What is the one breed you wouldn't adopt?

I had the same thought as Blueridge- those "dark green small macaws" are probably Hahn's macaws aka mini macs. All the personality of a big Mac, only in a tiny body. Lol.

I, for some reason, am terrified of the white 'toos. I think mainly because the bad rap they get...but having a galah has opened the door for me with cockatoos, and she is just a JOY to live with...it makes me feel like I might be able to handle a white 'too. Macaws are also on my hesitant list, only because they have a huge beak lol

But.... I'll take any and all amazons!! :D but I'm really open to any and all species because the more i learn, and the more experience I get with various species, makes me feel more confident with different parrots. :)

Thanks for all your insights, guys.
I have no experience with cocatoos but what I've read, does make me hesitate about them.
I'm especially thankful for the tips on 'screechy' types. I can't have a bird that screeches all day, my puppy would go hesterical ;)

My Percy is a zon and despite the fact that he 'wants to eat me' too ;) he is a very lovable bird. I fully accept that 99% of his biteyness with me was my fault. Since ivadapted my approach with him, things between us are much better. He's not noisy at all, except when he get over excited during 'dance time' but that can easily be managed by turning off the music (he loves to 'dance' and 'sings along' at the very top of his voice). He contact calls OnLY in the morning before breakfast and the evening before bedtime and only for 5 minutes or so. If we call out gently (not load like him), saying "We're here, Percy!" He generally changes his contact from the ear splitting squaaaack to "Baba!" (What he calls me because I tend to call him that, it means 'baby' in my country) or "Ouma!" (What he calls my mom, it means granny and we all call her that). I would get another zon in a heartbeat :)

If the green birds I saw there turn out to be Hans Macaws, I will take those I think.

My favorite day is when I get to experience a different bird other than my own . I love learning about their different ways [and can see the good in all of them]. If it were me ,Id choose the ones nobody wants [might open a whole new world for you] It did me :) You have to ask yourself how big a bird person you want to be. Its hard generalizing species [their all so different] I could talk about that till my head spins.

Although I LOVE birds, all of them, I do know myself well enough that I only want smaller species, I'd say I wouldn't be very comfortable with anything larger than a cockatiel or quaker. When I look at some species of the larger parrots they take my breath away with their beauty, but I never felt that feeling that I wanted to have one, like I do with say a parrotlet or lovebird. I KNOW I can take care of them very well, I don't know that I could a larger bird. I'm kind of a 'better safe than sorry' person.

Very wise words! I will keep that in mind. You make a very good point - the bird that no-one wants will end up at the SPCA for a period of time and will then be put down :( I reported these people because I wanted to SAVE birds so you're right, "saving" would mean to take on the "unwanted" ones. Thanks for this - your post has really touched a nerve with me.

I agree with pinkbirdy- take the ones that nobody wants.

In this situation you would be giving them another chance at having a life worth living. Even if it only means fostering them until you find an appropriate home, then at least you'd be that stepping stone to a better life for them.

I believe Birdman took in an amazon that was sentenced to death by her owner, and she turned out to be a marvelous bird. Not every animal with a death sentence deserves it; they're merely misunderstood and need a special person to help them.
:)

Cockatoos. Hands down. I don't think I could ever do it. I tip my hat to cockatoo owners, they are too much bird for me. My father had an enormous cockatoo....I will never share my home with that species.

I will never get a sun conure. Oh wait, too late!

The species doesn't really matter to me all that much, I see them differently as individuals. However, I would certainly rather adopt a bird that's unwanted or in need than a bird in "perfect feather", "Perfect health", young, etc.

It's rather amazing to have a bird that has been kept in isolation for many years to trust you and step up onto your arm.

I fostered a Sun Conure that I loved. She was gorgeous, but LOUD! So another conure, although I have a Blue Crowned currently, would probably not happen. My gf's brother in law has a 'too that I'd love to own. She's such a sweetheart. But the dander is what would bother me with her. But no matter, he'll never give her up anyway.
So to answer the original question, conure, 'too or lorikeet (poop shooters).

My sun was only loud when I came home from work. He did his little Daddy's home squawk, dance, fly to me, and conure love rub thing, before climbing inside my shirt in the conure spot...

That was one of the most loving animals I ever knew, he's been gone for almost five years now, and I miss him to this day...

As for the Hybrid's... while I understand your bias, it's not the bird's fault, and one that is already here, and in need of a home and love, still deserves to find it, regardless of how you feel about "PURE BLOODS." I've fostered several, and would still have one, if he didn't have needs I couldn't meet... that made him dangerous around people and my other birds at times. [People ruined that bird! Now he is with his own kind...]

I have to agree, I am very against purposely hybridizing birds, especially macaws, but I wouldn't have any problem taking in a rescue hybrid of whatever sort.

I have always wonder if the hybrids have more problems or don't live as long. But I really want an Emerald Macaw! They are a Green macaw (I cant remember what one) :green2: and a Hyacinth macaw! :blue: = :green2: They are BEAUTIFUL! :p

Wow, they certainly are beautiful. I had no idea there were Hyacinth hybrids. It's funny how it has a Hyacinth face and the green feathers of the other parent.

It is strange to me that there are hybrids, because you would think they would only want to mate with their own kind, which is natural in the wild.

I would never adopt a large Macaw though, because I know I wouldn't have the room for the enormous cage it would be happy in, and free to flap its wings in. If I had an aviary, and I lived in a more temperate climate, then it would be a different story.

My favorite Macaws are the Spix, but they're extremely endangered, so forget ever owning one, much less finding the proper housing for one.

HATE IT! HATE IT! HATE IT!

HY - HYS, of all birds, just shouldn't be hybridized... there aren't enough of them left. And nature made them pretty close to perfect in both temperment and beauty. Don't mess with perfection...

And Buffons (Great Green Macs) are just about as rare as Hy-Hys... [and so NOT a hy temperament!] Buffons are almost as beaky as Scarletts... With the bite pressure of a Hyacinth?! THAT IS JUST SO NOT WHAT I WANT IN MY HOUSE...

I owned a Toucan once, and never would again. He was beautiful and sweet, but what a mess he made. He could shoot poop clear across the room and onto the opposite wall. He also would wait til you walked by and shoot it right at you.

Conures. I will only ever take a conure in if it was on a temporary basis and had a home lined up for the future. Their calls just hurt my delicate little ears!

I'm with mikey on this one....the larger conures.
