I have a 9 month old Timneh, he was born to a breeder and stayed with his mother until 4 weeks old, he then went to a parrot store where he was hand fed for another 3 1/2 months. He was weaned for two weeks before coming home with me. I visited him during the 4 months he was at the store every week and sometimes up to 3 times a week. By the time he came home he and I were quite attached.
He spends most of his day either on his stand or on his cage. He spends time in his cage when I leave and at night to sleep. Most days though I'm home all day. Not to say I spend all day with him but I usually move him from room to room as I move around during the day. So again not surprised that we're quite attached.
He has a diet of zupreme pellets, random veggies and a random selection of bits of human food daily. I weigh him every couple of weeks to make sure he is maintaining his weight. He is 297 grams first thing in the morning after his morning poop and fluctuates 1-3 grams up and down.
Okay! Now to his behavior, the last couple of months he has been sitting in my lap (when available) and begging to be fed... from my mouth!!! You might bee wondering, what makes you think that's what he wants? Well let me tell you. He makes a soft squawking sound, reaches out with his beak like he wants a kiss, forces himself past my lips, opens his mouth and bounces his head up and down in a quick motion. I've watched baby birds feed, his intentions are unmistakable.
What is causing this behavior? Does he need to go back to bottle feeding for awhile? Is it left over from that? I never feed him when he was a baby, he shouldn't look at me and see mom. Could it be mating behavior? He does seem a bit young for that. Have I over indulged him? Should we take a set back and maybe incourage a relationship with another household member? We do have a Quaker in the house that gets the same treatment, a cat and dog. So attention is spread around. Any thoughts?
