I was just wondering if a section for senior birdies can be made for those of us that have or even had elderly psittacines and all things related to aging birds.:22::smile041::grey::blue1:

I'm so *IN* on this!

The Rbird looks (a good thing) and acts (not so good) the same as he did 30 years ago, but I am having to get serious with myself about planning my actions based on his longevity and my own. I've had him half of my life!

I welcome this thread.

Thanks, Smbird!

Kudos.

At first I believed that I was going to get limited to a separate special section of the Parrot Forums! Okay, so its for our older Parrots. That's good, I'll just take a moment here and reset my pacemaker! :D

It really is a good idea. Since there are specific care issues that are more common with older Parrots. Different discussion points with the AV. And, diet can play in, as well as disabilities caused by aging.

Has real merit! A great idea!

Smbirds (and Baby)... our wonderful friendship (and our discussions on these very topics) make me sure you won't mind if I site a link to a thread I started a while back. There were comments by many that really shored me up and warmed my heart. The thread was called "Final Arrangements"... sad, yeah, and I was very burdened when I posted it.

It was a real help.
This thread lifts my heart, Smbrds; thank you so much for starting it. It was really what I was looking for earlier... a place for ongoing support and help, not just "final arrangements"... ack.

smbrds, thank you for the suggestion. I love this idea! It would be an excellent resource for our beloved senior parrots. I will bring it up for discussion in the mod forum and we'll try hard to make it happen!

Sailboat, I promise we will never sentence you to solitary confinement.

What a great idea, Shawn!! I think we will all learn some valuable tips on managing older birds - I've a few of my own!!

I actually just shot sweet tea out of my nose laughing at your post and scared goose half to death and drenched him in sweet tea

I also think this is a wonderful idea! We have a couple ourselves:)

I wonder if some would like to share their thoughts on the REASON(s) their birds have lived so long.

I'll volunteer. Single biggest thing? LUCK. I look back at the things I did and shudder... going to fairs (even with clipped wings) where there were dogs, and wild kids... going to monthly Parrot Club meetings, where there were often strange/unquarantined other parrots... feeding him junk food, even Coca-Cola... letting him perch on the steering wheel when we were visiting friends... and then of course, there were the years and years when I was working, and had so little time for him... I could go on.

As for additional reasons, yeah, I did some things right. I got him on Harrison's (supplemented with fresh stuff) when he was around 4; I was always very careful about toxins/hazards; I never scrimped on getting him the best of anything (and during my college years, that meant I did without, sometimes); and last but never least, I loved him with all my heart.

And now, we have a community that happily (and for free) gives advice and support. More good LUCK!
