Something is happening!

My CAG Buzz loves roaming around and on top of his and Buddy’s cages. Buzz loves opening Buddy’s food door, and eat his food. Since Buddy came home with us, he doesn’t want to leave his cage but recently he has started coming out of his food door and roaming. I like this because he’s being adventurous and getting exercise.

Today I hear banging, go to see what is going on and Buddy is trying to open another door. I unlocked it and he came out but then went back in and continued to bang on the door and he came out again. He’s out and roaming now. I’m watching Buzz and Buddy because I’m wondering if they will be friends. Buzz tried to cozy up to Venus (my gorgeous Ekkie) before she passed and she wasn’t having it. Right now Buzz and Buddy are doing well but haven’t gotten too close to each other. My concern is Buddy will bite first, Buzz not so much.

Looks like the beginning of a potential new friendship! And go Buddy, being more exploratory! Buzz is a lot bigger than Buddy isn't he? I forget how small GCAs are sometimes.

Kiwi also seems to prefer using his little 'bird door' (breeder door) on his cage to the big door on the front. He'd probably use the unused 3rd dish door if the breeder door wasn't there. He seems to like being able to open and close the door himself and squeeze in and out of a tight opening. I think going through little doors is more like leaving/entering the nest hollow for them and thus more natural than walking out a big door.

Buddy is very small. Last year we saw two GCA’s and we were amazed at how much bigger they were compared to Buddy. Husband says Buddy was the runt, lol.

Barney was also really small. I think male amazons tend to be a bit smaller than females to begin with but theres got to be some natural variation in there too, just like some humans are bigger/taller than others.

Both of you are very lucky, that they just like opening the small doors and sneaking-out. Julio will open any cage door he finds closed. If found closed after several times, he simply disassembles the body of the cage. We found that out at about the same time that we found him to be a Free Roamer and Flier (not recommended for all Parrots, they have to prove themselves first).

Just love it when an Amazon finds the World more to their likely and comes out to enjoy it!

I am so excited that he is venturing. He’s such a chicken, he’s actually lost a feather, I picked it up and showed his feather and he freaked.

As four your mechanic at your house, hilarious!!!! Buzz scares me with how he has figured out how to open the doors however he hasn’t figured out how to open his big door. Venus had us cracking up because she would open AND close her big door. She opened Buzz’s big door and entered his cage. That is when she sliced and diced up my fingers because she was beak to beak with Buzz and was about to take him out. But I love that Julio makes himself busy, lol.

It sounds like he's finally settled-in and feels safe and secure enough to start venturing out of his own little "safe place", his cage, to check-out the rest of his new home. Sometimes it takes a long time before they are willing to do this, so it's good that he's starting to take steps forward, and at his own pace.

The only thing I would say is that you want to make sure that you're in the room any time the two birds are out together, as you're right, you have no idea how either one of them is going to react to the other, and both of these birds have the ability to do some real damage with their respective beaks.

UPDATE! Buddy has been venturing out of his cage every day this week, except today. His door has been open but no venture today.

When he's been out, Buzz (CAG) has been trying to interact with Buddy. Buddy is being his stinker self and not accepting it. So far we are good, distance has been kept. Buddy did allow Buzz to get closer to him so it's a slow work in process. I am keeping eyes on them when they are close because Buddy is my biter, Buzz is mellow and I do not want a bird war. I am hoping for good things but we will see.
