Aviary Life

I wish i lived next door to you. You'd be chasing me out of your aviary with a broom all day and all night long.

Me to the person currently redoing my website:

“Does it bother you that all your beautiful creative energy is being used to represent creatures that look like reject demon spawn?”

Depends on the baby! They hatch ugly, get uglier each day, and then POOF! One day they are cute lol

Nope! I would put you to work snuggling babies!

I've seen it said in an educational video that the bird species that are hatched totally helpless (there is a scientific name for it, humans are also in this category, can't remember it though) tend to be ugly to humans, while the ones hatched ready to follow parents around, like baby chickens and ducks, tend to hatch cute. I guess it's because they need to be able to keep themselves warm so their feathers come in first.

Yes! Altricial species like parrots and song birds hatch naked and blind, while precocial species like chickens and ducks hatch ready to eat, run, etc.

So we are setting up for breeding season and the process is slower than usual because I am slower than usual lol. So don’t mind the partial setup but here are some of the gang!

Vin, a grey hillerman, one of my most timid birds and thus the hardest to get a good picture of!

Faramir, one of my Emeralds :)

Tank and Panzer; hard to get a good picture of because they are sooooo not shy lol

Saber, in a different section because he’s one of the new birds; I’m confident he was hand raised and we are really getting to know each other :)

Misty and Adolin, my blue pallid and violet pallid pair

And a progress update on Tindwell! Look how well she is refeathering!! Again, you all know how much I believe in SUNSHINE, FRESH AIR, FLIGHT, AND A GOOD DIET!!!
I’m so excited to see her changing so quickly:)

Our breeding cages are 4 feet long by 2 feet wide and tall; I’m a stickler for FLIGHT! Some of the birds in our flock came from a breeder who kept her birds in 18” squares! For years! Some of the newer birds are still plucking but I’m confident they will have stopped in the next 12 months; several are almost fully feathered now.

Here’s my little soap box, again, I know. BREEDER BIRDS SHOULD BE HAPPY BIRDS! Don’t be afraid to ask for pictures of the parent birds! If they are plucked ASK WHY. Sometimes there has been a temporary health issue, etc but USUALLY it’s because the breeder hasn’t bothered to meet the needs of their flock and the birds are showing the signs. Grr. Can you tell I’m currently in a mood? Hopefully I’ll be posting more happy updates soon :)

It's almost like being there!!! Such lovlies of every color. I especially liked the emerald!!
Go ahead rant! I'm a huge believer in sunlight happiness. No bird should be stuck inside for decades!!!! When the weather is nice get em outside, when the weather is cool go for a car ride.... When it's cold just love em.

The emerald is a favorite of mine as well.

Tonight has been frustrating and disappointing:(

I was supposed to pick up a couple of new fosters but due to my limitations (I can’t be in the car for very long right now) and an unexpected set of bad luck for the owners, we weren’t able to connect :(

Seriously it’s so rare to find such well adjusted emotionally and mentally stable birds!

Silver, how come your aviary IRNs can be safely left together unsupervised all day when the usual advice is never to leave them with physical access to each other unless they're bonded pairs? Is it just because they have more space than in the average lounge or bird room? If that's the only reason, then how much space is enough space - what are the dimensions of a lounge that would be OK to leave two males together in nine hours per day? I ache to adopt another IRN (not a specific individual, just any of the ones in need) but not if they couldn't both be uncaged while I'm at work.

Aaaand our newest two fosters; guess their names ;)

They look like Maven and Doris to me. Names are one of my interests, more of that game please. :D

Silversage! I know!! I say the same thing about Pikachu!!! So we'll socialized, so well loved, so confident, so happy. Their previous daddy was one excellent parront!!!!!!!! I hope in the near future when he is settled and finished vwith school he gets back into parrots!!!

They are gorgeous! Their daddy cared for them greatly!! It's a testimony to him that all are all so well adjusted!! He worked some birdie magic with his flock!

Hi friends, sorry I’ve been so absent, I’m in the hospital again, trying to keep this baby girl from arriving at 31 weeks, trying not to have seizures, etc.
