I can honestly say that I am glad I did take her. Wow! Can she scream... LOL I love her already so much and want her to be happy. The person who owned before me spoke Spanish. I am glad I did prepare for this. She didn't respond to English and even seemed very frightened by it. She speaks Spanish and because I don't it seems so cute and funny. The other day I forgot how to say to get down and get into the cage .. I tried the translator but it didn't do the trick so I had to call my friend who spoke Spanish. I put him on speaker. Josey would listen to him then look at me and say "non" So it took me an hour to get her back into the cage so I could go to work. I think I was so excited to get her that I over did it with the cage size. It is over 6 foot tall. So I am sure you guys can see my issue ... She is telling me no and looking down at me from her throne...lol! She was in such poor living conditions that I wanted her to have the palace.. It work .. Now I am her servant ..lol

I once took in a Conure that was raised by Spanish people, and only understood Spanish. I speak very little Spanish. It was a slow process to rehab and train it in English. But, just like a bird that doesn't understand any human language, be patient, and teach her what you want the same way you'd do with any other bird. If you can learn some basic commands in Spanish, use both languages at first, and gradually not use the Spanish. My Paco became just as fluent in English as he was in Spanish. I kept his name to help him relate.

Josey must think she's gone to heaven in her new, HUGE cage, lol.

I was just picturing you, trying to figure out what to say to her in Spanish. :) I'm sure she'll pick up English soon enough...probably quicker than it would take you or me to learn another language.

Do you have some pics to share with us?

I am SO happy she's with you now!!

hahaha....what a sweet story!! And I have no doubt she is happy in her new palace :) As for her speaking spanish....THAT'S hilarious!!! Enjoy your time with her and I look forward to hearing your stories :)

Great story. Talk about a language barrier! I'm sure it will get better with time. I bought my Savannah a 6 foot cage too. I try bot to let her in top because she too thinks she's queen of the world up there!

That's ok her cage is huge !! I like seeing macaws look small in a cage. When I first got Harlow [playing chicken on top of her cage was a worry for me too] I had to be able to go to work. :) I put a perch on her cage door and made a big deal with her [and treat ] when she went in easy. Also when I let her play on top of her cage [I go visit and play with her] So she doesn't associate me going to her on top of the cage [that she always has to go in ] I have a step stool too and I call her bluff and insist that she steps up. You will find your way . Just be observant and be willing to try different things . You have a lot to learn about each other . My relationship with my rehome I got in Dec is way different now in June and still progressing. :)
