From the moment an umbrella cockatoo walked up to me as I was cleaning feeding and cleaning parrot cages at the zoo and said "up, up, up," I was hooked. She wanted me to pick her up. Of course, I gave in to her demands. Unfortunately, she didn't want to get off of me when it was time to continue working. Though, I tried in vane when I should be finishing the area I was in, the cockatoo insisted on staying on my arm. I was a rookie bird keeper and had no idea how to get her back into her cage. No, the zoo was not big in training their employees. But now after many years of learning the hard way of bird handling, I consider myself an experienced bird person. Through many bites and some heart aches, I always have room to accept and appreciate the unconditional love given by such intelligent and beautiful animals.
