Trucker comes to live with us

I live in the desert, no trees here. :( He's had those perches for the last 14 years so I think he'll be ok with them until his new ones arrive in a couple days. No where local sells big enough ones for his monster feet. I know they are uncomfy for him because he alternates holding his feet up when he stands on them. I leave the cage open when I'm home though so he has been spending most of his time on his playtop perch, which is much nicer on his feeties. And he does have 2 others in there right now that I bought for my ekkie. But he wont use them. Thanks for the idea though, wish I lived somewhere with actual trees! He had another bath tonight and I got almost all the nails on one foot filed down, he got really stressed so we left the rest for tomorrow. However he seemed to really enjoy his bath/shower tonight. Still no luck on getting him to eat good food. Well except for a few bits of walnut and almond.

If you have some vet wrap you may wrap it up. It will give some give and better grip to them.

I do have vet wrap actually, well it's for people not animals but I imagine they are the same thing. Will wrap them first thing tomorrow, he's sleeping right now ;) thanks

No worries. I am happy to help a guy who has waited this long for him person. :D

Where in AZ do you live? I have found neighbors with manzanita, Palo verde, shammel ash and bottle trees that have are bird friendly. If you live near by Phoenix, let me know and I will help you find some good branches to make a perch.

I live in Lake Havasu, it's about 3 1/2 hours from Phoenix. No one really has grass or trees here. Pretty much only trees we have are the creosote also known as greasewoods. Which have tiny branches and are poisonous if I r emember correctly. That's awesome of you to offer to help out though! Wish more people were like that! I took the dowel perches out this am and put in one's that were intended for my ekkie that comes home in January. Trucker is actually using them pretty well considering he had only ever had the dowel ones. He was pretty miffed this am though when I changed them. He even kept trying to feel for the dowel ones, it was funny and sad at the same time. You guys have all been so awesome! Here's some pics of him playing with a little sneaker foot toy from mysafebirdstore.

In those last photos, Trucker is definitely looking better than when you first brought him home! He's going to shine once he goes through his first molt with you guys!!!! :D

Thanks guys! I'm amazed at how much better his feathers look after just 3 baths!

He will glow with a good diet and proper care. I love how comfy he looks on the floor. The one time I tried to play on the floor with my girl she panicked because its made of lava ya know?!

The wonders of what bathing could do!!!! He looks a whole lot better!!!! ;)

He loves to truck along on the floor, that's how he got his name all those years ago. :) Hey mikey I noticed in another thread you said you could tell the difference between male and female b&g's. Can you do that with Trucker? Or is it just a b&g thing?

I am unsure as Military is one of the ones you don't see very often around here. I'll ask my breeder friend whenever I see them again....

The males bite harder! :32: That's the easiest way to tell...

Lol! He acts tough and tries to bully me, which I don't let him get away with, but he has never actually tried to bite yet so hopefully I can avoid testing out your theory! I know he's a big sweetie at heart, but for someone who doesn't understand a bird bluffing you he would seem really scary!

And Mikey I'd appreciate that. Thanks

I think DNA is the only way to tell. Unless of course HE lays an egg...

Then her name will be changed to Mother Trucker?!

(Boo! Hiss!) Sorry! That was bad...

Yeah, the big bad birdie routine actually has a point. They are trying to see who they can bully, and who they can't. "Ha-Ha Made you jump! You're mine!"

Translation: Let's play!

Okay, that person I own. This person I play with...

On some levels, it really is just that simple!

And macaws sense fear from a mile away.

Don't hold your breath though as I see them once in a great while these days....lol.....they're very busy with their monkeys....

HA!! At the Mother Trucker! That gave me a giggle. Trucker is totally like that! And he got away with it for years with my hubby's grandma. She is terrified of him.

And Mikey, take your time. We will more then likely have him DNA'd at his vet appointment in a couple weeks. But I'd be curious to have you take a guess either way and see if you were right. ;)

Oh and I broke down and bought him a cage just now. I couldn't make him live in his old ratty cage any longer!! This is the one I bought.

They all do that... except the Hys for some reason.

The Hys intimidate another way:

"I'm gonna play with you whether you like it or not! Comprende?!"

It's so hard to convince people that it's just a game...

That cage is very similar to My RFM's cage...

My greenwing is in a King's dome top double macaw cage.
