Baby Green Wing macaw refusing formula at 11 weeks old

Hi loved all your pics and been following Robert intently.

There's only one thing for it and that is allow your wife to be hands on with Robert and she's sure to fall in love with him - then he will get your kisses (LOL) and she won't notice the house smells different/Robert!

Robert is looking GREAT, Chad! Thank you for the update! :)

Do you weigh him regularly to make sure he continues to thrive and gain weight? IMO he's too young to be on only one single handfeeding a day. The formula for babies is pretty complete, and I'm afraid he won't get all the nutrition he really needs only from bananas and other fruits.

Here is a link for you. I cook this for my own flock, serve it warm, and they all love it: http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-food-recipes-diet/22594-cook-portion-freeze-my-recipe.html

Here's a link to all our foods/recipes. Please check it out, therein lies some fantastic information, ok? Parrot Food, Recipes and Diet - Parrot Forum - Parrot Owner's Community

What smell is your wife complaining about? Nothing should 'stink'. :32:

And I agree, let your wife play with Robert, too. You both will have a lifetime companion. :)

She has started playing with him and loving him so much already. Can you believe that? He has formula 3 to 4 times a day. Each feeding he eats about 50cc to 120cc. It varies alot.

Faeces is kinda solid. But dunno about urates and urine.

He likes to sleep on my lap while the wife drives.

This is how he sleeps in his cage most of the time. Yes I finally bought a cage for him to sleep in at night. But he is still a free range bird.

Cage in the porch/gallery that I built using aluminium 1 x 1in angles, 1in wire mesh, steel sheet for tray at bottom and self tapping screws. He will stay in here when we have to go out. Haven't put him here yet as he goes everywhere with us.

Night time cage to protect from predators and to keep him safe when we are cleaning the house

He is climbing up on the bed and unto my pillow now... lol
Look at how beautiful he is! This is last weeks pic (week 12)

Was looking for him all over the house... look where i found him!

Wife is onboard... they love each other so much. He shares a different more gentle bond with her. But with me he threatens me and get his own way and begs to come along.

What do you think of this pic as my forum profile pic?

Since Robert has become interested in food I decided to make a kind of concoction of fruits, veges, grains and nuts. I used what was available in the fridge and freezer today. Didn't take long. About 1hr. He absolutely loved it!

Preperation

Made it all bite size!

Mix

Close up

I bagged it without fruits because I find that fruits don't freeze and unfreeze well. I mix fruits in fresh. or maybe not at all to prevent from being too sweet.

Adding fruits

Fruit, vege, nuts, grain mix

Mix close up

He took his time and sampled everything then decided to eat everything in the mix.
This is his most recent pic. Tonight! 13 weeks old!

That's the backlog I have had for the last 2 weeks while he was ill.

I have not been following this thread too closely because I don't ever plan to hand-feed a bird, but I am really glad I looked because those are great pics! What a cutie pie Robert is:D Cutest stage of a parrots life IMO is right when they're growing their feathers in for the first time. Good luck with him!

He is simply gorgeous! I'm partial to his name (my husband is named Robert) and he is just so adorable with that baby face!

Thank you so much for sharing the video clips and pictures!! :D I'm smiling from ear to ear.

Robert looks FABULUOUS!! And what an integrated part of the family he's become. LOVE IT!! I am so happy to see how your pretty wife has fallen in love with Robert, too.

You are (both) very dedicated big mac parronts, which becomes crystal clear while looking through the photos. :D

As for the feces, depending on what my guys eat and how long they 'hold it', their urine content sometimes appears cloudy, too. I wouldn't worry about it, honestly. :)

Hello to my friends! Robert has been full of energy even though he was pumped with antibiotics for the last few days. He still is refusing formula and only eats about 50cc a day. I offer him bananas and veges every time I feed him. He seems very content and very demanding at times. Always begging to come along when the wife and I leave the house. I ordered zupreem pellets to mix with his hand feed and also to offer to him moist as weaning food. It seems like he is almost ready to wean as his interest in non formula food has been awoken.

