I had a sun conure quite a few years ago and remember the ear splitting volume of his screams.
Now I've been considering a GC but was wonder if they are as loud? I know they will still be loud but I'm hoping its not quite as ear splitting.
Green cheek volume is definitely not on the same scale as a sun. I have one of each and there is a definite difference in the ability to make my ears ring . Tango can make lots of noise if he’s in the mood, but it’s very different than my sun Baby.
My issue with Sun Conure shrieking is not volume but pitch. The two I have experience with have the most irritating pitch imaginable. Hopefully there is variance, though others may not be as bothered. I'd rather live with jet-engine loud macaw screams!!
Yes, the pitch can be high. My sun had a lower pitch scream so it wasn't terrible but it was non stop since he was spoiled.
I ended up getting the jenday. On the way home with her now
Remember, pitch can vary! My wife’s, Bongo does a high pitched flock call, my JoJo does a squeaky toy sound! You can teach the flock call to your tolerances.
Kiwi, my GCC, only get loud when she flock calls as I leave the room then she settles down in a few minutes and is back to being quiet. That's about as loud as she gets and it's far from ear splitting.... more of a whistle...whistle, pause then repeat When we visit the bird aviary to get her nails done, we often comment that the Suns there would never fit in our home due to the noise level. They are so affectionate, but a magnitude louder than our little green cheek. We often take Kiwi to our relatives, stopping in hotels, etc. and could not do this with a Sun IMHO....
Green cheeks can make a racket when they want and yes it is high pitched. but they are nothing compared to a Sun. I have seen first hand (or should I say heard) a Sun Conure having a screaming match with a U2 and the Sun put up a pretty good fight.
SassyByrd (DYH Amazon) JoJo (GCC) Betty (GCC) DEARLY LOVED fids lost to “Teflon Disaster 12/17 RIP Pickles (GC),RIP Winston (Sun), RIP Lady PLEASE TAKE 5 MINUTES &TOSS OUT ALL YOUR TEFLON NOW!
Take my input as someone who has very limited lifetime bird experience, but I do have 2 Suns and a Green Cheek. I would compare them to fighter jets versus an electric car. If you have anyone in your house or close proximity to your house, I would definitely go with the GC. We are blessed to be on several acres and I can hear my Suns with all the windows closed from anywhere on our property. Pickles the GC just chatters, when she wants to really get noisy she rings her bell. I think my birds are at the "extreme" of normal but there is a huge difference between the species at our little conure castle.
The first one is actually cute, its low pitch and is usually done in a melodic manner. I'd put this one as about the same as a cockatiels highest pitch. This one is very tolerable and is the one I don't confront him on.
The second one is higher and gets irritating rather quickly. Skittles will usually make this one when he wants my attention. This one often results in him being put back in his cage til he stops if he does it prolonged. This is also his most common one, but barely and it rarely results in a prolonged act. I just don't let up when it happens.
The third pitch is borderline intolerable. For someone with high tolerance of screeching, it gets intolerable after 10 seconds, while for most other people its intolerable right away. Skittles only makes this noise when he sees danger or something along those lines. Fortunately, this one is much less frequent than the others. I'd also say that while this one is nowhere near as loud as a siren, its also louder than a smoke detector. I'd put it somewhere between the two.
The biggest factor when it comes to this is based on the birds. Some birds are very noisy others rather quiet. But the pitch is the same. Skittles is on the quiet side but I'm convinced that's because he's free-flighted.
A crossover Quaker Scuti (F), A Sun conure named AC, A Cinnamon Green Cheek conure Kent, and 5 budgies, yellow (m), clark Jr. (m), Dot (f), Zebra(f), Machine (m).
I can barely hear my GC conure in an adjacent room even with a contact call, he prefers to grunt and has learned that talking gets him the most attention vs. squawking.
Skittles will sometimes be more noisy than usual. Lately, he's actually been much more vocal especially and it does get irritating. The plus side is, if I point my index figure at him, he shuts right up.
Yes he can be nagging and rebellious (what sun isn't), but he is also very responsive to vocal commands and redirection. Though sometimes he tests even those.
