Didn't stop someone in China from stabbing kids. IMO it's not the guns ,it's the culture. Someone who could do something like this believes the world turns around them. They think they are the center of the universe. Another example of how self centered and vain the world has become. Oh how i wish we could embrace something like the native american (Indians) culture where you lived in harmony with nature and the earth.

No need to apologize, just felt I needed to take a stance on parents being responsible for their kids actions. I don't have any guilt or remorse over the past, I did what I thought was best. :)

No Wharf, I absolutely HAD to apologize, no ifs and or buts.

I was VERY narrow minded with my statement, and I admit that freely and openly. I was also quite overwhelmed and most definitely not thinking clearly or straight when I threw it out there. :(

...and I'm still not thinking clearly... :(

All I know is that I am SO very sad about this....sad beyond words...

Me too Wharf, I am sorry as well.
The statement was not meant in that way. It is just so tragic and numbing these events that are happening more and more.
I just keep asking myself what I can do to make the world a better place and things like this happen and you just don't know anymore...

harm done by letting every man and his dog own a gun is so obvious

Sorry, I just don't believe that at all........and throwing "dog" in there doesn't help your case.........

read up on how many legal gun owners have saved their own/families/neighbors lives by being a responsible gun owner, key word there is responsible. I've owned guns for about 30 years and never had to use it but sleep better knowing I have it. My wife is also a gun owner since meeting me and would have it no other way.

There is a ton of truth to the saying; "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". Even in countries that have gun laws, armed crime still happens.

My heart is just broken, I can't even comprehend this.. My daughter is 5 and I just want to hug her and hug her, imagining if it could have been her... going to school, so innocent and not even really knowing what a gun is or of the damage it can do, one minute alive, happy and playing, and the next minute gone, because of some troubled and incredibly selfish boy..

Its insane to read that he went there to kill his mother and was happy to take the lives of these poor children as well... He then turned the gun on himself. I wish he hadn't of done that.. I could think of a thousand ways to make him suffer for what he'd done... so lets hope that now he will be suffering for all of eternity in hell. I am not religious, but BOY I would like to believe that.

May they rest in peace, and I hope that one day their families can find peace in all of this, even though I don't think I ever would... :'(

I don't literally mean dogs, of course. 'Every man and his dog' is a common expression here in Australia, which basically means anybody & everybody, a lot of people (not sure if it's an expression used in the US or not - ?)

Every man and his dog - Meaning and definition of this idiom

Sure, tightening up on gun ownership wouldn't wipe out all gun crime...but if it reduced the frequency, particularly of this type of shooting, wouldn't it be worth it?

wouldn't it be worth it?

not to me........criminals don't abide by laws, so banning them would make them the only ones armed (other than police, etc.)

I'll admit guns are probably easier to obtain here, but outlawing them is not good IMO.

I'll say it point blank, I keep my gun in my nightstand loaded every night, everyone in the family including my young son knows guns and gun safety. Why should we be punished for what immoral people do?? I'll say it again, outlaw guns and only the criminals will have them, that ain't fair to honest law abiding people. Responsible gun carriers have thwarted more crimes than I can count, not to mention the home invasions that were stopped as well. Guns are just one form of harming/killing people.............should we ban knives and scissors as well???

I heard about it at work this morning....What a terrible thing that's happening in our nation with psychos shooting in public areas, especially children....It's quite terrifying....

This is a tragedy...terrible... god speed to the families.. knowing the children are in a better place won't make the loss easier for the parents...

But at least they'll feel no more pain.. losing a child is a pain I know.. losing one to murder...that would be infinitely worse..

from a Facebook quote.......

