deep and 63.5" tall. WOOPSIE, I meant to order the single size which is 24" wide, 36.5" deep and 63.5" tall. Yikes, the double is just way too big, so tomorrow I will be contacting the company to find out how much it will cost me to return the wrong cage. It weighs 97 lbs. and came fed ex. so I am figuring the return shipping is going to be . Here are pics of the two cages -- and oh - the double cage was about $80 less than the single because it was on sale -- they looked identical so I ordered the least expensive one.

This is the cage sitting in boxes in the garage playtop - wrong one.jpeg

Bummer! Are you sure it's "too big"? What is Tsali's take on the matter:D

Hope the return process isn't too difficult.

I would love to keep the cage, but a huge downsize in our living space is in the near future. We are selling the horse farm - our house is right at 5500 sq ft. We are looking at condos around 1500 sq ft so size matters.

I will probably wind up listing it on FB Market Place.

I'd keep an open mind still. Our condo is only 984 sq ft and Kiwi has his "single macaw" cage next to his play stand. Together, they take up about a 60x30" swath of the living room and it's still not too bad space-wise. Before this, we were in a 750 sq ft sublet basement with that setup too.

If he's anything like my CAG, your baby will use every single inch of that cage. Personally I'd hang on to it.

I kind of agree with greytness, just because he's not using it all now.......

Plus once you add all the toys you feel you just have to get him, all that space kinda fills up quick.

Trust me every time you go for parrot food you will be ogling the toys, thinking about how much fun he will have playing with them, and also knowing in the back of your mind all the fun he's going to have DESTROYING them!

Find out all the relevant costs of the return and then sit and think on it for a short while. Bear in mind that the more active a parrot is the more healthy they are likely to be. If you think that Tsali can make use of it and enjoy doing so then that would make it a great investment in her future. :)

Oh dear! I'd wait until you move, then think about the size. If it is too big and you've looked after it in it's box and not used it I would guess you'll probably be able to get nearly your money back because of the discount you got. So other than having to wait to solve the problem it's a win win!

See that would be a waste on Salty, he rarely spends much time in his cage, and that little bit is either on his sleeping perch or playing with his toys on the floor. Say about 1/3 of his cage. That IS a nice cage though. Tsali will at the very least like that he can flap his wings any where in it.

Exactly! Tsali spends a great portion of his days outside his cage. I want to have an interesting and fun place for him to play other than on my shoulder and tearing up the door frames. When he is in his current cage, he utilizes the upper 1/3rd where his toys and food are. He has almost every Caitec food foraging toy - :04: two of many of them, plus toys to destroy, swings, and two boings. They will all fit in the smaller cage and even more importantly, the cage will fit through normal sized doors so I can move it more easily and give him a push outside without straining my back.

Also, hubby isn't happy with the idea of having this gigantic cage which will require dismantling to move it through a doorway.

Thanks all of the ideas - I'm going to post it on Facebook MarketPlace this afternoon - if there isn't any interest in a few days, I'll check on freight to ship it back.

Well just to give you the tiniest idea in the shipping....
I had to replace the grate in Bumble’s cage.

Replacement part-$12
Total charge to my card-$50
Safe parrot-priceless

But I think it’s going to cost you more to ship it back than you paid for the cage in the first place. New in box you can probably get a good price for it.

Re: Big Cage Mistake - REALLY BIG MISTAKE - it just keeps getting worse

Update1: Monday - Talked to the vendor Wayfair and I have to give a huge shout out to this relatively new company. THEY HAVE INCREDIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! So after a long conversation explaining my cage woes, the CS Rep that I spoke with, who just happened to be a CS Manager agreed not only to help me arrange the return but also to pay return shipping and gave me all the info I would need for the UPS dude.

Late Monday night I went to the Prevue website and it appeared that I had made a mistake about there being two different cages with the 3159#. The difference in the sizes mentioned on the different websites was due to some of the sites listing the overall size with the seed guard on and some listing just the cage size without the seed guard.

Update 2: Early Tuesday Morning - So early this AM I called Prevue to verify the cage size and sure enough the difference was the seed guard. UGGG:eek: Immediately I called Wayfair to cancel the return, which they gladly did.

Update 3: Late Tuesday Afternoon - The cage is sitting in my garage, I had some errands to run and when I got home the cage was GONE!!:eek::eek::17: My UPS dude is incredible, so incredible that he picked up the cage straight away (he had not yet received the cancellation notice). So NOW I am trying to find my Tsali's cage which is somewhere on a UPS truck with all labels removed (per Wayfair's instructions) and without the return info for the Wayfair Warehouse people to identify the return.

So, I feel like one dumb :38: and I am sincerely hoping that Tsali's cage will make it back to us.
