She's sitting on 2 eggs right now. Here is my tracking. Sorry I do track and love spreadsheets. Canelo is a Hoover vacuum and hasn't helped. I took a new coffee box, cut it creating a lip so Venus can't roll them out, then Canelo have desert.

DATE. EGG
2/20/16 Egg 1 laid
2/23/16 Egg 2 laid
3/24/16 Egg 3 laid
3/28/16 Egg 4 laid
4/15/16 Egg 5 laid
4/18/16 Egg 6 laid

We saw the vet today and he wants me to let her sit on the eggs till 5/18/16 to see if this will run its course. I showed him pics of her nest setup, he was good with it, so on 5/18/16 I will remove the eggs and box.

Diet is a rotation of calcium rich foods mixed with vitamin A rich foods since she falls vitamin A deficient. She still has a respiratory issue we are dealing with so vitamin A is key too and we are monitoring.

On 5/19/16 I will begin monitoring her to determine if she is still showing "mommy" behavior for 14 days. If she doesn't improve, meaning she's trying to lay, we will discuss options.

Right now she is doing great eating. Unfortunately, she wants to feed me and I feed her (eye roll). When she starts her "prompting", I place her back on her playtop so she can go in her box.

Is it 5/19/16 yet???????

I have a new concern now, Venus most of the time now has her eyes pinned. She doesn't want to eat other than trying very hard to get me to feed her from my mouth. To me she looks thinner, her feathers are not as glossy and smooth, and she hasn't bathed in a week. I weighed her and she is 350 gms, a month ago she was 370gms, at the vets 362 gms so she has steadily dropped weight. I started blending her chop into a mush and warming it. She is eating it as long as I hold her cup. Tonight I blended carrot, broccoli, red pepper and potato, she's finally pigging out. I added the potato deliberately to get some carbs in her, tomorrow will be brown rice as her starch. Once she's done eating I am going to put a shallow pan of water by her box and see if she will bathe.

Is this normal or concerning behavior? Yes I'm concerned, in a week she's lost 12 gms???

Oh no I'm sorry to hear this! I have no idea what could be going on since I have no experience in this area of keeping birds. That's definitely stressful, I can only imagine. What does your vet have to say about it?

Just to be certain, when in the day are you weighing her? Are you consistently doing so in the morning? After her first poop? This is important, because my ekkies easily lose at least 10 grams overnight. Only to regain through the course of the day.

As for the bathing, if she isn't doing it on her own, you might have to start spraying/showering her. (Mine rarely use their water dishes to bathe, so it always comes down to a shower for them.)

Oh, and good move with the potato and brown rice if she really is losing weight.

If you have been taking her weight at the same time every time, then I'd say you should start monitoring her daily. If there is any further significant loss, then you might want to take her back to the vet.

Agree with Anansi re the weighing at same time of day and it is surprising how much a poop can weigh. Are there any other indicators such as changes to the poop she is excreting? I would keep on feeding her at any opportunity, will she eat egg, my thought is could you top her up before bed with some scrambled egg mix? Quails eggs if available are a really useful size.

Yes, a bit of weight drop is normal during incubation when there is no 'mate' present. Normally the male would be feeding her during this time, and I can see why you don't want to regurgitate for her. ;)

It's also normal that the feathers begin to look a bit 'shabby' and/or 'out of place' since she is occupied keeping her family warm. :32:

You're being an exceptionally good mommy by providing her the mash, and holding the food cup for her. :)

I truly hope Venus will be done after this 'clutch'. She's got to be exhausted. And so do you.

FYI, while I was at the vet with my Hunter, I was quite surprised to learn exactly how many parronts are opting for Lupron injections for their fids at this time of year. So perhaps this COULD be an option for you if she insists on being a mommy???

Thank you everyone. This morning after first poo she was 355 gms. Again she wouldn't eat what I put out for her so I made another mash this time brown rice, potato, red pepper, broccoli, corn and kale. I sat with her, cup with a spoon in the cup (she loves spoons) and she ate like she was starving. I added two starches today, this evening I'll cut back.

She does eat egg, so does Buddy so one chicken egg scrambled works for them both and Mr. Bottomless Canelo that gets what they don't, lol. I give each find 1/4th of the egg, Canelo eagerly slurps up the remaining half. And I do make eggs for my fur babies!

I put a shallow dish of water outside her box but no go there so today I will put her in the shower on her shower perch and see if she will bathe.

Now Husband and I joke about how Ekkies are players, male and female having multiple "mates" at a time. Now I understand why, taking care of a hen having babies full time, WOW!!!! What an endeavor, lol!!!! And this is with no babies!