First grief then will come anger, we are all feeling it. Then our society, that is struggling with the fact that there have always been evil people in the world, will want to overreact and strip away our Constitutional Right to bear arms, by limiting or doing away with the guns that protect us from those that would prey on the innocent. Gun owners (approx 47% of households in the US) must speak up in the days ahead, no matter how difficult it seems. We must educate and remind those caught up in the emotion of this horrible tragedy, that disarming the innocent, will not protect the innocent.
Respectfully, -Jessica

Guns aren't the issue. There are many responsible gun owners. My fiance is in law enforcement and also agrees. these people are sick and there are far deeper issues than gun control. How about the upbringing of the shooter? Why didn't his family see his pain and see the signs? Good luck trying to change the us constitution. it is horrible and terrible but this crap has been going on for decades and my friend Grace died in the Oakland private college shooting. I miss her like you wouldn't know.

Every time something horrific of this magnitude happens, everyone responds in the same type of ways... 'It's because of lack of gun control', 'Bad parenting is at fault', etc... basic human instinct is to put an attempt of some type of reasoning or blame because we just can't understand why something this ugly could happen. We try to rationalize something that just can't be understood.

You, I, and most every person we are around have empathy, compassion and kindness. We know we could never do harm to any one in this kind of way (especially to children). There is no reasoning this out, no matter how much we could try to. This person was deeply disturbed both emotionally and mentally. We all know by old and recent history that there are people in this world that are evil by nature or are incapable of basic humanity, for whatever the reason. This is what it is, a tragedy.

Just bless those little girls and boys, the adults, the families that lost their son, daughter, mother, father. They were all loved by someone, and we should stop to give them the consideration.

Being from Australia, we don't have guns here and its a completely different culture, so its harder for me to understand. But I personally think there should be at least some kind of psych evaluation before purchasing a gun. I know that if desperate enough, they could still find a gun in the end, but it might stop those spur of the moment thoughts were someone just decides to go on such a horrid rampage. Weather its harming themselves, others or a huge tragedy such as this one.. Even if it saves just a few lives.. This is just my opinion.

When you consider than gun related deaths in the states accounts for about 10,000 victims per annum as opposed to about 200 in Canada and about 30 in Australia, it must be something that is entrenched in the society there.
Also, it's pretty obvious to me that gun ownership levels and the availability of those guns also plays a huge part.
God bless the second amendment, right?

This is such a massively devastating tragedy :(. The horror and pain it has created for the families of the victims is simply immeasurable. I'm horrified beyond belief without even knowing anyone involved! I can just sense that the term "overwhelmed with agony" is a gross understatement with respect to what the victims' families must be feeling.

It's sorely unfortunate, but true, that any large human population will include a fragment of individuals who possess sociopathic and psychopathic proclivities. Whether these people are biologically predisposed to such mental flaws, are conditioned to develop them through their encounters and life experiences, or develop them from a combination of both elements, said individuals are in fact living among us with their faulty neural wiring. It's especially troubling to acknowledge that some of these people are disturbed to the point of attempting to impose unthinkable tragedy upon us periodically. But that appears to be our sad and frightening reality.

As is probably true with most of you, I don't have a good answer. Frankly, I'm unsure one even exists. I'm convinced that banning firearms within the United States would not serve this dilemma well, mainly because of the sheer number of them already in public hands (including among the criminal segment). So what can be done? I honestly wish I knew...

I would LOVE to know where you get your facts from. Gosh yeah our society is so bloodthirsty and crazy we just love killing little kids.......riiiiiight. Typical post of a non-american. I'm shocked that you even know what the second amendment is from the lack of consideration in your post.

I appreciate your emotive response, however I feel it's not particularly well thought out. I'm also not going to enter into this argument with a predominantly US populated forum.
My figures are correct by the way, a quick Google will confirm this.

Not well thought out? You accused the US of having a blood thirsty, murderous society. You post like where you are from is a perfect Utopia and you come off extremely rude. I've lost a friend in a school shooting and I don't appreciate you making false claims. The US is much larger than Australia so comparing death rates doesn't exactly work like that. Nice try though, and yea you should probably stop because I won't be the only person upset by you calling my society "entrenched" in murder.

How sad are you to attack me and my country when innocent children died here today. I hope you have happy holidays and reflect on yourself and how you treat and speak to others. Goodnight I do not have time for you.
