What is the one breed you wouldn't adopt?

I'm with mikey on this one....the larger conures.

never again, they are way louder than a sun conure and will drive you crazy.....even though I still miss Ninja :(

too bad, she was SUCH A NICE BIRD, and beautiful

Louder than a U2 or a M2???

I think it goes:

M2

Then HYACINTH and GREENWING

Then U2 - (they scream LONGER, not LOUDER than my Mac. Do not get my Mac going... she shatters glass!]

Then BOEING 747 AT FULL THROTTLE DURING TAKEOFF ROLL

UPSET AMAZON DISTRESS CALL

THEN CONURE SCREAM...

Haha. For me, conures are the worst, then follows macaws, THEN cockatoos. Cockatoo's are just pleasant to me, loud and 'deep' compared to the loud and shrillness of conures! :)

Macaws make me jump out of my skin every time they make a noise... haha!

YES, THEY CAN!

Fortunately mine doesn't really scream very often. It takes something that really upsets her...

BUT WHEN SHE DOES...

Hmm, I guess Conures aren't that bad, as someone who is used to U2 screams. One of the loudest Cockatoos I ever heard was a Goffin though. He was at a rescue, and he screamed his brains off when he met people, while "dancing" up and down. He was cute, but very very loud.

Then at the rescue, they had a "Cockatoo Room" - um, I think a 747 at full throttle has nothing on a room full of Cockatoos.

I guess pitch is important as well as loudness. I have a very vocal Cockatiel, and honestly, I barely hear him because his screams, tweets, and whistles are not something that I would call loud for a parrot.

I went to a pet store, and their Cockatiel was very very vocal, and the owners there said he was loud. I had to laugh deep down.

I believe at most rescues it's actually a safety requirement to wear ear muffs to stifle the noise.

I know you're supposed to at dog kennels here :)

The rescue owners didn't, but they had sound proofing so the neighbors wouldn't complain. We walked through, and my kids almost died. I guess I knew what to expect as I'm familiar with Cockatoos. I think the owners were used to the sounds, believe it or not. Their sound proofing was very good because outside their home, you could hear the toos, but it wasn't deafening, or noisy enough to encroach in a neighbor's home. They build some "state of the art" rooms for their birds.

I don't know how the birds don't make each other deaf, but I guess they're used to those sounds.

Cockatoos the few I have been around could raise the dead with their screaming and not just loud, but constant as well. There might be the exception, but so far I haven't seen them.

I had to disable my glass break sensor on my security system because my greenwing would set it off.

I stay away from lorikeets, they spray poop!

They are very sweet though. I saw an M2 being cuddled by a guy taking tickets to a small animal zoo. The M2 looked like it was in heaven as he snuggled up against the guy's chest. Not a peep out of the bird, as it was quite content. The guy told me that he would sit with the bird every day for hours like that. If that guy ever passes before the bird, it would be devastated. They do need to learn a good balance of independence/play time/affection from their owners, probably much like any bird.

And that is EXACTLY the problem. They could be held like that for hours on end, and it STILL isn't enough. They tend to overbond. They tend to love too much... and then they tend to get crushed. Which is why so many of them end up as scream and plucks...

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE M2's. They just tend to be very needy, and don't do well in captivity. Therefore, I regret the fact that they have been introduced into the pet trade.

That's just it. Macaws are loud, but they generally let out a startling, made you jump, what the hell was that AAAACCKKK! AND THEN SILENCE...

Toos can keep it up for hours or days on end...

YEP! I call it the baby pterodactyl noise... Musical it ain't!!!

I had my front door open once, and we have really good soundproofing as well... My GW went off over god knows what, and my startled neighbor's came out to see what happened...

Is the bird okay?! We thought something was seriously wrong with her...

Wow. So many replies. I haven't read through them all.
Since u r worried about how will affect your fid, how about a bonded pair or trio that will be happy together without your having to take time away from Percy, but will be okay with a bit less attention from you.

As much as I love large macaws I feel it would not be right to have such a bird in a small house. Plus I have no experience with such a large bird. I would never get a cockatoo. I hear both good and bad about them. I do not know if the smaller toos are different or not.

Well, technically Cockatiels are small Cockatoos, and they're great as pets, but like any bird, they do require a good balance of attention/independence. You can also get another and they can keep each other company if they get along.

I hear Galah's are great, but again, they are not quiet. They seem more independent though from what I hear.

M2's, Goffins, Sulfur's and U2's seem to be very needy.

No hyacynths or cockatoos. Hys are too much of everything - expensive, high maintance and need too big of everything. Cockatoos are extremely loud and needy.

i wouldnt get a sun conure just because of that constant high pitched screech. also, i dont want to say i WOULDT get one, but i would be, lets say hesitant, about getting a big mac/'too.

I would have to agree with Lorikeets
