Kiwi seems to be going through a second molt right now. He just finished molting his annual "big one" about 2 months ago. Now he's molting again. Lots of little pins on him and lots of little feathers (and a couple big ones) on the bottom of the cage. Anyone else's bird having this happen or idea why he is molting again? The only major change was the new cage last month, but he seems quite pleased about that. Any ideas?

Zilla is molting again, or still molting. Has been since I got her. I just chalked hers up to all the meds and the change in diet and environment. Maybe the zons are being weird this year????

Also might be interesting to note, a random splotch of blue is currently growing in right above his eye:rolleyes: His blue is really looking asymmetrical and goofy these days, though it is REALLY expanding all of a sudden (he used to have very little blue). Debating some blueberry kool-aid to "even things out:32: lololol (J/K). I'm also noticing bigger yellow on his wings. He's getting to be quite the stunner! Still weird that he's molting again. It seems to be mostly his "accent" colors spreading all of a sudden.

I don't know. But ever since spring, Mango started losing his down, and has been losing feathers ever since. The bigger tail feathers& wing feathers just started in the fall. I asked my breeder and he said every bird is different.
He looks good still and always has a pin feather somewhere.

HOLD UP! I thought of something that has changed recently besides the cage that may be driving this! He got that Featherbrite sunlamp last month too, and boy does he LOVE it. He gets it for about 2/3 hours a day most days. Perhaps he was in fact vitamin D deficient since moving here to Oregon and is now building his stores back up? This "second molt" (explosion of feathers) started last week.

I think Kiwi passed "getting to be a stunner" long long ago!:D

I get quite amused watching Mango preen an then ruffle his feathers, releasing a down "floaty" or 2, then goes nuts trying to chase it down!:)

We have the same continuous feather explosions here too. But mine are for different reasons. With Raven and Griffin it's their first big one so it goes on continuously until all of the 1,000's of feathers are all turned over which can take a very long time. Raven's only a little more than half 'done' and he started in about August! Then there's Twigs' constant molting, but I think Budgies just molt several times a year so seems like year round lol.

Mopar is going through the same thing. Thought it was done a few months ago!

It's that time of the year. He's got to get all his pretty feathers to attract his girl friend. That and his diet is so good.

:eek::eek: We told Kiwi he couldn't date until he was 40 and could at least ride a birdie bicycle or jump through a hoop or something to support his own chicks lololol:D

Buddy lost a flight feather last week. About a month ago he had a lot of new pins on the back of his neck but nothing new. I've been watching him but not too sure what is going on with him. He's still trying to mate so it's a little crazy here. Waiting for the other flight feather to fall. Nothing yet.