Here is a Canelo bonus. Two days ago I ran errands before my shift started walked in and found Oreo wrapper pieces everywhere. Guilty, Canelo! He took advantage of the open pantry. I laid the package pieces next to him, as you can see he's unimpressed by the evidence, lol!

Oh I can't breathe I'm laughing so hard!!!

Now I don't feel so bad for our couch! I see Canelo leaves his slobber on your armrest? Oscar does that to ours. Unbelievable how much saliva he can come up with when we're eating something....ANYTHING. :54:

In January we started trying to train him to NOT get on the couch because we want to get new furniture. I say trying because we haven't been hard core since we are in and out all the time. I don't think that will happen anytime soon and the couch is now Canelo's couch. We've talked about getting the new furniture but keeping the couch for Canelo since it is clearly his! And as for slobber???? OMG! He will drip like a faucet with a bad leak! My sister refuses to babysit him because he drools when she eats, lol!!!

ROTFL about Canelo :18: how your sister refuses to babysit him because he drools when she eats!! That's funny. Good idea to keep the old couch for Canelo. He already assumes it's his lol.

My female ekkie wouldn't come out of the nesting box after about a week and the male ekkie wasn't feeding her. I had to feed her with a syringe because I couldn't stand her crying for food.

Interesting little event this morning. I placed Venus on the scale, she had already pooed, scale says 350 gms [emoji30]. Then she pooed right there on the scale. I removed the poo and her weight dropped to 348 gms. A poo weighed 2 gms, lol!

And I'm spoon feeding her now. She wants the spoon to feed her so I'm just going with it. This morning is collard greens, broccoli and brown rice blended to a mush. BTW I'm loving my Nutribullet blender so much I keep it on the counter. It's so easy and cleans easy.

I have a vet appointment with the vet in an hour for Venus. While feeding her she started crying, eyes pinned, like a desperate cry. Buddy didn't help, he's so jealous of the attention he started mimicking Venus' crying at the same time. I'm hoping the vet will agree to put her on Lupo today and will give a shot of vitamins. I'll have an update later.

My thoughts are with you and Venus, Tracey. Looking forward to your update.

Sending positive thoughts your way. I know one day it may be my turn to go through this experience. Thank you for sharing your journey

Vet visit over and I always encourage people to speak up when they, family or pets have medical treatment, also I work to protect and enforce patient privacy so it's a very important thing to me. I Asked for a different tech right at the start of the appointment because the tech signed me in, took us to the room, and begins asking the reason for our visit but she insists I'm there for plucking. She had the wrong chart. She told me she spoke to me on the phone and set the appt up but insisted I said Venus laid 3 eggs, no I told you 6. Yes I'm irritated now. I heard a coworker speaking rudely to her when I walked in, now I know why. So I told her I want another tech, preferably Todd because he has worked with Venus. She goes to get Todd, in tow is the vet I asked to see. She told me on the phone Dr. G doesn't see patients anymore when I asked for him. Get this, she wrote it on the chart too. Dr. G asked why she didn't bring this to him? Then while waiting I heard her tell another customer about why my bird was there, she got it right this time. Not a big deal but really, that is not her place to speak about other patients. She has no place working medical. Yes I told Dr. G.

OK moving on. I am Venus' Husband, my new title now. Now for those not familiar with Venus' history, I've had her for 14 months and we've battled respiratory infections with her. It's back with a vengeance. She has airsaculitus again but this time with pneumonia. So we are back on antibiotics, she received a calcium shot today and she weighed 357 gms at the vets today so that made me feel good that she ate really well with me even though I had to spoon feed her. Vet likes the food choices too. Also she will take a calcium supp for a month.

Now the tedious news, glad I asked for another tech that didn't act like an air head because now surgery. Follow up next week, THEN surgery. The vet wants to open the impacted sinus and remove the infection from it. We all agree this is causing the reoccurrences, infection remaining. So WENDY!!!!! THANK YOU for posting Hunter's journey with surgeries. That really helped me with making the decision to move forward. Also I am to order fake eggs and let her sit on them as long as she wants. The vet doesn't want to do Lupo yet, I'm good with that.

Ever question your judgement of someone? I'm fine with my opinion of the first tech. The original tech was in the back and started screaming "It touched me it touched me!!!!!". Apparently there was a roach in the laundry soap, she was loading the washer but the drama, OMG. The guy that I said was speaking to her rudely, he told her to straighten up and be professional. WOW!!!!
