Question about Eclectus

If you want a baby, I would trust the breeder to place the correct bird for your time of household. Explain everything.

I have 2 eight week old chicks in the nest. They are being raised by their parents but I handle them. With this clutch, the female is very reserved and the boy is very inquisitive and "braver". I think it completely depends on the bird.

A two year old bird is very young, so don't rule that one out either.

IMO you can be happy with a male or a female Eclectus. One of the nicest birds I have is an older male who has lived with me just a couple years.

I know it is not as appealing, but there are some wonderful plucked birds looking for homes too. My oldest two girls are pluckers and they are funny, happy birds. I'm very glad I offered them a home.

He certainly does not look sick to me. What makes you think he's sick?

Just because he has been on a less than perfect diet doesn't mean he's sick.

Eclectus have hearty appetites usually and will often start eating fresh foods as soon as they are offered.

Still think you should go visit this boy! :)

I agree with Sodakat, although now you do sound really undecided now about what you truly want. Maybe you need to give it more thought?

yes, i had a moment of doubt but i am back to wanting a male :) :)

What i am undecided about is if i should buy an older bird or baby :) :) As i never had eclectus before i am not sure.... I know i would never buy an adult cat or dog...But with bird i don't know...

FWIW, I've bought babies and second hand adult birds. If I were to get one today, I would get an adult.

Yes but a dog lives 10 to 15 years, A parrot will live much longer than that. A parrot that is only a few years old is still a very young bird.

I got all my birds from the same home. Tina was 10 when I got her (Ruby was 7 and Jax was a baby.) and I have had her now 10 years. I'm sure she will live much longer yet. I just recently had her into the vet and she is a healthy girl. I do not know how long they were in the home I got them from but the owner was a heavy smoker. They wandered the floors and I'm not sure of their previous diet. Still they appeared healthy and in good feather. After I bought them I made sure to get a vet appointment for a health check and went from there. I've never regretted getting them or wished they were younger. As strange as it may seem Jax is the only one who has had expensive vet appointments and the two girls who were exposed to cigarette smoke all that time have never had any problems.

LOL maybe smoke is good for birds, who knows??

I can't tell anything from the photo other than he is a baby. I'm sure he is sweet. Aren't all babies?

oh yes i know they all are adorable!! i was just worried his feathers look strange a bit?

Ziza, it's a tough choice as both male and female are stunning birds. I researched like crazy and went back and forth trying to figure out which gender was right for me. In my heart I wanted a boy because I read they were better talkers and not screamers and not as moody. But, of course this is not a rule of thumb many males scream. And so, at the last second I decided on a female baby and when I went to visit her I was gabbing with the breeder and when he learned my husband had a beard he would not sell her to me. I was shocked! He said she would fall in love with him and that would be the end of a relationship for me. Whether this is true or not, I listened and waited for my Oliver for months visiting every weekend from five weeks until I brought him home. He's the absolute perfect bird for me in every way. I'm sure I'm not helping but I just wanted to share my experience. As for beak color, Oliver's beak is still blackish at the top and he is a few weeks short of 7 months. He was born on my birthday (9-9-2012)!

Hi again,

I went to see 2 parrots. One is very nice and healthy looking, has all the papers etc...
Second one... Looks ok but he has black on the end of the feathers, and his beak is peeling.... Not sure what is the correct word...specially on the middle it has round thingy you can see 4 or 5 layers...but we really liked the second one for some reason...

Also, the first one is friendly, sat on our hands etc... Second one was seating on his owners hand but would not come to us...

But we really liked the second one... But I am worried if he is healthy...

The black on the end of the feathers could be stress baring or if it is a new baby it is still there first set of feathers.

As for the scalping on the beak that is a matter of ether grooming it off or somethings the birds will rub it themselves and fix the issue, most of mine will rubs there beak to smooth it off, some will not though and requires you to get it groomed smoothly.

Thank you!
What about the fact that he refused to go to us? He was bought in a store... He was seating on his owners hand but refused to go to me...

So strange. One parrot that's eating French fries and steak and looks great... And other eats a healthy diet and looks somewhat ill :(((

Which one to pick??? Oh my...

They both has orange around eyes, so I guess it means they both are older then 2 y.o, right?

He more then likely refused you... One because he was on his respectable owner. Two you are new and he needs some time to adjust to the new people. Really I'd pick number two if you really want to go with number two it sounds like he could be your better option of a parrot to work with and have a good diet background and so on. The other choice has a horrible diet and needs that to be fixed and may just be putting on a good front for now(being on the best behavior Infront of strangers).

It is a hard choice, but one you will have to make unless you plan for two new feathered friends;)
