Summertime Outdoor Aviary! HELP

nevermind I found GAW wire for a decent price online I do however need to decide on one thing should I have a wire roof, wood roof, or metal roof?? The aviary will be in half sun/half shade and if I dont get a wood or metal roof on it I will have something for them to get in total shade but I want to know what kind of roof you guys think is best??

My local lumber yard was able to order the wire for me. It was a bit more expensive than the online price, BUT since I didn't pay for shipping, the end price was considerably less.

I have no idea regarding pollen being a problem. Birds can sneeze though so if they inhale a bit I'm sure they can dislodge it.

I put a narrow tarp over one end of mine last summer so they could have shelter from rain but the wind wreaked havoc on it quickly. This spring I am adding a 3' wide roof over one end and about 2' down on the upper peak on that side to create a small sheltered area. I do have lots of trees for shade so they can move out of the sun.

I built one up north .. I used 4x4 wrapped in aluminuim siding on all uprights.. I secured them to a small 6x6 cement pad I poured using special hangers(they are used to secure the 4x4 to cement pads when building deck) I then temporarily used untreated 2x6 on the inside to support the framing.. I then attached the stainless hardware cloth.... And then moved the temp supports to the outside of the cage permanently ..This helped in securing the cloth and keeping the birds from chainsawing through the 2x6.. For rain and shade I used the aluiminuum roof panels that interlocked..It was light weight and could be taken off and stored on nice days.... This lasted for over 6yrs with very little Maintenance....and its probably still there ( I sold the house and moved south)

Also if you decide to wrap your 4x4 with aluiminuum siding make sure you orient the seams to the outside so the big guys can't peel it back..

Good luck

One more thing to add ....keep angles to a minimum and cuts to standard lumber sizes and your work and maintenance will be a lot easier..

This is why I used the kit; no angle cuts required. The connectors create the correct angles for the peak of the roof and the walls.

For small birds these connectors that accept 2x2 lumber might be better:

Where did you purchase the wire for your cage? I like the set up and I would be able to move it with me when I move to our new house.
