What has your bird taught you in the past 24hrs?

Calypso.

1) That she's beginning to trust me. Yes, she may go a wandering, but when Mum comes close by the foot comes out - take me with you.

2) She likes to watch TV sitting on me. I never thought this was coming so soon. She was happy to potter around exporing.

3) That she pulls nose studs out with one sweep and refuses to give it back, causing mum and dad to panic like heck until she dropped it. Mum will now be removing said nose studs anytime Cal is near.

My girl taught me and the vet that birds do not only bite blood feathers when they were bumped but also bite them just because they hurt. She taught us both that she will pull it out by herself if we dont pull it out for her.

She taught me that she LOVES her mashed sweet potato more when I sprinkle cinnamon on it.

(Von, my girl got metal poisoning that almost killed her and she was on medication for a month just because of an EXTREMELY TINY piece of metal that she swallowed from one of her toys. They swallow it so fast that there is no time to even think about stopping them, so learn from my mistake and keep ALL metal away, ok.

Well he's always been partial to jurassic park, but after seeing how thoroughly he enjoyed LAUGHING to jaws and the burrowers I've learned that he is, simply, insane, and that I should probably stop letting him watch movies where animals eat people and limit his interaction with society.

I have been reading on metal poisoning(hence the panic about my nose stud!!) and am wondering about the toys she has on chains. I check them daily and so far so good, but all toys have this bit of metal that I can find. Is it "bird safe" or is it a question of using some sort of hard wearing string/rope?

Your opinion would be very much appreciated!

Not just my opinion, I am also learning everyday.

The toy that I think she got the metal from had two levels filled with honey treats, it was one of the first toys that I bought her. She finished the top level and I left it hanging because she still enjoyed the bottom level. It was hanging inside her swing that was attached to the roof, so I could not see it properly without getting on a ladder (I am very short). After a lot of headaches and heartache we discovered that she had metal poisoning and I took all her toys down for inspection. The top part had a very thin piece of metal wrapped around the stick that used to hold the food.

For this reason I will never buy toys again, I am to scared. I will rather make it.

Not only is it safer(er if you do it right and do the proper research)but it's also cheaper!

I made my Kiwi a popsicle toy were I got a small twine and then got some popsicle stick(like a lot!) Then i drilled a holl through the middle of all the popsicle stick and I put the string through all the holes until the toy was like 6-8 inches long. That will last her a while!!

As for what my birds have taught me within the last 24 hours.

1) I learned to never turn all the lights off in the room and then go out when Kiwi's not in bed lol! I learned that birds cannot see in the dark and Kiwi freaks out when He can't see. So I learned and turned the light back on, put him in his bed, turned the light off.........and I didn't hear one Peep out of him!

2) Kiwi has taught me that he is starting to like people food and he WANTS me to share!

3) Kiwi has taught me different signs that show me he wants out NOW lol

that's all I can think of. Maybe i'll think of more later.

Teaching Lester my cockatiel to flying is almost as rewarding as teaching my kids to walk. I am so proud of him flying through that 2 feet gap between my hand and my bed.

You are not alone I am able to sleep in a bit, but they make me pay for it with their attitudes later on lol.

Ms. Prissy Beak taught me that birds can be obsessive about toys too

I downloaded Angry Birds, a game for my cell phone (it's horiblly addicting and I recommend you get it if you have an iPhone, Palm, Androind, or Symbian device, but only if you have hours to waste!) and have been playing it petty much non stp for the past 3 days... Ms. Beak has had a similar obsession with a new toy: a bunch of wood and plastic beads strung on a sturdy spiral wire... She has been systematicaly removing every bead from the toy for the last several days. It's a small toy, meant for 'keets or 'teils, so she has been using it as a foot toy. Every time I play angry birds she goes to her toy box and picks up the bead toy, the shape made it difficult for her to get a good crunch on the beads, but she's been working hard, sometimes an hour or more at a stetch. When she's done with it she puts it back in the toy box like a good girl on the couple occasions she has dropped it she looks at me pointedly and yells! Lazy bird, can't go pick it up off the floor herself

Today, at about the same time I finished the last level of angry birds I heard the tell-tale *snap* of a bead, followed by the hollow plink of an empty wire hitting the floor. Now she's done with it

LOL If I take too long preparing our (human) dinner downstairs before coming to see her upstairs (we take her up just before we shut the shop) she lets me know. What's worse is, I find myself hurrying.

The past 2 nights she has been calling for me while I'm in the bath and she can hear me. Doesn't matter that her Daddy is in there with her. I come through all "ello baby, did you miss me?" to be greeted with a shriek. No, she doesn't want kisses, no, she does NOT want to come back out, no, food and water are perfectly acceptable but for gawds SAKE woman - it's BEDTIME! Get that cover over here!

With regards to the metal in toys, my brain was sooooo muddled yesterday from reading a new Conure book I bought from the net (I know, another one!) that I wasn't really thinking clearly at all!

Cal's toys are all wood and rope with stainless steel hooks to go to the cage. So hubs reassures me no flaking will occur. I continue to check though!

I think it's because I get really REALLY concerned when I read these books because I always read the "danger" section in depth for obvious reasons. I then become convinced that if the wind blows the wrong way or she smells a daisy she's gonna keel over! That's mummy paranoia for you!

Sam and Gem have taught me that every thing can be a conure toy and that conures believe strongly in testing toys for possible explosives by immersing said toy in water. This is all well and good when one is talking about some popsicle sticks tied with twine but when the object in question is a purloined hospital pager that one would think would be too heavy for even two determined conures to dump into a bowl of milk and cereal then it was an eye opening experience for the humans in the house. I have to admit there have been times I've wanted to drown the thing, but my son said my face was hysterical when I realized what they had actually done.So I learned some "new math"

1 light weight pager +two mischievous conures +five minutes being "monitored"by a 17 year old eating while putting in some last focused minutes preparing for a chemistry test = one drowned beeper and one thoroughly "off line " hospital administrator. " I am not going to tell my Telecom guys that the beeper was destroyed by a couple of parrots.I would rather let them think I dropped another one in the bath.

Fred has taught me that feeding him fish is NOT a good idea! I can smell fish in his cage, and it's been three days. I've wiped all the bars, wiped down peches, but I can still smell fish. I guess I'd better take everything out, and soak....No more fish for Fred!

-I like to scream, about nothing, thank you.
-My box is my safe haven. Do not touch it!
-I like a sip of ginger ale (don't worry it was just a sip)
- I like watching you, all day.
- I'm screaming again for no apparent reason!

The last 24 hours have been extremely hectic in our apartment. As usual.
Work, packing orders, deliveries, collecting stock and visiting customers.
That's besides the home chores, cooking, cleaning, washing and ironing, it's never ending
It just takes Mishka to say and my heart just melts.
I go sit with her for a few minutes, chatting and playing with her.

Makes me realize how one needs to relax even whilst working

I've been taught in the last 24 hours by my little Green-cheek Mishka:
- that it's foolish for me to expect devotion after only a week
- that she craves my attention, if not necessarily the hands on variety
- that birds can make the oh-so CUTEST noises!!
- patience is a virtue, and the more I practice the happier my results will be

I can't wait to get home to my baby.