After eating 50cc, he would usually start quarrelling and running from the syringe. Is this at all normal?

Also, my wife has been complaining that all I do is talk about Robert and that I kiss him up so much. She also said I don't do that to her as much. Truthfully I have been spend ALOT of time with Robert. But I also give much more time to my wife. Seeing that he is a free range companion and he has no cage, he poops everywhere. I normally clean it up very quickly. The wife also complains that the house smells weird because I don't mop the tiles often enough. I always wipe up his poop as soon as he drops it. But I try to mop at least once a week.
She told me don't make her regret the decision to get a macaw. She is under some stress with her studies these days. I hope I don't lose Robert. I shed some tears this morning when she said maybe I should give him back if the house continues to smell funny.

All my life I have wanted to have a parrot pet/companion. I begged for it since I was a young child. So now that I have Robert, I can't let him go.

1. My greenwing was my constant companion, so yeah, they want to be with you...

2. Macaws and relationship issues... Hmmmmm... where have I heard that one before... OH YEAH, THAT'S THE STORY OF MY LIFE... Give it time. Work it out. Have the wife spend some time with her too... maybe that natural macaw playfulness will suck her in too...

"My relationship with this bird is different from my relationship with you, it's kind of a parent child thing. Surely you're not jealous of a bird. [Okay, it's obvious you ARE but I'm taking the high road here.] What are you going to do when we have kids? The house is gonna smell funny when they're going through diapers right?! So how is it so different when "the kid" is a bird?!

If you care about me, please don't give me these sorts of ultimatums, they tear me up inside.

NOPE! NEVER HAD "THAT CONVERSATION BEFORE..."

I am mopping twice a week, keeping his cage clean and cleaning up after him all over the house. Free range makes it alot harder and tedious to clean up EVERY part of the house.

She has warmed up to the bird nicely. And she spends time with him alone when I am out. Women love ultimatums, especially married women. I am not gonna take her on. Will continue to clean and love them both.

All ymlife I have been yearning for a parrot. Finally got one. Loving him every day. He is well cared for.

No doubt is Robert well cared for. It's quite obvious how much he's loved. :)

Not ALL women (married or not) like ultimatums....just saying. :21:

My husband (then boyfriend) was not overly thrilled when I adopted Kiwi, but he knew how much I wanted a bird in the house. He only agreed to it if he was 100% my bird. That lasted all of a few months:09:. He loves Kiwi, plays with Kiwi, talks to him and he is "our bird" now (except when it comes to cleaning and feeding him, he's still MY bird when it comes to the work part:rolleyes:).

Your wife will warm up to Robert, especially since he's such an adorable little bird!

Probably shouldn't have butted in, my scars are showing...

You are probably wise not to push. Looks like your wife will be hooked in not time, if she isn't already.

Greenwings are amazing.

Hey guys my baby just woke up from sleeping and he is panting. Panting right? But he hasn't even been playing or flapping. Just woke up and panting. Then he started sneezing like once every 5 mins. There is a clear spray of liquid that comes out when he sneezes.
If you look at the video you will see the clear spray when he sneezes at 29 secs in the video. You may have to use slow motion on youtube.

I responded on the other forum as well but this looks serious. You should
Get to an avian vet ASAP.

Oh no! This is a medical emergency! I really hope you were able to get him to a doctor immediately! :(

Hi everyone. Finally back home with Robert. Had to consult with 3 veterinarians. Third and last one helped. A non-Avian vet who is very knowledgeable about birds; namely parrots. I spent 4 hrs at this vet as he did all his prodding and examination, he concluded that Robert doesn't have a respiratory infection. But he does have Hypovitaminosis A. He told me his plumage is very dull, the papillae on edge of the choana on one side is smooth and he has an irritation in the trachea from having been exposed to something foreign & having low immune system.

He requested that I get a specific multivitamin, some raw broccoli & pumpkin blended in blender and gave me an antibiotic for 10 days. He also asked that I update him at the end of the treatment.

Gonna start with him night feeding.
