What have I done?

My GCC Jasmine has an enormous cage. But you know she utilises all the space and plays with masses of toys. I guess it's for a big parrot but she's never got her head stuck in the wire spacing. She is so active she needs loads of toys and I rotate them weekly.

This is the first day I got the cage. It's way better now! I got bunches of new stuff. I tried to upload an updated pic, but it's not working. :(

I found a lot of large, proper bar spacing cages that are perfect for conures. And the best part is that they're all under 400$ ! They have domes, playtops and cabinets for storage. I found all of these on birdcages4less.com . Did you look at the Avian Adventures Chiquita playtop and dometop ? It's only 380$ ? I can also see all the pictures of your new gcc, so cute !He indeed is a beautiful pine apple gcc!

You know I find it funny no one has said anything about the bird, I did post a picture of him. :p Plus he is my avatar!
LOL I was going to say something in this huge long post, but I erased all of it by pressing the backspace. I hate when that happens. :p

Wow, that is a big cage. :p

Maybe I was thinking WAY to big with the other cage. lol

Yeah, I will go with that cage than. That looks like a good size cage to put a lot of toys and fun stuff for my guy to play with. Well I should say my wife's guy to play with. I am doing all the research so I can get our area ready for the guy.
I still owe $99 dollars for him, but I am going to take care of that on Tuesday. :p After that I will need a few weeks to get the cage and supplies for the bird, that will take me right up to my Thanksgiving vacation, so I will let her pick it up right after Thanksgiving.

I know you all said "Bring him home now", but that would be devastating for the guy, being I don't have a cage, food, toys, supplies, and the area not ready for a bird. :p The guy has been at the Pet shop for four months now, so a month and half will be ok. I will give her the bird before Christmas and give her toys for Christmas. I like what one guy said, I think I will change it up thou a little. I will take her let her see the SOLD sticker, go home for the night than take her back in the morning to pick the bird up. :p Got to play it up a little guys!! Being it will be an early gift.

Also another cool thing, my purchases comes with a free check up to a vet the store works with. Being this guy is the only Vet with a avian certification within 200 miles of my location, I got no choice to the one the store tells me to go too.

Congratulations! It sounds to me like you've put a lot of thought into it. I think you two will be very happy with it. Just make sure you socialize him with other people.

You can never go too big with a cage. They say that you should get the biggest one you can afford. I found a huge cage on Craigslist for very cheap.

He's super cute!

Regarding safety, I would avoid ALL nonstick pans. Some people on here have reported being okay until they accidentally let something burn on the stove (more toxins release when it gets hotter), and then the bird(s) is(are) gone almost instantly. They do produce safe nonstick pans, but do a lot of research on each pan before buying one.

Regarding candles, I have heard that certain types of wax burning are toxic to birds, but I would look into it more. Beeswax candles are supposed to be safe.

Baron, Not sure which cage you decided to go with. The Prevue Hendryx link you posted looks similar to Pritti's cage and it's a great cage. We had a bigger, super-duper, high priced cage before this -- but we switched because this one was nice and wide, sat higher up from floor, and a useful shelf on bottom. If you go with that one or one like it, you'll be able to use the extra $$ you were willing to spend on the aviary and buy more toys as time goes on. If you or your wife like making things, crafts, hobbies -- you should check out the do-it-yourself forum on this site -- there are so many clever ideas for making toys, perches, etc. Many avian store websites have toy parts for making your own. I purchased online some really nice toys on clearance (store has a phyisical location in NJ). They are great toys @ super great prices.

Oh, by the way, if you want, get a Happy Hut. It's the yellow hut thing in the pic. My girls sleep in it every night and never sleep without it. For some reason most conures like them. They are kind of dangerous though, if your conure is a really big chewer they can bite through and entangle themselves in the thread. So far I am checking every day and there is no damage done. If you are sure he will try and bite through it, go with something fleece, like this:ScooterZ Traditional Snugglie XS, Sm, Med, Lg, XL - HUTS/TENTS by MY SAFE BIRD STORE
Fleece will not fray.
Just a suggestion. :D

Here's a pic of them in a Happy Hut medium. Sorry the picture's so huge.

Baron, btw, your birdie is beautiful. i can't imagine why someone didn't buy him/her up quickly -- except... that birdie only wants to life with your wife and you -- that's why he shows her love and nips/bites everyone else -- so they will think he is unfriendly and leave him there for her !!!

you guys are awesome, thanks!! I will keep you all posted, when I pay the rest of the money and get a cage, and so on. I still feel I did this butt backwards, who buys a animal before the things to care for it? :p But I couldn't risk some bird lover coming in and getting the bird!! Like I said, the pet store is being very helpful and I can't thank them enough.

Why can't I post pictures on this website? I posted the picture to my photobucket and copied the HTML code, but it never works. I also just tried copy and past into the thread. The best I got was the link.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l1...n1282/bird.png

right click "direct link" then left click "copy"

then paste it on "insert image"

awesome bird,
an everybody likes a early x-mas gift, cant go wrong

Baron, don't think like that. What you did is not only brilliant, but very considerate and romantic. If that was the only way to get this birdie in to your family for your wife, then you did it perfectly !!

Be sure to tell us exactly what your wife's reaction is.

I just paid the rest for the Bird, and he is in a Big cage in the back. He is going to be taken care of well, so I have no worry there.

I will try and get this bird home sooner, but I think it will still be smart to leave it there until after our vacation. I have been talking to a lot of bird owners as well and they assured me all the dangers are real, but not too bothersome, they told be just be aware and know you have to keep an eye on the bird when he is out of the cage at all time. Stuff I already really know. :p

Baron,
Just want to say congrats on you & your wife's new baby. When you do finally bring him/her home be award that it's normal not to sleep much the first few nights. I was always so worried that I was doing everything correctly. I remember praying that Molly would be alive in the morning. LOL It's funny remembering how paranoid I was back then. You and your wife will do fine, just remember to take all the safety precautions everyone has discussed. Your wife will be so happy!

@Molly -- I felt just like that after Pritti's 'sick bird' visit to the a-vet last Wednesday. I kept tip toeing over to make sure he looked ok during sleep and was so nervous he might need me during the night. After 20+ years as his parront, he's still my baby!

@Baron -- i like the idea of the pet store caring for him/her while u r on vacation to reduce stress on her/him. Hey, here's an idea (more planning ahead, hahaha)... for mom's day 2013, you could get your wife a birdie DNA test - that way you can tell her "it's a boy/girl". I think it takes about a month for results.

You'll find some good check-list style posts in the forums about general safety precautions regarding types of food, wood, cookware, heating, cooling, appliances, handling, toys, etc. etc. You've probably heard this, but it can't be emphasized enough -- check all your small and large appliances for any non-stick coating and be aware of if/when/how you use them. There are many plance that teflon and copycats "hide" such as: the warmer part of at bottom of drip coffee makers, inside toaster ovens, irons. There are alternatives that can be used or safety precautions that you can take if you must use these items. You can google for a list of items that have teflon and non-stick and see if you have some.

Congratulations on your new bird. Just remember that young conures are quite nippy - they do grow out if this but please don't be put off - Jasmine is 6 months old now and a real cuddle bunny but it has taken time and patience :)
You sound like you'll be a great owner, taking the time on the boards to find out everything before s/he comes home. Good luck!

I can totally relate to Molly. I was a mess the first month, worried sick about everything with Boomer. How is Pritti doing, WannaBeaParrot? Hope all is well and getting better everyday.

Congrats, Baron!
