I just left someone's house who's birds looked sick, the place the birds were kept looked disgusting and here were 2 dead birds in a cage. He said he doesn't know how thy did. I'm afraid it was disease. What do I do when I get home? Let's say the birds were diseased, can that get on and I pass it to my birds? I figured I should put my clothes in bags and shower as soon as I get home. Anything else? Am I overthinking? A little panicked.

Bag the clothes (preferably BEFORE you enter your house....like in the garage), wash all your garments and shower. Do NOT handle your birds until after you've showered.

Stay away from that place.

Also: Don't let 'this' person into your home and handle your birds. Same applies to people you commonly know that visit 'this' guy's house.

Just JMVHO. :)

I wouldn't go anywhere near your birds. If you have a gym membership I would go there to shower and have someone bring you some clothes if you can, or maybe a friend or relative would let you shower & change clothes at their house?

I may be over-reacting, but that is what I would o just to be on the safe side.

Ya'll are the best! Thank you so much. I am showering at a friends house as soon as I get out of traffic. This was a major let down for me. I went to go see his Queen of Bavaria Conures and scarlet babies, everything was horrible. I'll upload pictures when I get home. I snuck some when he walked out the room.

'Lysol' your phone, too, Stephen!! This is no joke. I don't know how many parrots you go see on a regular basis, but just because the majority 'may' look perfectly healthy, there 'is' a chance someone 'may' have some nasties somewhere. ALWAYS practice good hygiene after visiting with other birds - always!

I didn't even think of my phone! I've got some Lysol wipes I can use for it.

I agree... good luck Stephen. I think all of us bird parronts who are aware of disease have been paranoid at some point, especially those of us here who have lost healthy looking babies!

People get excited about bird marts, but this is advice for that too! Not to change the subject.

How sad, Stephen. if you wear glasses or a watch, swab them too! Might want to also swab the portions touched in your car. A little paranoia now might prevent a cataclysmic regret later.

Are you in a position to helpfully and directly convey the need for this person to clean up his act? While it is critical to protect your birds, the ones left behind in that pigsty desperately need help!

Yes. All it takes for some diseases is some errant dander. And don't forget your hair. (Likely a no-brainer, I know. But better to say something unnecessary than make assumptions that I'll regret, later.)

Any bags that you brought with you as well. And jewelry. There's no such thing as too careful in this case.

And as Wendy pointed out, even healthy looking birds can harbor disease. Be careful whenever you come into contact with birds whose health is not a 100% certainty in your mind.

Stephen, before you post the pics, please put up a warning, as some of them are SUPER disturbing!!! :(

I would call authorities to remove the birds! Is it ASPSA you call or something like that depending where you are from? I couldn't sleep after seeing something like that, those birds need help asap!

I know you are trying to get a hold of the ASPCA. I truly hope these poor animals will be taken out of there ASAP.

This is truly disgusting beyond words. :( Just....WOW!!

If I had the money I would fly down there right now. This makes me so sad.

I just don't understand people sometimes. How does someone look at a scene like that every day and feel like it's okay?!? And to the point where he even felt okay letting a first time visitor witness it? Not even an ounce of shame? Of guilt? Wow.

That's just awful.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what exactly am I looking at, here?

Oh my goodness! That is disgusting and heartbreaking. I also wonder how it can get that bad and someone hasn't noticed it is getting out of control and they need help. These animals must be not only physically deprived but psychologically as well. No living thing wants to be in these conditions.
I hope you get somewhere with the authorities. [emoji120]šŸ¼
